QB Brian Hoyer, LV (1 Viewer)

well i am shocked

still not convinced this was not in large part the vikings sucking, but the browns surprised me
The Vikings are a bad football team and the Browns needed trickery to pull out a W. The Browns aren't good either. More pieces already in place to build for the future, but still not expecting > 4 wins though.
but what about hoyer throwing 50+ times/game and statting up the rest of the way?
Exactly. This is all fantasy players should care about.

Just picked him up in my start 2 QB league.

:topcat: :bag:
good deal Tony! I actually took the time to post, before I picked him up. lol

How do you think Hoyer played? I was sorta expecting a good showing tbh, but not quite 38 points (big points League).

Anyone else care to offer input? I mean would it be shocking to not see him play vs. CIN if Weeden is healthy (Cincy has a pick in every game this yr) game reeks of QB2 tbh

Brownie homers, is there any way Weeden plays next week? I just have to get through the Rodgers bye, we have open add drops and i have Hoyer and Weeden burning two spots on my pine and I want to cut Weeden. I didn't see the game yesterday but I figure it would have to be some kind of "Major League" tank the season gimmick for Hoyer not to play next week, right?

39pts for me, too. I was pretty pleased with his production and they are going to be losing more often than not. I see no reason why he couldn't help out weekly throwing the ball to Gordon & Cameron. Of course Geno Smith's 60pts were on my bench, but that is the nature of the beast in 2 QB leagues. Cut down on the INT's and we may have something here.

i am not a browns homer, but the scuttlebutt i have heard is not a chance

if they put Weeden back in, then i will believe they are trying to tank the season. he's done in Cleveland. wouldn't be surprised if he was traded. not that they could get much for him.

Only thing holding me back for dynasty is his age, quite honestly. And the fact that I'm already carrying three QBs in a start 1 QB league.

If he's not claimed on waivers though, I may have to take the chance. I had him on my roster for a bit of last week, but had to cut him for a Kicker.

I'm a Browns fan.

Hoyer is an interesting matchup play in fantasy to cover byes, injuries, and ineffectiveness because of the volume you mentioned though. Just don't be surprised if some of those 350/3/2 weeks are mixed in with some 250/0/4 weeks too.

His first two int's were bad. Stared down his WR, Harrison Smith read his eyes, and just walked in front of the play. There are going to be hair pulling plays like that, but between his pocket mobility, quick decision making, and this offense aggressively going down field it'll lead to more stat heavy days too.

I'm not saying this as an endorsement for Hoyer but I am so confident that Weeden is cooked that I will be dropping him outright in the league I have him in.

Browns got a win and that's the alpha and omega in the NFL. IT would be incredibly difficult to justify going back to Weeden now.

This guy was not the best QB in AZ last year. Think about that.
Dood has never been given a chance
Yeah, he started a game 10 days after being signed midseason to a trainwreck in progress.
The Arizona OL was horrendous last year. It doesn't matter how much talent you have or don't have if you don't have adequate time to throw. I'm not saying he is the next Peyton Manning, but I wouldn't use his AZ time to discount him just yet.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Browns fear Brian Hoyer tore his ACL.
NFL Network's Alex Flanagan had a similar report during last night's game, saying the Browns feared Hoyer "tore ligaments." Hoyer will undergo an MRI Friday and the team will know more after that. Hoyer left the game early in the first half against the Bills after completing 2-of-4 passes. He limped to the sideline after being injured on an awkward slide. It certainly sounds like Hoyer could be done for the season. Brandon Weeden would regain his starting job, though the Browns could take a look at free agent Josh Freeman.

Speaking Thursday, new Browns coach Mike Pettine praised Brian Hoyer, calling him a "winner," and saying his intangibles are "off the charts."
"Winner" and "intangibles" are words typically thrown around when a coach doesn't have anything specific to say, but we don't think Pettine was beating around the bush. Hoyer's intangibles are certainly better than Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell's. That being said, it's almost impossible to believe the Browns are going to throw their weight behind Hoyer without adding some serious competition, perhaps in the form of a first-round pick. According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Hoyer's recovery from his torn ACL is "going well."

The Browns are expected to pay Brian Hoyer's $250,000 roster bonus on March 15.
It confirms that Hoyer will be back with the Browns next season, likely to compete with a draft pick for the starting job. His recovery from October ACL surgery is reportedly "going well." Barring any setbacks, Hoyer should be ready for the start of training camp.

