Giving up watching sports (1 Viewer)

I'm at a loss but I'm also finding less reasons to keep up with pro sports any longer. It's gotten t to the point where I would actually base my emotional state on how my team was doing. Eventually, I had an epiphany this past weekend watching the Patriots: this #### doesn't matter. Not historically, not culturally, and certainly not personally. I haven't watched ESPN in my home in nearly a year.

I'm almost there. I cut the cable a few years ago and the antenna isn't reliable. I picked up NFL Now this year to see highlights, and that's been cool, but it's only about an hour per week to see all the highlights. I got cable for the World Cup, then dumped it as soon as it finished. I can't say that I regret it, which surprises me. Life's busy - 3 kids in the soccer/violin practice zone, plus two nights of my own soccer per week, plus work travel... there really isn't much room for sports right now. I'll probably come back in 10 years.

I don't know many people that like sports as much as me. I've been a sports nerd since I was six years old, stuffing countless journals with every season from the USFL to Division 1-AA football. I could never give it up, but I am weaning myself off certain things. No NBA anymore, very little college basketball, and I don't follow much tennis anymore. Could never give up baseball or college football, I suppose I could give up the others but doubt I ever will.

I think I just got to the point a few years ago where I don't think people are completely strange if they have no interest in sports. I need more time...

See you tomorrow.

I'm there to an extent. I watch but not with as much interest. I don't make it a point to not miss games (even steelers) and I just don't care much anymore. Too busy and really, what's the point? How does a team of millionaires impact my life? The money and over exposure has really pushed me away from the nfl. This is year 20 of fantasy football for me and it may be my last.

NBA Playoffs- Best thing in sports.

Boxing

Rivals going at it in Grand Slam Tennis

Sunday golf in the majors

Only events I get up for as a fan.

I stopped watching football hardcore about 5 years ago. I would see a game now and again or part of one, but still enjoyed keeping up with the nfl with a smaller focus on my team in the news but more from a casual perspective. I cut the cord a while ago and just found nfl red zone channel online since I now live in a area that doesn't have the nfl over the air. I realized this year that it's their presentation with a commercial every four plays and the annoying commentators that talk over the game action that ruined it for me. The redzone channel even when nobody is past the 50 yard line is amazing. No commercials and a minimal commentator has restored my faith in the nfl product, now only if they sold it ala cart, until then to bad for them.

I've started weening myself off sports over the years and not intentionally...it's just sorta happened.

I didn't watch a single baseball game all year...not even an inning of the World Series. Baseball could end tomorrow and it wouldn't phase me now.

I stopped watching hockey altogether.

I watch very little NBA anymore...it just feels too manipulated now. I will watch some regular season and playoffs and definitely the championship though...can't seem to completely pull away.

I'll watch whatever NFL is on...Sunday, Monday and Thursday. But I do find myself disinterested a lot if Dolphins aren't on.

I watch very few NCAA Football games but can't wait for tournament.

I watch quite a bit of NCAA basketball. Every Duke game and a lot of ACC and the big games throughout. I'll never cut that cord.

I watch no golf.

I do like boxing still...and find myself watching it when I can.

I catch UFC very sparingly...will never pay for it.

I'll watch tennis but usually only men's bracket...don't care for the dude who usually rules the women's side so I steer clear.

I never watch Nascar anymore...and I was born in a city where it pretty much originated.

But in my younger days...I watched all of the above and more. Hell, I'd watch fishing and diving and skiing even though I had absolutely no desire to do any of that. If it was on Wide World of Sports...I watched it. Was a great fan of Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos but don't care for it now.

I watch baseball and hockey only for the Mets and Rangers. Once they are out of it, I'm done with the sport for the season. With football, I gave up on fantasy and cancelled Sunday Ticket a couple of years ago and don't miss it. I watch as many Dolphins games as I get and listen to some on Sirius. Sometimes I'll record replays on NFL network and check out highlights. I still get up for the playoffs and Super Bowl no matter who is in it though. No kids, so it's not a time constraint issue.

The sad part is I actually got that reference.

I don't base my time around sports, but going to a wing joint with friends, or even sitting in my living room with my son and watching football or baseball games are still some of my favorite times.

What else you going to do during the winter? I know its still fall, but it might as be winter. And you don't even have kids.

Op...do you have kids?
Negative. I live with my girlfriend and her cats.
I only asked to see if you were virile.

but also because once my kids showed up, I stopped having time and then interest to follow sports the same way I did prior to them. I still watch my favorites- mostly on DVR- but I'd rather spend time with my family tbh.

I gave up FF about 5 years ago. I don't know if I could name 5 NFL starting RBs now.

I will never give up college football and March Madness though. :excited:

I gave up the NFL about 4-5 years ago; it was too boring for me and I wasn't as interested as I used to be. Cut back some on college football. I focus my energies on the Indians and to some extent on the Penguins. This time of year is great because I can read a lot more since there's not a game every night.

In fact, I've read 25 books so far this year.

About 3 years ago for me. Don't miss it one bit. It had felt more like a dreary obligation than recreation by the end.

I've moved far more focus to the English Premier League (soccer), which is far more entertaining. Two games per week most weeks for my team, and the games only last 2 hours with no commercials interrupting game action. The NFL is just a mess.

In the past 5 years, I've pretty much weened myself off of watching sports, to an extent. I'll still watch bits and pieces, but rarely do I ever watch a complete game. I'll still follow my teams, but they are more of a background activity. Even with all of that, I still wouldn't say I've given up sports, though.

I have a hard time sitting thru just one game with all the stoppages.

RedZone or at least 2-3 games to flip between works ok for me.

The only problem with RedZone for me is that I don't give a damn about most of the teams. It's cool that there's always action, but I'm not that interested in random football games.

Yes, you need to gamble or be in an FF league to make most of that crap worth watching.

I guess this is me, too. I wonder if something chemical happens to you when you get older? At first I thought my problem with football was all the play stoppages but, like Sheik said, RedZone didn't cut it either because it turned out I wasn't interested in any of them no matter how fast and uninterrupted the action was. EPL (and its fans here) just makes me laugh and laugh.

Maybe I stopped watching football because everybody watches football. I'm a little bored if I'm not at odds with most people.

It's kind of odd that a Patriots fan would be saying this right now with how they're playing. You're right that it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but it seems like the better solution would be to not get so emotionally invested in how the team is playing.

As an Atlanta sports fan, I'm unfortunately all too familiar with this perspective :kicksrock:

At least in 4 years for the next World Cup... maybe for the next Summer Olympics, depending on travel that summer.
