Solar Eclipse Today (1 Viewer)

Did you know there's going to be an eclipse today? It's only a partial eclipse, not the more spectacular total eclipse, but it should be visible to most of the United States. Here in Columbus it will begin around 5:45 PM and last a little less than an hour. I'm going to make sure my kids get off their butts and go outside to see it.

Here's Phil Plait discussing it. There's also a link to a table showing what times major cties will be able to see it.

This is one of the variety that you shouldn't look at with the naked eye.
Why? I never understood this. I look at the sun all the time. Hurts your eyes for a minute then you're fine. Why is it that when half the sun is blocked, it can REALLY hurt you?

How I knew exactly who Phil Plait was I cannot figure out.

He's been on lots of science shows like "How the Universe Works". He also writes an astronomy blog for Slate. He first became popular with the Bad Astonomy website debunking the claims that the moon landing never happened.
