FF Magazine Question (1 Viewer)

Thanks to Al Gore's wonderful invention and George W. Bush's promoting of the internets, fantasy football information is everywhere online. Just wondering how many "sharks" still purchase an old standby "ink on paper" fantasy football magazine. And if so,how do you use the information/articles that are in it. Is it just a decent "bathroom read" or do you use it to supplement your other sources?

I like to have a book in front of me with all the players names, and stats from last year (to see trends over the final 4-8 weeks).. helps me make my own predictions, and draft strategies better... i of course use several different online tools on top of that ... especially for sleepers (players to watch for on the waiver wire), players with lots of ???, and finding the best value at each draft position..

on draft day i like to have a lot of paper laid out in front of me with the players that might be available in each round, and my strategy for the draft in front of me so that i feel prepared and don't get anxious and screw up a pick... but i am definitely more of a paper guy and by no means rely on the magazines, but you can always find some useful information to take out of one

I still buy one out of nostalgia but it does very little to shape my FF decisions. I always seem to be travelling in the summer and it's nice to have some light reading while I'm in an airport etc.

At some point I'll stop because I barely touch them by August and they just take up space.

I really find magazines to be garbage, they tend to be a little too outdated for me. I normally read up on a TON of different fantasy sites and projections etc. and make my own predictions on players which I plug into DD. On draft day I bring my laptop with DD on it and my knowledge of who are guys I'm specifically 'targeting' a little higher than DD has them and draft accordingly. I usually also cram hardcore the day before my draft on all 'my guys' just to make sure I'm not missing a situation where a player is hurt or something like that. For example one guy last season in our IDP league drafted Desmond Bishop because of was the #1 IDP player the year prior. Didn't realize he was already on IR and out for most of the year. I don't like missing on stuff like that. The more prepared I can be the better and magazines in my opinion prepare me for more or less nothing.

Every live draft I go to (in 3 different live in person draft leagues) the 2-3 guys in each league (4 different guys total) who still use magazines are in last or second to last every season. Not blaming the magazines completely as clearly part of it is them. But still the data is out of date, I prefer to be as up to date as possible.

Love Fantasy Football Index.

They actually form opinions (right or wrong) and back it up with why.

I buy one or two. Moreso for just some extra reading as others have said, they tend to always be outdated by the time it matters.

I buy one to have on my coffee table. I use the schedules and for some quick reference. I used to buy every single one of them.

Has anybody seen FF Index out on magazine shelves yet this year? In the past I've always found it by the 4th of July but haven't seen it this year.

A buddy of mine said he was told it would be in his bookstore between July 10th and July 14, so it should be in stores any day now......

Pro Football Weekly is out now.

I got ESPN...rankings are booty, but they actually have some good analytics on defensive backs, etc. so you know if you have a favorable match up, etc. I do like FF Index best.

Always pick up one mag for posterity's sake. I put little emphasis on the rankings but do like to read the mocks and rationales for picks.

The mag also comes in handy when you need a quick bye week reference, or a schedule check.

Same here. Grabbed Pro Forecast the other day and there's actually several interesting articles in it this year on subjects from playing "high stakes" games, weekly games and a few others.

I get one more for beach reading than anything else. Its easier to read then a phone. Sure some stuff is outdated but some of the stuff can be useful

For drafts where we are all in the same room I like to bring a 5 year old one to lend out to those who might need help.

I've bought the Index for probably close to 20 years. I don't follow it drafting, but it is always a good read, and always has some very interesting, and well researched, opinions.

Another fan of Index here. I have the PDF version but the print version should be out by now as well.

Honestly, I bought a magazine last-year and it was complete garbage. You're better off looking at the past performs from last year and making hunches who will appear in the Top 10 again for your first 4 - 5 rounds. From there, look for upside guys who will see increased roles (Terrance Williams for example).

But yeah, if I had based my decisions on that magazine it would have been a looooong year.

Years ago I subscribed to Pro Football Weekly. I used to love it. I bought their magazine last summer. It was awful. I read about the first 50 pages and threw it out. The Index is the only mag I will probably buy.

I love Sports Weekly's fantasy football issue and the followup they do which re-ranks the cheat sheets with more current info. I usually buy another that I can reference alternate bios schedule etc.

Bought the PFW mag today. Just doing it to pay homage to tradition. Magazines, these days, are of little use. Will bring to auction just to have bye weeks right in front of me.

I don't know but for some reason there seemed to be less going on in the past month or so of the offseason to make the FF mags out of date.

Once training camp starts, position battles and injuries could make those rankings more obsolete - but if one follows the news from now until the draft that's not really all that big of a deal.

for people like myself who are still living in the dark ages, is there a way to get this for a regular laptop or notebook?

It typically buy one or two per year, and Fantasy Football Pro Forecast is always one of them.

This year, I vacationed before that was available, so I bought ESPN and Lindy's, and followed up with FF Pro Forecast yesterday, when I first saw it on the stand.

I still enjoy them every year. Even with a tablet, I find the mags to be more functional at times. They are very portable. One doesn't have to worry too much about them being stolen at the beach.

Plus, there's the format. There's a reason folks produce PDF copies of magazines. It's a familiar format and folks know their way around it.

Sure, a lot of the information is static as of May. I don't find it too hard to keep that in mind when reading them. They're like a paper early draft of the Audible's Pre-Season Watch List, from others' perspectives.

Long live the mag.

I'm still a big fan of the magazines. I buy Pro Forecast and Fantasy Football Index every year. One of the simple joys of summer is sitting in a hammock or reclining lawn chair on the porch for a few minutes with a fantasy football magazine. :coffee:
