I'll repost this from the old thread:

Funny thing on looking at 2011 and the previous draft before it. The only constant here is Trent Baalke, at least physically. What I'm finding interesting are the Head Coaches, their respective personalities, the players drafted in those respective years each, their personalities that resonate with the Head Coach that leads to both a signature draft each with true studs, and a couple of other strong players on the current roster:

2010 draft - Head Coach: Mike Singletary

2010 1 11 Anthony Davis T 2013 0 0 4 29 64 Rutgers 2010 1 17 Mike Iupati G 2013 1 2 4 35 60 Idaho 2010 2 49 Taylor Mays DB 2013 0 0 0 7 50 USC 2010 3 91 NaVorro Bowman LB 2013 3 2 3 50 64 3 9.0 Penn St. 2010 6 173 Anthony Dixon RB 2013 0 0 0 4 64 148 458 8 9 47 0 Mississippi St. 2010 6 182 Nate Byham TE 2013 0 0 1 0 29 11 83 1 Pittsburgh 2010 6 206 Kyle Williams WR 2013 0 0 1 7 39 8 76 0 47 574 4 Arizona St. 2010 7 224 Phillip Adams DB 2013 0 0 0 7 53 3 South Carolina St.

It's very apparent now, even though I've said this all along, that this draft is Mike Singletary's, not Trent Baalke's. Why? All Singletary wanted to do in the offense was run the ball, and on defense, defend the run. He was asked if they would consider drafting a QB. He didn't think they would. They didn't, and thus Taylor Mays.

Key players here are obviously Davis, Iupati, and Bowman.

This is huge, because these are fresh key blocks on top of what was already built. Smash mouth on either side, with Dixon adding even more size. Singletary wanted more smash mouth. The players mentioned reflect that.

Outside of an Anthony Davis tweet, not much noise in the media about them that's bad.

2011 draft - Head coach: Jim Harbaugh

2011 1 7 Aldon Smith DE 2013 1 1 2 22 43 1 42.0 Missouri 2011 2 36 Colin Kaepernick QB 2013 0 0 1 24 32 382 639 5046 31 11 157 937 9 Nevada-Reno 2011 3 80 Chris Culliver DB 2013 0 0 0 4 32 3 South Carolina 2011 4 115 Kendall Hunter RB 2013 0 0 0 11 43 0 0 0 0 0 262 1202 7 27 268 0 Oklahoma St. 2011 5 163 Daniel Kilgore OL 2013 0 0 0 1 33 Appalachian St. 2011 6 182 Ronald Johnson WR 2012 0 0 0 0 0 USC 2011 6 190 Colin Jones DB 2013 0 0 0 3 44 TCU 2011 7 211 Bruce Miller DL 2013 0 0 2 5 45 16 39 0 48 410 1 Central Florida 2011 7 239 Michael Person OL 0 0 0 Montana St. 2011 7 250 Curtis Holcomb DB 2012 0 0 0 0 0 Florida A&M

Trent Baalke was Exec of the Year because of this draft.

So far:

Aldon Smith - probably not going to be with the 49ers in 2014, or at least play. What do you call this? A bust? A HUGE bust? Not because he can't play. It's rather how bad his behavior reflects on Baalke and the FO. Someone has to own up to Smith eventually. But what is he more a reflection of? The GM? Or the HC?

Colin Kaepernick - Ok, this is Harbaugh's guy all along. Until Harbaugh finds another guy. Even then, Harbaugh might bring in a Vet that's more his guy just because he's Harbaugh. I mean, he told everybody Alex Smith was his guy. But he's Harbaugh. Who better else reflects Harbaugh than Kaepernick?

Chris Culliver - Still not an answer. Even more now a question mark. Obviously has issues that again reflects both in the past and present poorly on the 49ers. Plus he was torched in the Super Bowl. After creating controversy.

All three have been in the news with bad press over the past few weeks. Kilgore also earlier with a drunken incident. Hunter is likely gone, and the only player that is proving a nice one is Bruce Miller, but that's more on Harbaugh's staff.

Again, the only physical constant is Baalke, I mean outside of Tomsula and the equipment manager and such.

So here is two different head coaches, two drafts in consecutive years, with the same NFL franchise that includes the same owners, stadium, Jed York and Paraag Marathe, and Trent Baalke.

Your thoughts?

ETA: sorry for the draft format. I will try to fix that.

I don't have much to add at this point, but maybe I can add value by cleaning up Drummer's cut'n'paste using the code /code tags.

