Student Arrested For Writing About Killing a Dinosaur (1 Viewer)

Yes, that's right - a dinosaur:

According to Live 5 News, a Summerville, South Carolina student was suspended from Summerville High School and arrested by police after he wrote a fictional story about killing a dinosaur with a gun for a class writing assignment. Last Tuesday, 16-year-old Alex Stone was asked by his teacher to write a paragraph describing himself, followed by another sentence in the style of a Facebook status. Stone attempted to take a comedic approach to the assignment.

Describing the first-person fictional account that he penned for the school project, the teen told Live 5 News, “I killed my neighbor’s pet dinosaur, and, then, in the next status I said I bought the gun to take care of the business.” What happened next shocked Stone’s mother, as the boy was taken from class, suspended from school, detained for disturbing schools, and then arrested on charges of disorderly conduct. Authorities searched his locker and backpack and did not find a weapon. According to police, Stone maintained that his story about killing a dinosaur was intended to be interpreted as a joke.

Stone’s mother, Karen Gray, is upset that she was not contacted prior to the point at which school officials had her son arrested. Said Gray, “If the school would have called me and told me about the paper and asked me to come down and discussed everything and, at least, get his point-of-view on the way he meant it. I never heard from the school, never. They never called me.” Karen Gray also pointed out the fact that dinosaurs no longer exist, implying school officials should have been able to tell that Stone’s story was not a threat against the school.

According to The Washington Post, police claim Stone was arrested following an angry outburst that happened while police searched his locker. Dorchester District 2 officials appeared to mischaracterize Stone’s fictional story to the media by telling ABC News 4 Charleston that he was suspended for writing about bringing a weapon to school.

David Aylor, Stone’s lawyer, was quoted by ABC News 4 Charleston as saying, “This is a perfect example of ‘political correctness’ that has exceeded the boundaries of common sense. The arrest and suspension of my client is completely absurd and further erodes the confidence parents and taxpayers have in our teachers and administrators who are tasked with educating our children and preparing them for higher education or entering the work force.” Aylor is fighting the disorderly conduct charge and is attempting to appeal Stone’s week-long suspension from school.

The teenager told Live 5 News that he didn’t want to go back to Summerville High School. He said, “I regret it because they put it on my record, but I don’t see the harm in it.” Looking back on how he worded the story, Stone did feel that “there might have been a better way of putting it.” Tuesday’s arrest and suspension happened on Stone’s second day of class for the year, which happens to be his freshman year and first impression of high school.

According to The National Geographic, scientists estimate that dinosaurs have been extinct for approximately 65 million years.

Still probably an overreaction but it sounds like he was arrested for the outburst over searching his locker not for writing the story.

Lol at sourcing the opinion that dinosaurs ever existed and have been extinct for longer than the earth has been around. Like we need to hear about some liberal rag like national geographic in a story about the ivory tower elite trying to take away or right to even talk about guns

I don't understand what made the school believe he brought the dino killing gun (or any gun) to the school on the basis of the story and the fictitious FB update

Of course it seems like a crazy overreaction, but we don't know the school's side of the story. There could be more to it or it could be wild paranoia or a misunderstanding. Regardless, it's wildly misleading to say the kid was suspended for writing a story about shooting a dinosaur. If you want to exaggerate things, a kid at my high school was arrested for taking too long to poop. Of course, that leaves out 90% of what happened.

A few years ago my school expelled a kid for violating the dress code.*

*He was wearing big, baggy denim shorts with little pot leaves all over them**

**The dean had him change into some school-issue gym shorts. When the kid handed the weed jeans over to the dean a knife fell out of the pocket.***

***When the dean checked the rest of the pants he found a baggy with 4 joints in it.

Make way for the "public schools are horrible" kooks.
So this school acted properly in this case, or shall we just call out the boogeyman.
It is one school, this is not representative of the public school system. It is really extreme to have the police search his locker. That said, the kid was arrested for throwing some kind of fit with the police, not for writing the story.
It made for a better title, but without the search of his locker due to writing about killing dinosaurs he never would have been arrested.

I agree, it seems like an overreaction. That said, we don't know the whole story. It could have been a misunderstanding, maybe another student saw or overheard him write about bringing a gun to take care of business and the teacher/administrator they told about it had no knowledge of the dinosaur part.

If I were to speculate, it probably had to do with some ridiculous zero-tolerance rule which usually leads to stupid outcomes when all common sense is eliminated.

So he actually took ten poops?
No. He was gone for so long that the teacher was concerned. She had a hall monitor check on him. He got very agitated with the hall monitor in the bathroom. He refused to leave the bathroom saying that it was right to stay in the bathroom as long as he wanted, lots of swearing, said he could take a 2 hour #### if he wanted. The AP came in. The kid got in his face, verbally berated him, was balling up his fists, breaking things in the bathroom and refusing to come out. The cops were called and he refused to leave the bathroom and berated the cops. They cuffed him and took him away. We did not press charges, but he was suspended and given community service at the school. So he was suspended for taking too long of a dump.

So he's 16 years old and just starting as a freshman in high school?
Maybe he had some sort of disability and the school was being extra cautious because of it.
Or was expelled for a school year in the past. Did the article say he was starting high school? Some schools don't move students on unless they have enough credits (like college) and so if the kid failed some classes last year, he could still be considered a freshman. The school I work at does this and we have some 18 year old freshman.

Yeah, there are a lot of reasons why a kid might start his freshman year at the age of 16...and most of them point to something sketchy about the kid.

Now imagine the dinosaur was black.
Awesome. To this day, that line(movie) is simply fantastic. As far as the kid getting arrested, I would be livid if I was the parent.
So you think the cops came to the school and arrested the kid for writing the word gun on a piece of paper?
Yes....the cops came to school because he wrote the words gun and take care of business. The arrest was because the kid felt he was being harrassed and misbehaved, but it all stemmed from the teacher calling in the cops because of the class assignment.

Investigators say the teacher contacted school officials after seeing the message containing the words "gun" and "take care of business," and police were then notified on Tuesday.

Did you even read what you quoted? Where does it say the teacher called the cops?
