Other than injury, is there any reason to think the Bears aren't primed for a record-setting offensive display in 2014?

3 things that concern me:

Forte's age

Garza

WR3

Jay Cutler...

Not a fan of the contract. Could've saved money, spent it on defense, given McCown a two year contract and brought in a rookie to sit and learn.

Spending big money in free agency isn't a recipe for success. Keeping your own guys and paying them usually is.

On that list I only agree with Garza and that is only because of his age and chronic knee injury that he plays through. Garza is one of the hardest working players on the team and in the weight room and gives it his all which doesn't appear to be good enough any more because he is probably the weakest link on their offensive line. I appreciate what he has done over the years but I think it is time to move on.

They should start thinking about or looking now for Forte's eventual replacement because 30 seems to be the magical number for running backs to start having a big drop off in production and he is currently 28.

Wilson might be a great WR3 eventually. In interviews I have heard some of the coaches and players gush over his raw talent. You can probably find a WR3 that would come relatively cheaply through free agency as well.

Spending wisely on free agents can be smart. Tim Jennings, Slauson, Martellius Bennett, and Jermon Bushrod were all free agent signings. Those have all worked out well. And as far as big money free agent signings, Julius Peppers was a great free agent signing. Peppers is maybe being overpaid now but he has been a stud over the years.

There have been a lot of free agent signings that really don't work out, particularly big money free agents. Some players that come to mind are Greg Jennings, Mario Williams, Steven Jackson, Jared Cook, and Mike Wallace. But on the other hand some do, Wes Welker, Jake Long, Brent Grimes, and Reggie Bush. So it really depends on the player and the situation.

And which of your own free agents do you want to resign? Henry Melton and Tillman are probably going to get big money. Melton is a big injury risk and Tillman is 32. Garza is a possiblility, but I think Garza is the weak link on that line. Are you wanting to sign Major Wright or Craig Steltz? I would gladly take Wright to the airport myself. Wright is awful and Steltz can't beat him out. This defense was historically bad, so why would signing the players you had be a priority? I think that Nate Collins and Corey Wooten might be good signings, but in most cases you can find better value signing players from some where else. When you stink you don't improve by keeping the players you had.

Fired DL and LB coach but kept Tucker. I'm not sure why they took the fall but not Tucker, but at least they did something.

Eta:I'll get to that post, twistd

Everything runs through the DC, if there was a problem, Tucker should have been able to change it. Not sure I see this changing anything

Here are my thoughts for the Bears this off season:

1. The Cutler's deal isn't that bad. And those Cutler bashers I ask them one question: who would you rather have? McCown? He has been a career backup player and look at other backups that were a flash in the pan: Matt Flynn, Brian Hoyer, Matt Cassel? Whether you like it or not, for better or worse, he's our best option

2. The fact that Cutler's deal is technically a 3 year deal, consider it a 3 year plan with the Bears. With Marshall's contract coming up, the timing works out.

3. Cutler is the only QB that can keep Marshall in check. I'm sure that if Cutler was let go, you will see the the diva side of Brandon Marshall, which will implode our offense.

4. Obviously our offense is pretty much set for another year, but a backup at Center, Running Back and obviously Quarterback (rookie project) would be great

5. The most glaring need is defense. I hope we can sign one of the FA safeties like Jarius Byrd or TJ Ward and address our CBs as well as find a pass rusher.

6. Chris Conte sucks!

7. I really don't think you can blame Mel Tucker for last year's defensive performance. I really think with the injury and the poor backups, he gets a pass. I am not a fan of his, but I would like to see how he does next year with upgraded personnel.

Candidates for HBO's "Hard Knocks" this year - Cardinals, Bills, Bears, Jaguars NY Giants Raiders, Steelers St. Louis

I know anyone can edit Wiki pages, but it's interesting that this is currently on Paul Pasqualoni's page:

Paul Pasqualoni (born August 16, 1949) is an American football coach who is currently the Linebackers Coach for the Chicago Bears.
Rich Campbell, Tribune reporter 2:26 p.m. CST, January 21, 2014

MOBILE, Ala.-- Longtime college coach Paul Pasqualoni is expected to join the Chicago Bears' defensive staff, two people with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday. Whether Pasqualoni fills the Bears' vacant linebackers coach or defensive line coach position has not been finalized, one source said. He has NFL experience coaching both positions. Pasqualoni, 64, is in Mobile at the Senior Bowl this week. He declined to confirm he has been hired. Pasqualoni, perhaps best known for coaching Syracuse from 1991-2004, has six seasons of NFL experience. He coached the Dallas Cowboys' tight ends in 2005 and their linebackers from 2006-07. He was the Miami Dolphins' defensive coordinator from 2008-09. In 2010, the Cowboys promoted him from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator when Wade Philllps was fired as head coach after eight games. He left Dallas for the University of Connecticut in 2011 but was fired after starting 0-4 last season. The Bears in 2013 ranked last in the NFL in yards allowed per play (6.18) and last in yards allowed per rush (5.35).

