Are you any good at Fantasy Football? (1 Viewer)

Most, if not all, of us migrated here at some point from the mid to late 90's through today, initially in our search for information on Fantasy Football.

A lot of FFA regulars don't even play FF anymore, or just go through the motions. I'm sure a good chunk of FFA types still play FF and take it seriously, even if they might not buy every magazine or join every website any longer.

so the question, just out of curiosity more than anything, assuming you've played FF at least 10 years, are you any good at it? have you won championships? What bit of wisdoms have you learned about managing teams, evaluating players/matchups etc and how much do you pay attention to "experts" now vs in the past.

I'm pretty miserable at it now. Usually start lousy because I do no prep, go on a hot streak mid-season after getting some wire guys and just miss the playoffs or lose first round. Rinse and repeat. Do it to keep in touch mostly these days.

80 teams 71 in masters ff. 64% winning percentage. 2 team out of it, 9 teams with 1st round bye at this time. All 100+ leagues. FFPC. 4 teams 3 made playoffs. 3 yahoo all in good shape. Then a few personal leagues. I don't share advice.

FF used to be all-consuming. now, not so much. mostly a way to stay in touch w/ friends and try and win a couple of bucks. haven't won a "championship" in about 15 years.

still, 1st NFL Sunday of the year is like Xmas morning.

My 4 $$$ teams (aggregate $1,200 buy in) are 34-10 through 11 weeks. In two of these 4 leagues (12 teamers), I am poised to win the points title for the 4th straight year. In the other two, I've finished anywhere from 1st-3rd and am 1st in one and third in the other as of right now.

[brooklyn accent] So, yeah. I'm pretty f#$%ing good. [/brooklyn accent]

[whisper]Full disclosure : Regrettably, I only have 2 championships out of a possible 16 (made playoffs in all 4 leagues the last 4 years running) so this domination hasn't turned into money. I'm the Atlanta Braves of FF.[/whisper]

In the 15 or so years I did fantasy football, I learned the best approach (for me) is to put no time at all into it, don't waste time with the NFL draft or any preseason games or previews. Buy the FBG service one day before your draft and follow it completely, unless you don't want to. Don't stress anything. League controversies are the most fun part of fantasy football, so always go all-in when one crops up in your league. Using this approach, I won a few times and had some fun.

It is so much luck. I don't even play anymore it got so boring.

With that said, for most leagues unless Hardcore you could use this website and dominate, unless of course your players get hurt, arrested, murdered, or something no one can predict.

I bet you're fun at parties.
What's a party? During this time of year I just spend the time I usually do in the FFA on FF. Having a great job where I work at desk doesn't hurt.

I won a couple of championships along the way but lost way more seasons than that. I would often get compliments on how good my team was after the draft and then watch injuries and other things just kill me. I retired several years ago and I don't miss it even a little bit.

Awesome!

I've gone the opposite route as other affairs have bumped priorities around. One league left--the one that got me into the game years ago. Tough league to win and last year was my best finish at 2nd. This year is the first I think I won't have at least made playoffs for some really bad beats but I expect to still be playing in the bonus NFL Playoff pool after the regular season's done.

eta--I'm working entirely off the numbers and FBG comments--haven't seen a game in a couple years, just keeping up with friends.

The main problem with fantasy football is the small sample size.... unless you have a bazillion teams or play the daily leagues or something... if you're just the guy with 1-3 teams then a 13 week regular season with some playoffs is pretty much putting yourself at the mercy of luck... a lot.

Now, there is no question that if you spend time at least reading about fantasy football and paying attention to it that you can do better... although I wouldn't call it skill as much as "effort".

The problem is that the effort has varying degrees of payoff for you... I had a team that FBG's ranked as a 99% chance to make the playoffs.. i crushed the draft... but I've drafted every single guy that got suspended, injured, or is having a huge off year (eff you AJ Green).

Last year when I crushed the draft AND was having a great season, it was enjoyable... this year, not so much.

I only continue to play FFL and will continue to play in the future to have an excuse to hang out with my friends on draft day and stay connected to them.

I still run my 2 leagues, but I'm definitely not as into it as I was.... frankly I'm averaging about 1-2 hours of viewed NFL football a week vs. 6-8 in days past.

I guess it's a symptom of getting older and having your priorities shift.... I thought FFL was the best thing ever between 15 y.o. and 30

I don;t even care anymore. My work league is competitive but I don't really give a #### if I win or lose. $250 buy-in.

This year I am currently 4-7 in a 14 team league with the following lineup:

Wilson

Lacy

Bradshaw, Jackson, Forsett, Gray

Cobb

S. Smith

K. Allen

M. Evans

Gronk

Ridiculous.

2,500, 750, 250?

should be 2-9.

I've won a lot over the years. I used to be able to gain an advantage by researching during the month of August. The past couple years I've printed out a list the morning of the draft. My experience and strategy during the draft still give me a slight edge, but it's all luck.

