snap, crackle, and more SNAPS! III -- this time it's 2014! (1 Viewer)

Kool-Aid Larry

Footballguy
this will be my largely self indulgent thread tracking idp snaps on a weekly basis

here's the 2013 version if you want a historical reference on anybody

I was getting my snap data from football outsiders (thx, FO!), but may start using the actual nfl gamebooks

the way it works is I'll list most of the guys in there for week 1, but then in following weeks will be noting mostly the deltas --- guys whose snaps changed significantly, guys who might be of particular interest in positional battles, or package participation, etc.

also, note that I play in very shallow DL leagues, so you won't see much DL in here unless requested, as I'm pretty ignorant on those guys, and they tend to rotate around a lot, and are vulnerable to nickel packages, so I have a harder time keeping up with who's supposed to be getting what snaps on a regular basis.

I generally include a few of the more name brand guys who might have some noteworthy development.

any commentary is most likely based entirely on snap data, and I welcome all corrections, observations, contributions, and discussion.

WEEK 1

I'll start off by noting a few of the outliers in both high and low team snap counts --- looks like mean and median were ~67 total snaps for week 1 last year.

mean for week 1 2014 being ~65 total snaps

CIN (@BAL) 85 (27 incompletions)

JAX (@PHI) 82

MIA (v NEP) 80 (27 incompletions)

if you throw much past 20 incompletions in a game I feel those extra become kind of 'hollow' snaps, as they don't lead to as much idp production

CAR (@TB) 55

DAL (v SFO) 54

NYJ (v OAK) 49 -- that's pretty dismal, lowest through 4 weeks last year was 52

  • The package used Jason Hatcher as its single defensive lineman. He lined up at RE, LE, and NT on different occasions.
  • The 'Psycho' package utilizes Trent Murphy as a roaming ILB. He dropped in coverage 3 times and blitzed from the MLB, LILB, and RILB spots on the other 4 occasions.
  • E.J. Biggers is the 5th DB utilized in this package. Exclusively played in the slot.

This is superb.

Couple of interesting IDP notes:

Gilberry is clearly the number 2 DL in CIN, dispelling the idea that Hunt would eat into his snaps significantly.

It was Robert Blanton, not Harrison Smith who was the MIN safety to play all snaps. Now Smith got the big play, but Blanton got 7 tackles. Behind that suspect LB core, there could be alot of tackle value for those safeties.

Best IDP feature on the web...thanks again.

Spikes is obviously not being trusted with pass coverage full time, which was my worry. 70% isn't enough for me.

Stay Away from the Jags' "Lightning" Package

It's important to manage the down and distance in every game, but Redskins head coach Jay Gruden will be particularly mindful of that need in Week 2. He'll know that any time his offense is caught in obvious pass mode, the Jags are unlikely to unleash a dangerous sub-package.

It's known as "lightning" and features at least three "Leo-style" pass-rushers. Leo is the name the Jags give to the hybrid rushers on their defensive front, the players who align either as defensive ends or linebackers.

Technically, the lightning package features four Leos, as ESPN.com Jaguars reporter Michael DiRocco noted during preseason:

The Jaguars debuted their lightning package during 11-on-11 scout-team work when the offense was running some of
http://bleacherreport.com/tampa-bay-buccaneersTampa Bay
http://bleacherreport.com/tampa-bay-buccaneers’s offense. It’s a lineup that features four Leos on the field at the same time: Chris Clemons, Andre Branch, Ryan Davis and rookie Chris Smith. The 260-pound Davis lines up inside as a defensive tackle.
Even though the Jags used three Leos against the Eagles, this package still created havoc. It was the chief reason Jacksonville logged five sacks against a normally solid offensive line. Let's take a closer look at the scheme in action.

*After review, a sack originally credited to Jaguars defensive end

Ryan Davis with 1:38 remaining in the second quarter Sunday has been credited to defensive end Andre Branch. Branch also has been credited with a forced fumble on the play. That means Branch now has two forced fumbles on the season, and Branch also has two sacks with Davis having one. …
*Middle linebacker Paul Posluszny practiced Wednesday after sustaining a knee contusion that kept him out several plays Sunday. He was not listed on the injury report.