Brian Hoyer (ACL surgery) confirmed at the Super Bowl Friday he remains on track to be ready for training camp.
"I'm feeling great, rehab's going well. Made a lot of progress with the running," Hoyer said. "Definitely on track, if not ahead, looking forward to getting back." The Browns are fully expected to pay Hoyer's $250,000 roster bonus due on March 15. He'll compete with a draft pick for the starting job in 2014.

Rotoworld:

New Browns OC Kyle Shanahan offered praise for Brian Hoyer in his introductory press conference.

However, Shanahan admitted that Hoyer hasn't locked down the starting job. "Everyone’s looking for one of those top five guys," Shanahan said. "If you’re not one of those top five guys, then odds are you’re trying to get replaced. Obviously, no one here has proven they are one of those top five guys. ... But (Hoyer) has shown he can play in this league. You’ve got to see what his ceiling is and how high a level he can reach." Hoyer is atop the Browns' depth chart, but it's written in pencil. The Hoyer "era" in Cleveland will end if/when the Browns use their first-round pick on a quarterback.

Brian Hoyer (knee) said Thursday that he's running, lifting and throwing, and he expects to be ready for team workouts in April.

Hoyer underwent surgery on his torn ACL 17 weeks ago and feels he's progressed beyond the "rehab" phase in his recovery. Coach Mike Pettine also praised Hoyer on Thursday, citing the quarterback's leadership and preparation qualities in addition to his "it" factor. Hoyer currently sits atop the Browns quarterback depth chart but will unquestionably be faced with competition.

Rotoworld:

When asked about his quarterback situation, the first words out of new coach Mike Pettine's mouth were "Brian Hoyer."

"I've always admired Brian from afar. He's proven he can be successful in the NFL," Pettine said. Hoyer is coming off ACL surgery and the Browns will add competition -- very possibly with the No. 4 overall pick. But for now, he's firmly on top of the depth chart.

Brian Hoyer (ACL surgery) reiterated that he expects to participate in most of the offseason program.
Hoyer sustained no other ligament damage besides the torn ACL six months ago, so his recovery has been smooth. Since there won't be any contact when offseason workouts begin next week, he expects to have clearance from doctors. Hoyer enters the spring atop the depth chart. How firm his grip is on the starting job will depend on when the Browns select a quarterback in May's draft.

Brian Hoyer prepping for Cleveland Browns' QB raceBy Kevin Patra

Around the League writer

Brian Hoyer, almost six months removed from tearing his ACL, said he is on track to meet his mid-April goal to participate in the Cleveland Browns' offseason workouts.

The top quarterback on the Browns' depth chart told WKRK-FM on Sunday that he has to meet with doctors one more time to get medically cleared. Hoyer said he wanted to show the new staff he was healthy before the 2014 NFL Draft.

"I saw the opportunity that presented itself," Hoyer said. "I knew we had a minicamp before the draft and I really wanted to push myself to be able to participate as much as I could. With the new staff and GM, (I wanted) to show these guys that I'll be ready to go."

Hoyer is the only quarterback on the Browns' roster to start an NFL game. The 28-year-old knows he's likely to have competition from a rookie.

"It's inevitable," Hoyer said. "In this league, there's constant change. Just by the sheer numbers, someone's coming. Where that might be, no one knows."

Hoyer, who said he welcomes competition, believes he'll have the leg up on any quarterback drafted, whether it be in the first or fifth round.

"You just have to control what you can control," he said. "To look over your shoulder, I don't know what to look over my shoulder at right now, so who knows how it will shake out."

The latest "Around The League Podcast" reviews potential landing spots for DeSean Jackson and declares this week's winners and losers.

Smart to time these updates of his rehab and how he's looking forward to competing from Browns QB Brian Hoyer right now when the Browns are conducting the scheduled private workouts with the top QB prospects of the upcoming draft.

The Browns just had their private workout with Fresno State QB Derrek Carr.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/01/derek-carr-says-his-browns-workout-went-exactly-how-he-wanted/

...Former Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr had a private workout with the Browns on Monday, and he thinks he aced it.

“It went so good,” Carr told Gil Brandt and Alex Marvez on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “Everything went great. It went exactly how we wanted it to and now, of course, we just wait till May and see how they’re feeling.”
So for Hoyer to time reports of his successful rehab and how much he's looking forward to competing against a rookie QB he gets out in front of stories of workout reports like the Derrek Carr workout that apparently went well so instead of the Clevelad media wondering how Brian Hoyer is reacting to these reports he has already anticipated this and has put out his story so he isn't forced to comment on each and every workout report.

I like it.