If the leagues I play in folded, I wouldn't care. I'd just stick to fan duel.

I love this part
This is what I can say. I only use FF sites for news, never rankings. I use the Shark Pool info more than anything else on line.

This year I was ahead on Bradshaw took him with last pick in 80% of my drafts. Took Sanders in the 8th round in early drafts in 50% of the leagues and moved up on him when he was getting sniped. When everyone was taking L. Green, I waited two rounds and got Gates, usually to back up Bennett who I got late. Took Fred Jackson everywhere and it was good until the injury too. Took Luck in the 5th round a lot. Picked up the rookie WR where I could but never over paid. NE D and K everywhere and Vintairi when I could not get Gost. I busted on Garson and Bush a lot in the 3rd and 4th a lot. Busted on P. Thomas a lot too. The biggest thing besides drafting well and putting in the time to do waivers, that is the biggest commitment once the season starts. Finally, I try to get two stud/reliable receivers with my first two picks. If I can't get two WR any big point getting person will do such as Rodgers or Manning. CJ hurt me this year but I got Forte by default a lot. Early RB's are usually a bust.

Good luck in the playoffs.

I've won 5 championships in 20 years, I only play one league. I'm in a good position for championship #6 this year. Don't put much effort into it at all now compared to first 10 years. The only time I really gear down is prior to the draft.

From my perspective you need to put some time into the draft, you need to hit the waiver wire aggressive and early, especially to drop duds from the draft and fill slots at WR, TE and Def/Special teams. I rarely make trades, prefer to use the waiver wire. Beyond that you have to make the best possible coaching decisions from wk to wk, which is imo the hardest part of the running a good team. For that I just use my gut and live with the results.

Good luck in the playoffs.
It is loss but I picked up CJ and others a lot.

I have also have two championships in a dynasty league that is IDP and Bramel and Norton are in. I got kicked out after telling John to go F himself over a waiver move for Troy P but that on me. In the league 6 years I think.

I've won championships in a few leagues with no dues, but those don't count. My main league is on year 11 and I've lost in the championship twice, never won. Sitting in first right now in the two leagues with $$ on the line. Little in season management, just drafted well.

I used to be in a league with guys who brought laptops with Excel spreadsheets and several magazines to the draft. I, on the other hand, would show up with a pencil, and that was if I remembered that much. I'd have the sheets that they printed out as my only reference. One year I said "I'll take Colt McCoy." And everyone looked at me weird. I said, "The running back?" They all laughed and said, "You mean LeSean McCoy? "

I won the whole thing that year.

I used to use the USA Today to do the stats as an commish in the early days.

Pretty good overall, though not the time nor desire to study anything at this point. But I love watching football and FF gives me a reasom to care about Browns vs. Jax in mid October.

In my big league (12 years I think) Ive won 3 and probably the same number of best points and am likely up a few grand overall (200 to now 275 buy-in).

In 8 leagues. Presently first in 6 of them. Will make playoffs in all.

I come here often for the FFA and don't talk much in the Shark Pool, but I use all the FBG member tools a ton.

FWIW, I have had the highest point total without making the playoffs... no wild card because guys were idiots

Still no wild card when two years later I won it all with a 5-8 regular season record. We finally put in WCs after that.

I am not good at FF any longer. I don't do prep work and only watch 30 minutes of the NFL each week at most. I have played in the same friend league for 12 years.

I used to live for FF and won the league once and finished second twice. The winning came over a 5 year period that ended about 5 years ago.

I just play FF now to stay connected to long time friends. I don't care about the winning or losing. I laugh at the guys that are crazy devoted. Seems like a waste of time.

12 inch schtick.

Terrible year for me and Im not even sure why. Think ive won it once and runner up once in my 4 or 5 years? You?

I don't agree with the notion that it's 70-90% luck. There is definitely some bad luck involved, but that stuff comes in waves and mostly it's up to you.

I don't think this is any hidden secret - draft and pick up the players before they get good. And watch the games so you can see who is actually good.

Coordinators and offensive playcalling head coaches matter.

Offensive lines matter a lot.

Situations matter the most.

First couple of years I played it was all about USA Today. Figuring the points. Arguing that the paper was wrong. Good times.

I have all injured RB's and did not start L. Murray. Hating myself now. 6-5

i havent met anyone yet with a better lifetime win %. seriously.

except maybe jerry, now.
That is not lifetime, that is this year. But not far off. Last year did bad at masters leagues had about 40. Probably lost money. Had over 10 yahoo leagues and took over 5K there won at least 3 250.00 leagues. Just killed them. Just could not go back heavy due to the collusion. Had 9 FFPC teams and 3 made playoffs. Only won 1000.00 off FFPC which was a major loss since I had over to 3K in.

I remember going to your house and glumpy was there(pig cooked to perfection), when it was the first NC FF league with FBG players. I won the league and wife took second. The next year we drafted at BNB's where by dog got to jump of the pier and swim. Man we have been here a long time.
