We recently adopted a 45# Pit Bull/Mountain Cur mix from a friend of a friend. My wife and I are divided on whether the dog should be allowed on the couch. So I am turning to the great wisdom of the FFA to decide this issue for us. What say Ye?

80lb Golden. We just recently got a very nice new couch so the answer is currently no. May change in a year.

we did on our old couches, and not on our new couch. they get up from time to time, but we trained them the command "floor" so they know to get off. Our pitbull hops right off like a good dog when we say the command, and my rottweiller looks at me when I say the command. I say it again and he grumpily gets off.

ETA: our dilmena now is that the couch is in front of the window, so when they hear something they hop on the couch to get a better look out the window. they listen when we tell them "off" or "floor" and they don't get up there too often. One key is getting a good alternative like Chainsaw has with the soft bed for his dog

We have a 25 lb dog that is allowed on the family room couch, only when invited up. He's not allowed on any other furniture, although once in awhile he will risk it and help himself to going on the living room couch.

150 lbs Great Dane and a 70 lbs Doberman. Both have a leather couch that is "theirs" in the living room. But we have a "nice" couch in the Hearth room that is off limits. The Dobie will sometimes test this limit.

If you don't allow your dog free reign of the furniture, you probably shouldn't even own a dog.

Hey man, congrats on the adoption. Be really careful about setting the boundaries like Vike Me said. Your pup should know exactly what it can and cannot do or else it will get confused. It won't understand, "We will let you up here today but not tomorrow." It is all or nothing. My little girl has been a couch hound all her life (11 years), but recently she got into the habit of scratching into the cushions before she curls up and lies down to sleep. It's cost me a couple hundred bucks getting them reupholstered and now she gets pissed when I pull out the couch cushions and prop them up before going to bed at night. She does have her own ottoman that is clearly defined as "hers" like Vike Me also mentioned. And I found a plush dog bed at KOHLS for like twenty bucks that I set on top of it that she is happy with. She likes soft beds.

We don't. She doesn't even attempt when we are home. When we leave she used to jump right on it immediately. Now we put a few empty soda cans with pennies in them on the couch and it keeps her off. Just put the pennies in and put a piece of tape over the opening.

No idea why. Our vet told us about it and it works perfectly.

My girlfriend has two 130lb danes that have absolutely destroyed her leather couch. She's getting a new one this weekend and the dogs won't be allowed on it

Our dogs ( beagle about 20# and a big old 60# plus Mutt) have the run of the house..

Heck... the Mutt thinks he is a lap dog during the winter months and lays on my lap as I'm watching T.V.

My Beagle Molly has free reign pretty much. She'll sit with us on the couch, sleep at the foot of the bed, etc.

We have grade school age kids though, so the furniture is pretty much well worn anyway. No sense in getting new stuff until they're gone from the house.

Yes and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love watching tv on teh couch with the pup right next to me sleeping.

I'd guess the no camp doesn't allow the dog on the bed as well.

Quoting for six-month update.
:lmao: 2 options, the dogs will not be on the couch or she'll be in the market for yet another couch!

school age kids here also so couch is, lets say, not pristine.

The big issue for me is the dog developing a sense of entitlement to the couch, not getting off when humans need to sit there. but I guess that is trainable

Yes, those boundries do need to be set. If we tell her to get down, she'll do it. Of course she'll jump right back up when the spot opens up again though. ;)

 never had the issue with any dogs we've owned.. The Beagle at times gets that "Beagle Attitude" but I just threaten to sit on him and he moves REAL fast .. ;)

Brother is visiting for Christmas with a 1 y.o. black lab mix. Am I wrong hoping he will wreck a couch so I have to get a new one?

Would I be wrong to guilt the brother into $$$ for the couch? :scared: ;)

Don't understand this. My dog ripped the back of two couches because she would climb up there while we were gone and look out the window waiting for us. While it was adorable, there was simply no reason to let her ruin furniture.

Three soda cans on the couch keep her off and her life is no worse.

we have 2, 30lb dogs. They have short hair and barely shed... plus all the furniture is pleather so it's no biggie. Don't know if I could handle a long hair/shedder period.
