While I can see what you are trying for with that link, it's not quite the same thing. By all accounts, Rice didn't just attack his fiance out of nowhere, she hit him. Ray is responsible for his actions but so is she.
Whenever my kids get into a fight I have to tell the older one to stop hitting his brother, but I also have to tell the younger one to stop antagonizing his brother.
All I'm taking from Smith is that women should stop antagonizing their SO when it's getting to a point of violence. It seems like common sense to me.

No. The way I read it didn't let Ray Rice off the hook. It was more of speaking to the problem of people/women not backing down when it is starting to go to far.

Ray Rice should be taking his lumps (per se) for his behavior on its own, independent of what she did. On their own merits:
Her behavior = Absolutely awful, likely even criminal (attempted battery)
His behavior = Multiples worse than her behavior and absolutely criminal
SAS is best to leave out even the slightest hint of cause-and-effect because while things were spiraling out of control, both are ultimately in charge of their behavior.

No, that's not his point. His point is that people can and should protect themselves when possible. And there's nothing wrong with pointing that out.
