I am heading into SF for a 3 day vacation with my GF Oct 11-13. We are staying at the W hotel on 3rd street.

We get into SF before noon and I have rented a Convertible Camaro SS for the 3 days.

On Sunday morning we are headed to Pittsburg to go sturgeon fishing till around 3pm.

We leave Monday night at 7pm.

I am thinking that we will spend Saturday in SF and was wondering what the best oyster bar would be for lunch and the best Italian restaurant for dinner.

Is there anything between SF and Pittsburg that we should check out after we are done fishing?

Was hoping for a nice seafood restaurant for Sunday night.

Monday I was thinking that we would check out of the hotel and head down towards Monteray for the afternoon.

Thought?

I would start by dropping the whole go to SF for short stay and spending a day in Pittsburg. I would follow that up by not spending another day driving down and back from Monterey. Stick with the city, Muir Woods, Sausalito if only there for three days. There is way more than enough to do. If you must drive, drive north to west Marin/Russian River, not south.

Well the reason for the trip is that I am meeting a business associate for the fishing trip. The rest of the trip is open to do whatever we want.

I am leaning towards staying in SF for most of the time as we are only there for a short time. We have a fun car to drive for the trip so was thinking that a couple hour drive would be fun. I'll look into Muir Woods as well as the Russian River option.

I'll try to bump my San Fran thread since I just got back.

I loved the route 1 drive but never made monterey was too far for a short day.

Gotcha. The drive up the PCH to the Russian River is pretty nice and not nearly as time-consuming as Monterey. Autumn in SF is the best time of year to be there. That's their good weather season, with a lot of really great festivals.

I talked to the gf and we are just going to stay in town with the exception of sturgeon fishing. Looking at going to the ferry building on Saturday and then heading to pier 23 for some drinks. Finish the night at the North Shore for Italian dinner. Any recommendations for the best Italian restaurant?

After fishing on Sunday we will be going out for a nice dinner as well. Any seafood restaurants that we should make sure to go to?

Monday we plan on doing some touristy stuff, Coit tour, trolleys, gg park, etc and then head back to the airport.

So I'm now looking for best Italian restaurant, best seafood restaurant, and a great Oyster bar. Thanks!

Warerbar on Embarcadaro. Happy hour oysters from 1130-1730. Right along the water with a view of the Bay Bridge with outdoor seating. Bring a jacket, enjoy oysters and a drink. It's a seafood restaurant too ($$$), but I've only gone for happy hour.

Hog Island Oyster Co. in the Ferry Building is really good too, but they don't have happy hour. The seafood and grilled cheese is really good.

My favorite restaurants are: Brenda's soul food for brunch...they have awesome crawfish bengiets (never been NO) and NOPA is American style food (pork chops, meat) open for dinner until 1 AM. Both those places get packed so be prepared to wait, for NOPA make reservations now. If you want to take her to an expensiveish, panty dropper dinner get Moroccan food at Aziza. Great food, but an even better ambience...low lighting, comfy couches/bench, nice design.

Other places I take people are... the chicken wings at San Tung and garlic noodles and Asian style crab at Thanh Long. Tadich Grill is an SF throwback for cioppino. If you want to try a famous Mission burrito, El Farilito is where to go.

I'm also take people to Humphrys Slocombe for ice cream (they have the original location in the Mission and a one the Ferry Building with smaller selection of flavors). Get Secret breakfast (bourbon and corn flakes) and any other crazy combo flavors they have...it's ALL good. Mitchell's is really good too with a more classic ice cream in exotic flavors like ube, Jack fruit, etc to go along with classics. Super creamy. Bi-rite gets hyped, but I prefer these two.

There's so many good places to eat. Those are just some of my favorites exploring SF as someone who lives in the East Bay. Download Yelp and just use that. The yelp community here is huge.

Not sure what age range you are but Treasure Island music festival is that weekend. Saturday headliners are Outkast and Zedd. Though that's a more generic experience.

If there is any way you can bump it up a weekend, I'd do it. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is in Golden Gate Park that weekend and might be the best music festival in the world. Certainly the best free one.

An associate said that he'd fly me any my girl down to SF for some sturgeon fishing. I can't really ditch that since he is paying for most of the trip.

It looks like that weekend will have the blue angels and fireworks as well so it should be a good time.

Definitely going to hit up the water bar as well as the Ferry building. Should be oystered out by then!

I'll look into the Aziza restaurant as well. She loves good Italian food so I need to figure out where to go for that. Thinking either Fior d’ Italia or Trattoria Pinocchio

Monday morning we are going to go to Muir Woods. Are there any good places over there that we should go to for lunch?

Thanks for this! I am 39 she is 32. It looks like we will be there for Fleet Week. Where would be a good spot to watch the fireworks and air show?

I've never purposely been there for Fleet Week so it's always just been a pleasant surprise for me. Though you can see them anywhere along Embarcadaro. So I assume Fisherman's Warf, Aquatic Park, and Fort Mason. They practice Thursday and Friday so you can catch them before the weekend crowds if you get here on those days. I assume watching it from Sausilito would be cool too, but I'm pretty sure that gets packed as well.

Saturday afternoon:

Go to Marina Sub, but some sandwiches.

Walk down toward Marina, stop by one of several liquor stores, buy beer.

Go to Crissy Field and watch the show. Starts at 1:00, Blue Angels go on at 3:00.

Walk back up toward Pacific Heights and stop by Mauna Loa for a late afternoon beer or go to the Final Final to catch last bits of college football.

Go to Jackson Fillmore for dinner (Italian).

That, in a nutshell, was my 20s.

ETA: Don't drive. If you do, go early and park in the Marina.

Thanks! I'm starting to regret reserving the Camaro SS for the weekend. We will still need it to get to Pittsburg I guess.
since you have the car I recommend taking a couple hours to drive route 1 down to pigeon point lighthouse. Stop randomly along the way. You get great views the lighthouse is closed now but at that time you may see some sea animals.it's not far and is scenic. I only say that since you have the car. If you are from out that way the views might not be as nice to someone from nj :)

Oh, and when looking for a dinner spot in SF, don't be fooled by the fact that North Beach is the old Italian neighborhood. Not many good Italian restaurants there, IMO.

"best" is very subjective. What type of ambience are you looking for? for your italian, do you need to be in North Beach?

North beach italian:

- rose pistola

- perbacco

- fior d'italia

- firenze by night

Near the marina is one of my favorites: pan e vino

Seafood:

- farallon

- michael mina

- taddich grill (more casual, but old school SF)

- sam's

for oysters, the majors are: swan, hog, and anchor....many places do they well though.

I also like pier 23 to hang out...glad you are going.

for a day trip, i think hugging th coast north towards and through Marshall would be well received. nicks and tony's are some of my favorite spots to eat on that drive.

Taqueria San Jose in Oakland is about the best taqueria I have ever eaten at, and I have been to a ton.

Tadich Grill is a great call.

:o Just don't take any showers, flush the toilet, or drink more than a cup of water a day, ok?? Bring warm clothes. It can be very warm in Oct in any part of N. CA and cold the next day. Very yo yo month. I don't think you need to worry about any rain gear though... <_<

Last week we were all excited about rain being in the forecast. All that I saw was 5 minutes of spitting and that was it. The definition of rain here out of desperation is any amount of water that manages to just graze the surface of the ground. <_<

We went for fleet week and it was AWESOME. Perfect weather. It was a great show. We saw some of it from our Alcatraz trip, and then just hung out on the Embarcadero to see the rest.
