It appears e-sports have caught the attention of The Worldwide Leader in Sports.

Valve announced it is partnering with ESPN to broadcast The International Dota 2 Championships, which start in Seattle on July 18.

The tournament will be carried live through ESPN3, and an exclusive preview show highlighting The International's final match will appear on ESPN 2. It will also include highlights, analysis and interviews with players and Valve's Gabe Newell.
Dang. Valve beat Riot to the punch. Wonder who will pick up the League of Legends World Championship.

From Wikipedia

Dota 2 is a 2013 multiplayer online battle arena video game and the stand-alone sequel to the Defense of the Ancients (DotA) Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne mod. Developed by Valve Corporation, Dota 2 was released as a free-to-play title for Microsoft Windows, concluding a public beta testing phase that began in 2011. OS X and Linux versions of Dota 2 were released on July 18, 2013. The game is available exclusively through Valve's content-delivery platform, Steam.

Dota 2 is played in discrete matches involving two five-player teams, each of which occupies a stronghold at a corner of the map. Each stronghold contains a building called the "Ancient", which the opposite team must destroy to win the match. Each player controls a "Hero" character and focuses on leveling up, collecting gold, acquiring items and fighting against the other team to achieve victory.

Development of Dota 2 began in 2009, when the developer of the DotA mod, IceFrog, was hired by Valve as lead designer. Dota 2 was praised by video game critics, who lauded its rewarding gameplay, enhanced production quality and faithfulness to its predecessor. However, the game was criticized for its steep learning curve and inhospitable community. Dota 2 has become the most actively played game on Steam, with daily peaks of over 800,000 concurrent players.[5]

On the Release date of Starcraft. Korea cancelled school and companies shutdown. It's no joke over there

They air plenty of stuff more boring than watching people deathmatch. The videos get a lot of hits so there is clearly a market.

Some of those players make bank. If your kid isnt an athlete make sure you buy them a computer. One day gaming might even be organized at a collegiate level if there is enough money in it. Im sure it makes more money than some collegiate sports.

Your kid could get a scolarship playing starcraft.

I get the "e" part but where exactly does "sports" fit in here?
it's not a sport. It's a term used by gamers to make themselves feel active.

ESPN also shows poker, scrabble and spelling bees so video games isn't too far of a stretch.

Why doesnt gaming have a right to be called a sport like some other brain games?

Sport is about competition and not neccessarily an athletic one

Heres a good comparison

Archery is a sport, but its barely physical and is a skill.

Being an RTS champion takes a ton of skill as well and is barely physical but takes good hand/eye coordination like archery or skeet shooting.

So if archery, shooting and even bowling are considered sports then why cant gaming?

It takes a lot of time to train those skills.

Can we bet on this?
Yep. EG and Newbee are fearsome teams this year IMO.
There's one.

EG vs DK is going to be awesome.

So i clicked on the link to see what this is all about and the chat channel on the right hand side is going at warp speed. I don't know how many people are typing random nonsensical things but it's got to be a bunch. Pretty sure that is why ESPN is getting in on this.

You should be fair to something that takes a lot.

That's Twitch, the primary Western website for livestreaming entertainment. This event is being broadcast here, ESPN3, chinese streaming sites, and inside the game's client.

League of Legends (similar game style) is even more popular and has a more prevalent broadcast format (weekly games like NFL) across US, Europe, and Korea. In Korea, LoL teams have huge corporate sponsors (not just gaming-related ones in US/Europe) and it's on broadcast television.

I really think gaming has a future in the western world, too bad I don't have much means to invest in it.

This isn't a winning argument and probably only one that exacerbates the perspective people have about gaming. We don't need to beg for legitimacy, just let the games, events, and numbers prove themselves to be entertaining, like we already know they can be.

That would have been a better response if you disagree with me rather than "just stop" which is rude and adds nothing to the conversation.

Plenty of people are joking on it for being called a sport by some people so im responding to that. Im not just saying things because I like hearing myself type.