You know, as much as I love the fact that we are getting some offensive players into the Pro Bowl, a part of me doesn't like the fact that when their rookie contracts are up, they will be asking for more money.

Hope Alshon doesn't go to too many pro bowls, haha

There's nothing like hitting big on a young offensive guy. Big time difference maker for cheap. Not used to it with the Bears.

Naturally, Herring and Pasqualoni's backgrounds as coaches on teams that play 3-4 defensive fronts lead to speculation the Bears could be considering making the transition away from their 4-3 defense. But it would be premature to make that assumption given the team’s current personnel, and the fact the Bears haven’t yet added players that could assimilate to a 3-4 front.

That’s not to say it won’t happen. After all, Bears defensive coordinator Mel Tucker is well-versed in 3-4 defense, and has coached it at Cleveland and sparingly in Jacksonville.

That solves the Shea McClellan problem. Not a big fan of the 3 - 4 although they may transition there in a controlled fashion. Draft will tell a lot.

The Chicago Tribune confirms 2012 first-round pick Shea McClellin will convert to strong-side linebacker this offseason.
After failing as a pass-rush specialist, the Bears hope to salvage McClellin's career as a stand-up linebacker, where GM Phil Emery believes he can upgrade the team's run defense. Chicago's hope is McClellin will make like Seahawks DE-turned-SLB Bruce Irvin and allow the Bears to field as many athletes on defense as possible. McClellin mostly played with his hand up at Boise State.

About time. Good news nonetheless.

This probably signals that Chicago won't resign James Anderson.

In other news, I hope they sign Michael Bennett(his brother is Martellus)

(1/31/2014) Giants defensive end Justin Tuck will be talking contract with his team soon, but doesn't expect it to amount to much. He appears destined for free agency.

"I think players would rather not hit free agency for the most part," he told The Star-Ledger. "That means that the team they're playing for at the time is pretty good and they want to stay and that team is giving them the amount of money they want to play for. So ... most people would rather not get to free agency, but it is an exciting time for me. ... I'll just go with the flow."

Tuck led the Giants this season with 11 sacks, including a whopping 8 1/2 in the last five games.
Any chance the Bears would have any interest? Can they afford him?

I hope we sign either Michael Johnson or Michael Bennett and if money allows, sign Jairus Byrd or TJ Ward....those would be money signings, which would be a nice situation going into the draft.

If we release, Earl Bennett, Peppers and Michael Bush, we should have close to $20 million under the cap to make some splashes.

Carimi released from the Bucs today. Guess Lovie didn't want to deal with one of his/Angelo's old mistakes.

It's early, but I'm going back and forth between FSU DT Tim Jernigan and Bama S Ha Ha Clinton Dix for the 1st rounder.

Press conference today. Emery restated Shea would be competing for a spot as LB. :fistpump: He'll be gone after this year IMO. Wants Melton back. Noncommittal on Peppers and Tillman.

It appears to me that the Bears will be taking one of the following 3 players with their first pick. Here they are in my personal favorite order:

Aaron Donald

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Timmy Jernigan

I would have Clinton-Dix number 1 as our safeties are pure ca ca right now, but Donald looks to be a major disruptive influence in the middle of the line.

Resigned Garza to a 1 year deal. He's at the back end of his career, but I really felt not changing that o-line for one more year is the best plans. Get that rookie right side really turned into pro football players then next year get a young center in the 2nd or 3rd round to be our long term starter.

Haven't seen any numbers yet, but I bet it wasn't too much over vet min.

The rumours I have seen are 1.5m for 1 year. I really wanted him replaced, but with so many needs on the D side of the ball I can see him being kept another year.

Edit to add: Just looked up some Bear stats on NFL.com.

Bears power running stat

(rushes of 2 yards or less in goal to go and 3rd/4th down situations)

When the Bears rushed to the left they converted those situations 58% of the time.

When the Bears rushed to the right they converted those situations 50% of the time.

When the Bears rushed up the middle they converted those situations 25% of the time.

Bears negative vs. 10+y ard gains

Rushing left there were 19 negative (41%) vs. 27 10+ yards gains (59%)

Rushing right there were 20 negative (43%) vs. 27 10+ yards gains (57%)

Rushing up the middle there were 4 negative (50%) vs. 4 10+ yards gains (50%)

Bears rushing first downs gained

Rushing left they picked up 44 first downs

Rushing right they picked up 12 first downs

Rushing up the middle they picked up 46 first downs

(This one doesn't really mean much as total attempts were not broken out, so they probably just didn't rush middle as often)

If Peppers is cut and Wooten hits FA, we will enter FA with Courtney Washington and David Bass as our only DEs. Wow

And DT isn't much better off. How is Phil going to get this turned around to be a competitive D while the O is ready to win?
