Anyone else about to hate their Thanksgiving? (1 Viewer)

So I was supposed to work tonight at the hospital at 7pm, but got someone to work for me so I could "enjoy" my thanksgiving. I figure ya know, drink some beers, watch some football, and eat something that hopefully my wife cooked. Maybe go over my brother's for some more beer and football.

Turns out since my wife thought I was working she made some plans, and now that I have off, I apparently have to attend these plans with her.

Going to her brother's girlfriend's mother's house like 75 miles away from where we live.

First of all, pretty much the only one I like in my wife's family is her dad, and he won't be there. Why? Well, he isn't going because my wife's mom will be there, and they are divorced, and he pretty much hates her.

So between driving 75 miles to and fro, meaning very little beer while there, while not even sure football will be on TV (will work on that one the second I get there), going to someone's house I have never met who is the mother of someone I don't even like, to hang out with my wife's other family members I don't like (one of which is her sister who has an eating disorder so I have to sit and hear her excuses at the table as to why she is only mixing the food around on her plate rather than taking any bites of it)................................I shoulda just ####### went to work.

The trials and tribulations of a male nurse, just enjoy the day off Fawker
spin-off. Meet the in-laws.

Enjoy what? I don't need much to be happy, but hanging out with people I dont like, driving a long way to do it, not being able to drink, probably not being able to watch football all that much, and maybe not even being able to enjoy dinner as much if hear the sister in law have to excuse herself to "use the bathroom", aka, puke.

Snow removal after a night of insomnia thinking about snow removal.

Other than that, should be an enjoyable day. Best to everyone on the boards and Happy Thanksgiving, folks. Enjoy.

Im sorry but Thanksgiving sucks. It's my least favorite holiday. Since we have the best house for entertaining we have to have everybody over. It's a nightmare. One i have to deal with sober since i no longer drink. I purposely forget a few things on the grocery run I get sent on so I can go back. Then I always run out of soda so I can make a third trip. I'll make each trip last until my wife texts asking if I'm still alive. "Yeah honey I'm 2 minutes from the house." That normally buys me 2 hours away.

There is nothing worse than being in a house that won't have football on for TG.
I'll just leave and risk divorce if this is the case.

Almost as bad as weddings that are dry (friend of mine actually went to a wedding once with no booze and since the bride/groom were vegetarians, no meat available in any dish).

That sounds better.

I don't have any legit excuses to leave this persons house.

Well played on your end.

Ours won't. We have a crowd coming over that will overflow the house, neighbors have the same situation and we're all sharing some rain-soaked parking.

It'll be a zoo.

I had a gf once who's parents were cool but not into sports. I had to endure this a few years and it was miserable. What kind of families sit around and eat dinner without the TV on? Even if your not watching it provides a nice background noise / ambiance.

At least now there are better options to follow games on smartphones

I'm in the parking lot of the golf course about to play in a turkey trot shotgun tournament. Might play a 2nd round after the the tournament.

Gobble gobble.

Let me guess, you live somewhere in the SW US. You married a Mexican wife who's family will come to the house and prepare everything, so the almighty Gringo can play a few rounds of golf before he comes and settles in to watch football. Close?

Pull your sack out of the chastity belt and tell the wife you aren't going. For the above reasons. She's free to go or stay. Pizza is being ordered in if you don't want to cook.

Take a day to enjoy yourself. Everyone else will get over it.

Golf..................................ugh, no gold in northeast ohio at the moment.
My favorite holiday of the year despite the weather in cleveland. Go to mom and dads, eat, drink a ton...have the wife drive me and the kids home.

Friday the family meets again at the bar and has a few at mid day instead of shopping. What could be better?

And just found out one or my best friends is coming up here for thanksgiving from tennessee. Maybe get to see him later. I will be pushing to leave shortly after dinner. Might fake a seizure or some ####.

Nothing

Last year my sister fried up a tukey and i hung there with her, my brother, and some other family watching football and drinkng xmas ale.

Just didnt work out that way this year. I never bothered to even look into it since as of yesterday i thought i was working

Some of you folks need to bone up on your communications. How would you not know what your wife was going to do before you took the day off? Secondly, I wouldn't go anywhere that doesn't have football on TV on thanksgiving. I certainly wouldn't drive an hour and a half, hoping to get a chance to watch the games. Places I go, even non-football fans watch the games on thanksgiving.

If that was me, no way i'd be going. Now I don't care about my marriage, but if I did, I'd just buy her something nice from Amazon to make her forget that I didn't come. Even better, I'd have a few nice things just stashed away in the house so I had a spur of the moment go to make up gift.

I didnt know because i didnt care. It was all last minute planning on her end also.

Just one of those things. I will enjoy not working 12 hours tonight once i get home later

oh crap - Northeast Ohio.. Cleveland?

at least there is no snow.. well not much of it anyway to deal with..

Just tell her you thought you would go to your brothers instead and you'll meet her after.... like back at your house

Yes, my FiL was admitted to the hospital yesterday with a collapsed lung and they found a large mass in the lung. Heading to the hospital now.

House full of screaming kids, adults who hate football and alcohol, a fricken mess to clean up afterwards, and back to work tomorrow. Who's lame ### idea was it to have Thanksgiving on a Thursday? Refuse to believe it was due to the Pilgrims love for Black Friday.

Gotta pin this one on George Washington.

Well I'll be celebrating from home today. No kids, no relatives just me and the wife. So i get to watch what i want and eat on my schedule. I also do the cooking so my wife just gets to sit around and eat. So she has a nice time as well.

Maybe that'll give the OP some perspective on giving thanks today.

T&P, jam.

Thanks all for the well wishes. I didn't want to bum out a good gripe thread but the title said exactly how I felt. Not a good day to be in a hospital. No one around. He's stable and feels fine, just have to wait until tomorrow for real news. MiL still making turkey, going over in a couple of hours. My wife brought home some work so it's keeping her busy.

FiL is 80 (next month) and has a pacemaker so that doesn't help.

Walk in. Look everyone in the eye silently. And then sing, "You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant."

And walk out.

I guess it could only be better if you were driving, watching tv and eating TG turkey, amirite?
