WR Josh Gordon, KC (13 Viewers)

The Gordon owner in my dynasty league has made a public offer to everyone in the league - a $20 bet that Gordon will play by the end of 2015. Should he not play, we'd each win $20, should he play (at least one offensive snap), we'd owe him $20 each. I'm leaning no - but not nearly as far as I was a few weeks ago.

Manziel (with his rolling up bills in bathrooms in Vegas) with Gordon on the same team would be pretty much the best show on television.
I don't have a problem with him doing blow but why does his people allow for the pictures to be taken?
He got away with breaking some pretty stiff NCAA violations. Got away with it and turned it into his signature touchdown move. Now you are asking why he thinks he needs to worry about getting caught doing something?

And this comes in a thread where some people are advocating someone gets off easy on a DUI arrest.

He's done...and Goodell is letting him cross 't's and dot the 'i's on his own suspension.

I'm not gonna throw out the 'he needs to get help' or 'addiction' cards because its probably really not that serious. Blowing .09 isn't an alcoholic and smoking some weed isn't like the 'stealing your neighbors lawn mower to trade for crack' kind of drug problem. The only serious part is that he's too DUMB and childish to recognize what's at stake right now. It's like a teenager that lacks the perspective to see that hanging with your stoner/party buddies that enable you to be DUMB and childish is only gonna be great until it starts costing you jobs and money.

He'll grow up one day. Unfortunately it'll probably be after he's broke and his physical talents can't save him anymore.

Maybe if we question his manhood Soulfly will come out of hiding and take some lumps. After all he still has a chance of being correct...Maybe Gordon still gets less than 16 games. Soulfly, you know what you are if you don't get in here and face the music. It starts with a P and ends with a Y. That should do it, he should be here any minute...No man lets another man call him that without defending himself.
Maybe if you respond to every marijuana thread insisting that it is an addiction, that will make it so.
Is that you Soulfly?
My wife pulls on her hair when she gets nervous. Is that an addiction or a bad habit? Weed is not addictive, no matter how you spin it.

That's an addiction called trichotillomania.

I'm not worried about Gordon - if a washed up Ochocinco can play in Canada at 36 then so can he.

Soulfly deserves what ever he gets after the theatrics he put on in this thread even when people were trying to tell him what was up he threw aside the facts as if they were irrelevant, this guy will not show his face. The second he does the comedy will begin.

I sent him a PM demanding my apology. :lol:

I smoked weed for over 35 yrs. When it was available I was a chronic user, and for at least the last 15 yrs I used it I hardly ever was without. If it is physically addicting it is to such a mild degree that it's meaningless. It absolutely can be psychologically addicting to a larger degree, depending on the person and how much and the strength of what you smoke. There were times when I decided I was going to quit but when the last bit was gone I would get apprehensive as hell but it was because I knew what my withdrawal would consist of, which was simply about 5 sleepless nights. And the reason there is because I used to smoke it before bedtime so I got dependent on it to fall asleep. The sleepless nights sucked because I had to get up at 6AM and didn't get home until 6PM and I hated being sleep deprived. But I was the only one I knew that had any kind of issue upon abstinence. I can't think of one person over those 35 yrs that I ever heard of having any kind of withdrawal. If you are a chronic smoker and smoke it all day long you can experience some extremely minor withdrawal like mine possibly. If you want to call that addiction, well there are probably people that have worse addictions to chocolate and certainly with caffeine. So we are talking bottom of the food chain of addiction, if that.

EDIT: By 'sleepless nights' I should have said trouble falling and staying asleep.

Good grief :^ / It's like a caffeine addiction at worst. People want to call it an addiction so bad they'll grab at any straw. It's like saying a guy who has a monthly subscription to Playboy is addicted to porn (which I have no doubt that someone will chime in to say that's true)

Like a big child: look at me! See I'm right! I would rather you point to the codiene or the drug dealer jail bond or the DUI. Nope the argument is he's addicted to ####### weed. So the NFL states that it's a possibility it could be used for pain treatment and concussions but because a player made childish, stupid, immature decisions and violated a stupid rule (maybe, myself, making a poor assumption it was indeed a positive test for weed and not something else) weed is the problem? Uh, no. The problem is his poor choice in friends, his childish lifestyle and his immature, thinking he's invincible nature. Does the weed smoking need to go? Yep, it enables him and is still against NFL rules but man what a stupid thing to point to as the crux of the problem.

Why this anger over calling it addicting? I'm addicted to soda - have tried to quit many times and have for months at a time but end up always drinking it again. If you want to quit doing something but can't because you like it too much that's an addiction.

I didn't say it was going to kill him, but there's no denying it's addicting for some people.

Whatever.....it's immaterial. Like bojang says, the problem is his friends and lifestyle which he is unwilling to give up. He wants to do both, party and hang out like he's been doing for years and play football, but he can't and may end up paying for it big time. I'm not sure there is any way he can keep the friends but drop the lifestyle and it's not likely he'll drop the friends. This kind of #### happens all the time,it's just in the limelight this time because of who he is and what he could have accomplished. Probably won't sink in until he's older and then he'll probably want to shoot himself. It's not happening because of any addiction as the root cause....it's immaturity and an inability to get his priorities straight. It's easy for most of us to just call that stupidity, and others want to blame something else, but it's likely a lot more complicated than that............but nah, on second thought I'm sticking with stupidity .

Oh, I guess because you say it is so ...then yes you must be right...What have you got..I actually linked earlier in this thread http://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/marijuana-addictive

I guess though I should blindly follow you because you say it is so.