The Cincinnati Bengals signed defensive tackle and 2012 second-round pick Devon Still to their practice squad so that his daughter, who has been diagnosed with stage-4 pediatric cancer, can continue to receive health insurance.

Still was cut from the team's active roster over the weekend, but immediately placed on the practice squad so he could continue to receive full health benefits and not have to travel with the team as much as an active player would,

Bucs MLB Mason Foster dislocated his shoulder in the Week 2 loss to the Rams.
Foster exited early in the first half. Across 97 snaps, Foster has registered just six tackles and is struggling against both the run and pass. Former Patriots LB Dane Fletcher will man the middle for however long Foster is out.

Bucs DT Gerald McCoy exited Sunday's Week 2 game against the Rams with a broken hand and will not return.
McCoy exited early in the first quarter, The Bucs have been ravaged by injuries up front; they lost LE Adrian Clayborn to a torn biceps this week and RE Michael Johnson is also out for Week 2.

I'm surprised to see Bruce Carter at 100%, he barely managed one tackle. More promising usage for McClain however

Jenkins at 69% (Trusnik 78%, Ellerbe 20%)

Bennett 79%

Daniels 66%

Mack 77%

Von 76%

I had doubts that A. Barr was no more than just a pass rusher, even though he has All-pro OLB measurables. He's been playing really well under Mike Zimmer.

Jeff Ratcliffe @JeffRatcliffe · Sep 19

Joplo Bartu started and played 19 snaps. Prince Shembo played 28 snaps. #Falcons
Dane Fletcher got the start and played every-down with Mason Foster sidelined for the #Bucs.
Re: Bartu and Shembo

I think that was a case where they got the rookie in the game for more snaps because it was a rout. I'll be interested to see how this battle develops in the coming weeks. like i said in the other bartu-shembo discussion, i think shembo sticks in ILB only *IF* they can't manufacture a credible pass rush from Biermann/Massaquoi. So far through 3 games? 1 combined sack from them.

I expected to check on the Arizona snap counts to see Honey badger putting up like 50-75% of the snaps for the week....but

Mathieu had 6 tackles in only 15 snaps!

Cardinals’ defensive snap count:
DL: Calais Campbell 62, Kareem Martin 38, Frostee Rucker 27, Tommy Kelly 27, Dan Williams 26, Ed Stinson 3.
LB: Larry Foote 64, Matt Shaughnessy 43, Sam Acho 26, Kevin Minter 19, Thomas Keiser 14.
DB: Rashad Johnson 64, Patrick Peterson 63, Jerraud Powers 53, Tony Jefferson 52, Deone Bucannon 43, Antonio Cromartie 41, Justin Bethel 24, Tyrann Mathieu 15.

I had started to dig a little deeper on Jefferson, who continues to play lights out and remains on the waiver wire. But it looks like almost all of Mathieu's snaps were coming from TJ. With their "linebackers", they obviously are going to continue to play a lot of 3 safety looks. But Johnson appears in no danger of losing time based on his usage, and as long as they want to continue to develop Bucannon, it will likely come at some expense to TJ.

Larry Foote, LB: -5.5

Breakdown: After a solid start to the season, Foote hit a brick wall in this one, struggling in every facet of defense despite picking up three stops. Notched a single hurry in 13 pass rushes, while allowing every pass into his coverage to be completed, though the largest portion of his negative grade can be attributed to three missed tackles (2Q, 10:21, 3Q 3:37 and 1:47).

Scandrick didn't start, he did take Morris Claiborne's for several snaps.

Morris Claiborne made a game-sealing interception late in Sunday’s game, but that might not be enough to keep him from being benched.

Claiborne was exposed for most of the game, with the St. Louis Rams continually throwing the ball his direction with success. He gave up a 51-yard touchdown pass to Brian Quick, a 38-yard completion to Kenny Britt, and another 4-yard touchdown pass to Austin Pettis.