Brian Hoyer takes reps at Cleveland Browns minicampBy Kevin Patra

Around the League writer

Grab the banjo, ready the maracas and steady the trumpet: Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer participated in drills and took snaps from under center Tuesday.

The 28-year-old signal-caller tore his ACL in October, but he was back on the field as the Browns opened minicamp Tuesday.

Hoyer moved well during the 15 minutes of the workout the media was allowed to view, according to Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer, never favoring his injured knee.

It's a positive sign for the QB-needy Browns that Hoyer was back on the field in a knee brace for the first time in six months.

"He's ahead of schedule," coach Mike Pettine said Tuesday, per The Plain Dealer. "(He) begged me to jump in there on the team stuff."

Hoyer was cleared for 7-on-7 drills, but not 11-on-11s. The team hopes he'll be able to do full-team drills at minicamp and expects him to be full-go by training camp.

Hoyer was the Browns' best quarterback in his three starts last season. The Browns might need Hoyer to play a role in 2014 while coaches work with a young signal-caller.

Pettine told reporters Tuesday he hopes to avoid starting a rookie quarterback right away, even if one is taken at No. 4 overall.

Asked about helping to teach a young quarterback, Hoyer said "I think the best way to tutor is to play well."

Hoyer's progress is something that will be followed closely throughout the offseason.

Taking part in workouts Tuesday was one step, but in the long term it means fairly little a quarterback did drills in April.

It was 12 months ago we were all gushing over Robert Griffin III's phenomenal recovery from ACL surgery. We know how disastrous that situation turned out.

Every injury, surgery and player is different, but much better quarterbacks than Hoyer (see: Tom Brady) have struggled coming off ACL surgery.

Tuesday marked a good day for Hoyer, but it's merely the start of a long summer.

The latest "Around The League Podcast" breaks out the crystal ball and predicts the potential surprises that could shake up the NFL Draft.

Rotoworld:

Coach Mike Pettine said that based on his evaluation of this year's QB draft class, it will be "very difficult" for a rookie to beat out Brian Hoyer.
"I really believe that," Pettine said. "There's that certain it factor [Hoyer] has. Just the way he's attacked his rehab, the way he's attacked learning a new offense. What jumped out was his accuracy." This doesn't sound like the typical coach-speak we hear around draft time. Pettine and the Browns are unlikely to use the No. 4 overall pick on a quarterback.

Browns' Brian Hoyer: I'm not 'sitting at home pouting'

By Marc Sessler

Around the League Writer

If you're Brian Hoyer, Thursday night was far from pretty.

After beginning the day as Cleveland's starting quarterback, Hoyer saw fate step in and drop Johnny Manziel into the lap of the Browns with the 22nd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Hoyer told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport that he reached out to the former Texas A&M playmaker after Commissioner Roger Goodell read the pick. "I just tweeted, 'Welcome to Cleveland,'" Hoyer said. "I don't want people to think I'm sitting at home pouting."

Even after the Browns passed on Manziel at No. 8, Hoyer knew they'd select his competition at some point, saying: "Everybody in America knew we were going to draft a quarterback. It wasn't that big of a shock."

Both coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer have praised Hoyer for his determination on the way back from ACL surgery. Pettine emphasized Thursday that Manziel won't be handed the job, while Farmer went out of his way to text Hoyer, who wrote of the impending quarterback duel: "Bring it on."

When Manziel heard those words on Friday, he told reporters of Hoyer: "I want a guy who's competitive and I wouldn't expect anything less," adding, "I'm the low guy on the totem pole."

"I've said a million times. I have all the confidence in the world in myself," Hoyer said. "So we'll just see how it plays out and do whatever we can to make the team better."

Had Cleveland dialed up Derek Carr or Tom Savage, Hoyer would be on a longer leash to start while a rookie develops in the shadows -- but there's no way to keep Manziel nestled in obscurity.

The last 24 hours have rocked the landscape in Cleveland.

The latest "Around The League Podcast" provides instant reaction to all the wild happenings in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Hoyer was good in his short time last year, but even Campbell looked good and that was Turner's offense. And he will be lacking Gordon most likely at the start of the season, probably at least a half.

Is there any chance Hoyer starts the season as starter, and if so what is his potential in the Shanahan offense?

I think so but he's doomed. If Gordon was there, he would have a fighting chance to retain the job through the year as they are real close to being a contender. Without Gordon, once they drop a few games early, the move will be made.