Oh by the way here is their mission statement:

Mission

The mission of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is to lead the Nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction. In this regard, NIDA addresses the most fundamental and essential questions about drug abuse—from detecting and responding to emerging drug abuse trends and understanding how drugs work in the brain and body, to developing and testing new approaches to treatment and prevention. NIDA also supports research training, career development, public education, public-private partnerships, and research dissemination efforts. Through its Intramural Research Program, as well as grants and contracts to investigators at research institutions around the country and overseas, NIDA supports research and training on:

  • The genetic, neurobiological, behavioral, and social mechanisms underlying drug abuse and addiction;
  • The causes and consequences of drug abuse, including the impact on society and morbidity and mortality in selected populations (e.g., ethnic minorities, youth, and women);
  • The relationship of drug abuse to other mental illnesses and to psychosocial outcomes such as unemployment, low socioeconomic status, and violence;
  • Effective prevention and treatment approaches, including a broad research program designed to develop new medications and behavioral therapies for drug addiction;
  • The relationship of drug abuse to cultural and ethical issues such as health disparities; and
  • The relationship of drug abuse to the acquisition, transmission, and clinical course of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, and other diseases, as well as the development of effective prevention/intervention strategies.

I find it interesting that Manziel is being ballyhooed as a kid enjoying the playboy lifestyle, while Gordon is being vilified. It's being said in some circles that Gordon has a "problem" and the Browns should cut him to get him straight. Both fit your description, but within different cultures.

It also sounds like you're saying that in order to play NFL football, one has to give up his friends and lifestyle. I don't know if I'd be willing to be disloyal, myself. What do you do, tell everyone, "See you in ten years"?

FWIW, by the way, I'm convinced it's not just weed. Purple.

One is breaking the law and violating NFL rules over and over again. The other is partying without technically breaking the law (yet) or violating any NFL rules (yet).

See the difference? It wasn't that hard to spot.

It's easy for most of us to just call that stupidity, and others want to blame something else, but it's likely a lot more complicated than that............but nah, on second thought I'm sticking with stupidity .

It wasn't that hard to spot.
right. although, at this rate, i wouldn't be surprised if Manziel ends up there sooner than later.

This kind of #### happens all the time,it's just in the limelight this time because of who he is and what he could have accomplished. to be fair, the person saying Gordon should be cut is not some message board hack. It is Chris Carter who fought many of these same issues and the shock of being cut is what he credits with helping get him the proper perspective to get on track. Now that does not mean it is the right course here, but the person who suggested that has more credibility on this topic than everyone on this board combined

Oh, I guess because you say it is so ...then yes you must be right...What have you got..I actually linked earlier in this thread http://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/marijuana-addictive

I guess though I should blindly follow you because you say it is so.
Did that link come from a .gov? You are linking to a .gov on this topic? :clyde:
If you want a real government education on this matter, get on YouTube, type in "Reefer Madness" and enjoy.

pretty sure cocaine is against the law

That's an interesting take on the situation. To be clear I don't necessarily think Gordon's career is over, but I do think it will be difficult for him to adjust to his time away from the game if/when he is suspended. If he continues to make dumb decisions, hang out with the wrong people, etc, he will have a hard time getting another NFL chance.

That being said, that article seems to be a best-case scenario type thing: Gordon gets suspended, realizes he needs to make some changes, makes those changes, returns to the NFL, and dominates. It also concedes that it is very likely that he won't play in 2014:

It's true that Gordon has almost no hope for playing in 2014, given the latest in a series of incidents to have played out over the past few months.
So, while this article, and POSSIBLE way the scenario could play out offers hope for dynasty owners, there's not nearly as much optimism for re-draft leagues.

My only issue with that article is in the 2nd paragraph. There's never been any indication he will stay out of trouble. Several people have already pointed out his long list of issues since college. It begins to feel like the athlete who has 9 children with 9 different women. After I don't know...the 4th or 5th one, how do you not learn from your mistakes and stop repeating the behavior? After a while you start to think he can't. Like maybe that part of his brain is missing or something.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think his career is over yet. Others have overcome their self destructive nature and had great careers, but I wouldn't bet heavily on it.

There seems to be a weird backlash against people who make statements like this in the fantasy football community, especially among the "experts". I've noticed in a lot of podcasts (the audible especially) and tweets from fantasy writers that you'll basically be considered an idiot if you think Manziel is anything but a typical college kid being a typical college kid. They seem to believe there is no way, no how that he might be in the process of flushing his opportunity down the drain. I'm not saying he is, but I don't think it's stupid to consider the possibility. :shrug:

Yeah...I tend to put a little more stock in Scientific studies than the informal ones you guys conduct on your basement couch......Sorry

I just accepted a $20 bet with the guy who has Gordon in our dynasty league. I'm saying that by the end of week 1 of the 2015 NFL season, Gordon will not have been on the field for a single offensive snap in any NFL game. Fingers crossed.

Well, he was straight up dropped in one of my dynasties. One person bid $150 of free agent money (300 for the year). No one else bid on him. Not worth the headache imo.

Free money.

Look how long it took people to realize what was going on with Gordon. Tons of people are in denial.

Between this thread and the Manziel thread, the amount of judgment going on in the SP is disgusting.

These threads have turned into circle jerks about how messed and hopeless these two are.

Talk about pissing in the pool...

This. I lurked for a while before creating an ID and posting here but this is something that is without a doubt on the rise IMHO.