Asked if the team would consider benching Claiborne, coach Jason Garrett said: “We’ll determine how we’re going to play guys as the week goes on.”

The high snap count may also have taken its toll on DT Henry Melton, who suffered a groin injury but stayed on the field anyway. The concern is that Melton already missed time in camp with a groin injury,

edit: The Cowboys have replaced Morris Claiborne with Orlando Scandrick as the starting corner opposite Brandon Carr.
After learning of his demotion, Claiborne "stormed out of the facility" and skipped the Cowboys' walkthrough practice on Tuesday.

The Giants just may have a new starting strong safety. Stevie Brown, once a big-play interception machine, just may be in Tom Coughlin's doghouse.
Brown, a fifth-year safety, found himself on the bench in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 30-17 win over the Houston Texans, replaced by rookie fifth-round pick Nat Berhe. On Monday, Coughlin provided scant details about why Brown was out of the game, although he did say that the 2012 Pro Bowl alternate was not injured.

Brown was pulled after he was beaten on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Damaris Johnson. He exchanged words with coordinator Perry Fewell after the play.

You will recall he was victimized by the Detroit Lions in Week 1 for a 67-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Johnson, running himself out of position and slamming into Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

Don't think Trusnik lasts when Misi comes back (he is now practicing). Jenkins has been stellar at WLB and the Dolphins special teams are really suffering without Trusnik.

Even with 100% snaps last week, I don't think he is worth holding.

The early word on Moore - according to Vaughn McClure - is that he could be out for the season

Kemal Ishmael replaced Moore, eventually going down with what was probably heat cramps. He did return to the game, which is always a good sign. Apparently a trainer asked him whether he could bend his right knee before he returned, so that's something to keep an eye on.

If Moore is out for any amount of time, Kemal Ishmael will have to develop quickly. Ishmael got a head start when defensive coordinator Mike Nolan started using more of a three-safety look featuring Moore, Ishmael, and free safety Dwight Lowery. That could become a threesome of Lowery, Southward, and Ishmael.

Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs and cornerback Jimmy Smith are both active. Suggs returned to practice Friday after suffering a groin injury against the Browns.

Smith participated fully Thursday and Friday despite knee and ankle injuries.

The Ravens have three cornerbacks active: Jimmy Smith, Asa Jackson and Chykie Brown. Strong safety Matt Elam has played nickelback in passing situations, and Jeromy Miles takes Elam's spot at strong safety. [editor's note: terrance brooks?]

Pernell McPhee might not get the headlines that Terrell Suggs or Elvis Dumervil do, but he’s such a weapon for defensive coordinator Dean Pees. When lining up at linebacker, he’s been on both sides of the defense for roughly the same amount of snaps. He’s also lined up at defensive end and at nose guard recently, and is becoming a wild card in what’s kind of a static defense that the Ravens run. They can create pressure with McPhee in all situations, and line him up anywhere. - See more at:

He’s listed as probable even though he sat out of Wednesday’s practice with a sprained ankle. I noticed Suggs on the sidelines in street clothes in the 2nd half. I don't know when he left the game for good, but any idea what his snap % was up to that point. Any word on if he'll continue to miss time, or if they just took him out because the game was pretty much decided?

yeah, I have suggs on there, and apparently he's got some groin issue, so maybe he aggravated it, or they were just trying to make sure he didn't.

think j johnson settled into about t same usage as the previous week so he didn't get listed.

edit: and I edited in monday night

Terrell Suggs on his groin injury: 'I'm going to be all right. It was nothing big. We were up so we just pulled it, so we're good.'

Terrell Suggs is on the sideline in street clothes. Told it's a combo: his groin acted up a little and the blowout made it easy to end day

i read something following the game about this. Suggs - of course - said that he could have gone back into the game but it wasn't necessary.

This is my first post, so I hope I'm posting this correctly. I was just wondering if anyone out there knows why Antoine Cason's numbers have dipped so low in weeks 3 and especially 4 after scoring so high in weeks 1 and 2. Also, would Tyrann Mathieu be a better start this week. What about Bradley Fletcher, who has put up a lot of points recently instead?
