Otis diet fad of the month thread - Potato mania!!1 (1 Viewer)

Everything I see shows a bodyfat % for a middle aged man between 15% - 18% as good. Unless you want to get pretty ripped, I think this range is pretty healthy.
This would be me at my ideal/target weight. But again, according to BMI, I'd still be on the high end of "overweight"

BMI is a worthless measurement.
It's not totally worthless. Actually I had set a target weight of 205 somewhat arbitrarily two months ago. Now when I calculated my BMI, it tells me that is exactly the weight I need to be within "normal" range. A good gut check if nothing else.

You are 6' 4"+?
No +.
Your penis must be HUGE!
It probably accounts for this 24lbs I need to lose.

If that creepy Martin at Leangains is too technical, which to most he usually is, then I'd recommend who he recommends for IF information. The iLife guy basically ripped them off, so he's fine info-wise, but he's the real creep. Brad (in the link) is worth supporting... IF you naturally and comfortably are capable of IF.

I had 600 calories of beer yesterday and nothing else. I felt great all day and walked a few extra miles extra fasted last night. I dipped beef jerky in homemade quac for breakfast just now. This thread has me thinking of going for 190. I got down there in college... 1986.

Crushed a chicken parm hero last night and chased it with red wine. Was heaven. Best part is it wasn't a cheat, as I had about 300 calories all day before dinner.

BOOM

We are discussing dinner at the Mexican place. Hell yes.

BMI is calculated as (weight in lbs * 703) /(height in inches ^2)

Scale is:

< 18.5 -- Underweight

18.5 -25 -- Normal

25 -30 -- Overweight

> 30 -- Obese

(There are subcategories in the underweight and obese categories)

EDIT: For instance, since I'm 5'10", every 7 lbs is one "point" in BMI (6.97 but close enough). So I can just divide my weight by 7.
18.6 according to internet. I have a super thin frame.

Really wish I had the motivation to work out. Never has been appealing to me. Really considering a rowing machine.

Bmi is stupid. Takes no account for muscle mass versus fat. Most nfl rbs and lbs are "obese" per bmi

First three mile run since starting the diet this weekend. My legs were completely dead and I might have been a bit dehydrated, so it was slow and tough sledding. But it was a nice check-in. Might try to get one slow run in on the weekend each week, building up the distance.

BMI is the most useless stat available, but it's fine for 90% of americans because they have tons of weight to lose.

The lack of a quality BF% meter for home use necessitates that they had to come up with something.

For someone in the near healthy range it should be discarded. Especially if you have visible abs.

Ugh. Went to an easter egg hunt thing for the kid at the park yesterday and everybody brought food. Long story short, I gained 3 lbs yesterday. I didn't even know that was possible.

Probably just water weight. Had you been relatively low carb before?
Water weight changes pounds

Fat changes inches.

If your waistline of your pants fits virtually the same as yesterday it was water weight.

Yeah I've seen it fluctuate a lot especially when you are going low carb. I just tend to thing you body holds onto a lot less water when you are in ketosis. Looking to kick back in this week. I lost about 10lbs, then stagnated, now I'm looking to tackle that next 10.

:goodposting: I hit my low yesterday and I'm back up 2lbs today

Glycogen is hydroscopic. Glycogen varies by total weight so as you lose total weight you need less glycogen stores which means less water.

Low carb dieters carry less glycogen because the body gets used to pulling on fat for fuel, but this effect varies wildly from one person to the next.

You can get the exact same effect by sitting in a sauna. Water doesn't just pool in one spot it is all over.

I'm right at my interim goal that I set for Spring Break which starts tomorrow. Hoping I can gain no more than 4-5lbs while on vacation and then get right back on the wagon when I get back in a week.

Just over half way to my ultimate goal...

Congrats, we're approaching that time of year where the resolve often starts to wane a bit. Stay strong fellas.

As for me, I'm sitting at 207 with an eyeball test of about 13% bf (maybe a hair less). I'be been counting calories just over 8 weeks now and according to my spreadsheet have a total deficit of 23,400 calories or just under 6.7 pounds. The reason I'm at less than a pound a week is weekend booze and the snacking that goes with it. Still, all in all, not terrible since I've enjoyed myself and have been largely able to offset my bad days. I'd like to settle around 200 - 202 with 11% bf or so. From there I'll eat at maintenance for the summer and begin a slow bulk in the fall to build more muscle.

And for those curious about the effect of extended calorie deficits on their lifts, my main lifts are all down roughly 10% or so. I've also been super tired lately as I've kept up my weight work and cardio this entire time. I seem to fall out around 10pm each night and often feel achy and sore following lifting days. All in all it's been worth it though as I've kept a decent amount of muscle so far. Hopefully it won't melt much more during these last few pounds.

Completely unprepared for the ridiculous rains yesterday. I normally get my steps in by walking to and from work and walking about 10 blocks to get lunch. Couldn't do any of that yesterday, so I ended up jumping on the treadmill and jogging four miles. Which I wasn't really all that prepared to do. Feeling it this morning. That's going to be the challenge for me. In the past, changes in my life have caused changes in my routine (leaving a job meant leaving a convenient gym and a cafeteria where I knew exactly what I could have for lunch).

194.7 this morning. Lowest I've been since 1984. Abs exposing themselves. Feeling great. Awesome weather lately. I'm in the middle of a landscaping project doing physical labor all day. I'm alternating resistance hiit sessions one night with 5 mile hikes the next. Finished yesterday at 750 calories total -- three veggie tacos and a protein shake. I'm doing the same today unless I don't.

I'll be in Vegas for the long weekend so...

How accurate is the fitbit scale for body fat %?

Any low-carbers out there that come across shirataki pasta and think it'd make a good substitute, do yourself a favor and keep walking. OMG that stuff is disgusting. Horrendous. It tastes of evil and corruption. It's an internationally recognized form of torture. It kills puppies for its own amusement. It took the Lindbergh baby. It was the sole perpetrator of the 2004 tsunami.

In other words, I didn't care for it.

Worse than wiener dogs?

Yes. And that's saying a lot.

If I remember right, it's also a soy product that will give you (bigger) man #######.

Tried to do a semi-keto diet for 3-4 weeks now and I'm throwing in the towel. Keto is apparently something you can't half-###. I lacked the discipline to keep carbs below 50g and drinking bourbon every night instead of beer just led to me getting drunk on weeknights.

Back to my January diet of morning shakes with kale/cucumber/carrot/berries, meals of brisket& turkey, and the "occasional" IPA/stout. My body really likes the vitamins and nutrients of fruits & veggies.

I answered my hotel door this morning shirtless and the young housekeeper couldn't stop checking me out, even dropped her clipboard she was so in awe. It made this old ******* feel pretty studly.

This is true for me. And this is about when I fell off last year. I've got some craziness in the house right now with two sick kids (one a newborn) and struggling to stay on a schedule and it is taking its toll. I haven't been logging my food well in recent days, but I'm committed to fixing that. I just need to work through these illnesses, hopefully this weekend I can get some normalcy. We will see. But I am not going to let the wheels come off here, a brief and temporary pause is fine but I refuse to move backwards. Gonna do what I can today to get it right.

GL all.

I finally dipped below 200 today (for the first time in about a decade). I still have about 20 pounds to go before I hit my goal.

Just curious. How does a sick kid make you eat poorly?

I know you think I always point out the cranky, negative side....but it just seems that it's always something. Your in-laws are over. Your wife's birthday. A brunch. A business trip. You were tired. Now the kids are sick.

I just think that, at the end of the day, you need to decide what you're going to eat and why. Just my 0.02.