Code:

4 Prime Time games...not bad. Also after going to New York week 11, the team doesnt do much taveling with 4 of the final 6 games at home, and the 2 road games being in Oakland and Seattle. Then close the season with 2 home games.

Seattle twice in 3 weeks, including Thanksgiving night at Levi Stadium. Dammit I might try to make it to that game!!!

Looks like 11-5 today.

I'm really warming up to Dee Ford at 30 if all the cbs are gone. I know everybody wants to mock us moving up for Cooks, but I'd rather get the pass rusher we need ( I still feel pass rush was our weak spot last year and with Aldons issues...) and get a Jordan Mattews or Benjamin in 2.

Really don't want to move up for a WR. This years WR class is stacked. Much rather move up for a CB - Gilbert and Dennard at the top of the wishlist.

Dennard fell and we could've traded up to get him, we have enough picks and he is the guy that plugs the biggest hole this season. We didn't move. Even so, Lee fell and we take ####### Jimmy Ward.

This is a major disappointment!

horrible pick, what was that? Trade back instead of making that pick. For now, value wise, that was the worst pick of round 1.

I wanted Lee or Roby, or they could have traded up and taken Denard instead of wasting the pick.

I hope I am wrong...

With the Niners standing pat today, I fully expect they will use one of those third rounders to trade up in round 2.

You guys are absolutely nuts. This guy looks like he could step in and start at the nickel spot right away. Gives them some injury insurance at S, which is big with Reid having concussion issues. The drop off to Dahl is pretty steep. I would have loved to get a top WR but Ward will probably play more than their #3 WR anyway.

Agree. I think it was a solid pick. Once Beckham started sniffing the top 10 it was going to be tough to get him and I think he was the last of the WR's worth trading up for. I was hoping for Fuller but understand the move. This gives them a physical nickel corner who can help at both safety spots if needed. I believe he was graded as one of the best cover safeties in the draft with a round 1-2 grade. Sure he may have been a reach but with the number of picks they have it doesn't really make sense to trade back and risk losing him if they thought that was a possibility.Hoping they make some moves today and grab a WR (Lee or Latimer would be nice) and maybe another CB. A lot of talent left for them to choose from.

I like the deal. They don't have to reach for a WR in the draft with Patton, Lloyd, and Johnson - two of those guys should make the team and odds are one of them will be a solid contributor as the WR3. Maybe they will still go after a burner that has ST value but they don't have to do so in the second round.

Love the trade for Stevie Johnson. Still have 5 picks today to work with.
Woah. This is the first I've herd of this, been away from home all day. I like it!Crabs, Boldin, VD, Stevie, Patton/Lloyd

Respectable stable right there.

Amen brother.

My short list for today is 2 of Louis Nix, Stanley Jean Baptiste, Van Noy....

eta--I like the Ward pick. I saw him mocked in the 20s all pre-draft. Can play slot and is versatile enough to play S and CB. I really wanted Marquis, but with the Johnson move (which I'm sure they had in their pocket already), the Ward pick looks even better.

I like it. Get who many consider the best RB in the draft late in the second round when still have another two picks in the round. Backup RBs were uninspiring next season. Now with Hyde and perhaps Lattimore, the Niners are prepared in the event Gore declines and ready to move on without him in the near future. With three third rounders, the Niners really have their choice of any couple remaining players they want in this draft, and there's a ton of talent still out there. Let's see what they do ...

OK, now four third rounders. Not sure why moving down to stockpile third rounders rather than using them to move up in 2nd.

I think they should trade 3-30 and 3-36 to move up to the top of the third, draft there and at 3-6, and try to trade 3-13 for a 2015 second rounder.

I really like the trade for Steve Johnson. Guy is a borderline stud for three seasons playing in the cold with scrubs throwing to him. His production drops for one season because of injuries and we get him cheap. Reminds me of the Dodgers' trade for Hanley Ramirez.

By the end of this ####### draft they'll have 7 6th round picks.

I think they are having an awful draft.
I agree here. Why are they moving down with so many picks that they started with?

Seems like it's VBD gone amok.... at some points, you've wasted your valuable, early picks for an infinite number of late round ones.

Granted, I'm not a football expert, but I want to :yucky: right now.

Ahhhh, I don't mind trading the third rounder buy why are we moving back to get another late rounder? Trade it for a 2015 pick.

Traded 3-30 down again? For what?

ETA: 4-6 + something else it appears.

I'm completely befuddled by Balke's strategy this year.

I don't get it. With all those 2nd and 3rd round picks, they should have had a bunch of guys targeted there. They don't have the roster space for sixth rounders. And they aren't even getting many picks for next year. Just weird.
