ARI DB Questions (1 Viewer)

So going into the year we had Tony Jefferson at SS, with Deon Bucannon the SS in waiting. Over at FS you have Rashad Johnson that held a spot for Tyrann Mathieu. All of them are decent enough players.

But - what is reality? Are we looking at Jefferson/Mathieu getting the bulk of plays going forward - or will there continue to be a lot of PT split between the 4 of them. Al have value - but each players value seems to fluctuate week to week. Jefferson is the only one that seems consistent, but is he racking up tackles because eof some other flaw in his game that will lead to Bucannon taking over?

I really like the Ari DBs from a fantasy perspective but am hoping for some insight from a Cardinals fan.

Well, Jefferson is currently PFF #1 ranked SS against the run; so he is clearly doing something right. I didn't expect him to hold off Buchanon even this long, but he can't be taken out of the lineup.

Thankfully for us, and less so for the Cards, their LBs are garbage. Bucnanon has actually been lining up at LB occasionally.

Onto Johnson, who I've checked every week on snap counts -- continues to play 100% of the snaps. It appeared many of Mathieu's snaps he got were taken from Jefferson last week.

What I expect? I expect, based on the lack of LBs they have, all four of these guys playing pretty extensively. Mathieu has the ability to play slot corner, and they are already playing Buchanon at LB-type positioning. I would expect the formation to see a lot dime looks, with Buchanon as the 2nd "LB".

I want in.

Foote is playing 100% of the snaps at LB, the next closest is Shaugnessy at 67%, who is a DE for all intents and purposes.

This AZ defensive coordinator is putting his best 11 on the field, and not making them think too much. He's playing 4 safeties, a LOT. My pick for highest scoring DB forward is Rashad Johnson, but really, close you eyes and throw a dart. They are all playing all over the field, it's too early to call who is going to be the best pick. But now is the time to grab them. You can't wait to see. All four should be rostered, and man, all four might be startable in big play leagues.

From ESPN blogger:

SAFETIES

Rashad Johnson: 64 of 64

Tony Jefferson: 52 of 64

Deone Bucannon: 43 of 64

Tyrann Mathieu: 15 of 64

Recap: As Mathieu continues his comeback, he’s starting to chip away at Jefferson’s snaps with a season-high 15. Even though it has been only three games, Bucannon has established his role this season as the Cardinals’ dime linebacker. His size and athleticism allow him to play that linebacker role while being able to drop back into coverage.

Once again, safety Rashad Johnson and linebacker Larry Foote played every snap -- 64 in total.

DB: Rashad Johnson 64, Patrick Peterson 63, Jerraud Powers 53, Tony Jefferson 52,Deone Bucannon 43, Antonio Cromartie 41, Justin Bethel 24, Tyrann Mathieu 15

Peterson's only snap off the field was in big package -- five linemen, four linebackers and two DBs. The two jumbo DBs are Bucannon and Johnson. Mathieu got more plays and picked up six tackles in 15 snaps. He replaced Tony Jefferson on most of his snaps. While Bucannon played 43 snaps, all but one were played at the "dollar" linebacker spot.

  • Tyrann Mathieu got 15 snaps, as noted. In Week 2, he came in as a seventh DB. That happened a couple of times against the Niners, but it was not the only role he played. On Sunday, he subbed in for safety Tony Jefferson. The reason this is interesting is because it was Rashad Johnson that lost snaps to Mathieu a season ago. Mathieu has yet to see any playing time at nickel corner. That has been all Jerraud Powers so far.

Good info so far. This was briefly discussed in the larger "snaps" thread. There are basically two primary ways of thinking about it that I've come up with...

1- What we see is what we get. Mathieu is taking snaps away from Jefferson, and the healthier he gets, the more he will take away from the same player.

2- Jefferson is significantly outplaying Johnson, and they will try to get the best players on the field. As Mathieu gets healthier, he will return to playing more nickle corner and return to taking snaps away from Johnson.

Fact that Honey Badger threw up that stat line in that little snaps is amazing. Probably a bit of luck in the play calling from the other team but still...

Buccanon looked gimpy late - but Mathieu doesn't fill the same role if he misses any time. Still like th eproduction from the unit as a whole.