Rotoworld:

Speaking Thursday, coach Mike Pettine confirmed Brian Hoyer will enter training camp as the Browns' starter, but that he does not have an "insurmountable" lead on Johnny Manziel.

So it begins. The Browns spent the month of May pretending as if Manziel was buried behind Hoyer on the depth chart, but he'll now begin his climb to the top. The Browns did not select the draft's top play-making quarterback to mothball him as a rookie, especially since the fanbase will be clamoring for "Johnny Football" from the second the first snap of the season is taken. We suppose Hoyer has an outside shot at starting in Week 1, but Manziel is the heavy favorite.

The Akron-Beacon Journal's Nate Ulrich believes Brian Hoyer will hold off Johnny Manziel for the starting quarterback job in Cleveland.

Ulrich cites coach Mike Pettine's consistent support of Hoyer and the organization's desire to sign him to a contract extension as evidence the Browns are comfortable entering the season with Hoyer as their starter. While that may be the case, Manziel is clearly the future in Cleveland, and he will get the nod if he performs during camp. At the very latest, we see Manziel taking over Kyle Shanahan's offense by Week 5, following the Browns' Week 4 bye.

That's pretty presumptuous. Hoyer looked pretty good before he got hurt last season.
i'm a big hoyer fan but i can't see him holding off manzier for too long unless he just plays lights out. possible but seems a bit of a long shot.
Also like how Hoyer looked for ALL of his 3 Career starts , and he only finished 2 of them.

Let's keep it In the proper perspective, he played all of 9 quarters of football, and he is coming off of an ACL surgery.

Manziel will likely be the starter, unless he just sucks out loud all thru camp.

I think it will be QB chaos whoever starts out of camp. If its Hoyer - which seems the more likely - as soon as he throws a couple of INTs or fails to bring the Browns back in a close game, the fans outcry for Manziel will be overwhelming. Give us our future! So they'll bring him in around game 4-6 at the latest and he'll be worse (he may or may not have NFL QB talent, but he almost certainly won't be a decent NFL starter by early this season). Then, when he helps throw away a couple of games, the Hoyer supporting fans will muster a charge about bringing him back ... and if Manziel starts the season and isn't ready/capable, the Hoyer guys will be screaming for the guy who has 'had success' and he'll come in until a couple of losses follow ... either way it will be a huge two-sided argument. In their tough division, I don't see much chance of QB success without Gordon and only Cameron as a stellar receiver. I fear that as losses mount, so will frustration. I don't see a .550 season, but instead lots of QB controversy and dashed hopes.

IMO, the best they can do is something like declare during camp that Manziel is not ready and Hoyer is the starter for the first half of the season and stick to that (and it wouldn't hurt Manziel's cockiness to watch while trying to earn a chance to start). If they do all right, they have something to build on. If not, they will have given Hoyer his chance and can go to Manziel without a huge fan contingent screaming to switch back to Hoyer even if Manziel is worse in his first few apearances.

It's possible for Cleveland to start out close to 6-2. Their schedule is pretty weak for the first half of the season. Their 2nd half is tougher but they could very well be making a playoff push with Hoyer starting. If that happens, will Browns fans clamor for Manziel?

Of course, they could also fall apart without Gordon and an unknown running game.

It depends on the situation. In this case , Manziel just needs to be as good as Hoyer, or maybe even just close.

You see, the current HMFIC have nothing invested in Hoyer and a First round pick invested in Manziel.

Yeah, kind of sucks for Hoyer, but he is who he is, a 5 year journeyman backup with very little playing time to his name.

If the Browns are to hit on their first round pick of Manziel, he Should be able to beat that out for the starters job.

Time will tell.

It will depend on Manziel's learning curve in camp. If he learns fast, is close to Hoyer in execution and has not plateaued by the third preseason game we are sure to see him sooner rather than later.

How many offenses has he had to learn in his college career?

So... Where a player is taken in the draft should be the determining factor when selecting a starter, right? Being taken #22 overall automatically makes you a better QB, right?

What made the difference between #22 (Weedon) and Hoyer last year?

Your last sentence just buttressed my case.Last year, Hoyer was clearly the better QB, yet Weeden got the nod, they had more invested in Weeds and needed to see if it would blossom.

You can hate the process , but it is , what it is.

I suppose, if that's the result you want, that's the criterion you should use.

Clearly Hoyer was superior, last year. He is more experienced reading defenses and his release was WAY superior to Weeden. If JF$ is as good in those categories, he should yield equal or better results. If not, he should wait until he is.

BTW, Weeds was not a rookie last year. He was the incumbent starter.
