Did a search to see if this topic has been discuss on the FFA ; nothing came up.

 Whatchya got? I have a feeling someone has a good call center story.

I was part of a team that was taking apart an old auto parts warehouse. We were busting up old shelves and such. They gave us those crappy thin medical masks to wear, but it was so sweltering in that old warehouse that nobody wore them. When I got home at night I would blow my nose and the tissue would be black from all the dust and probably asbestos and crap.

I lasted a week before quitting.

poured out the "empty" ink cans in to the recycle ink drum. I would go home everyday covered in ink.

Maintenance at a glass factory;

Job was ok except for scrapping out the tar pits in the dead of summer wearing rubber wadders and a hard hat. The smell was god awful and you would sweat your sack off. Of course, I am sure today there are all kinds of safety regulations that would prohibit you from doing this job wearing anything less than an entire rubber suit and gas mask.

Worked for a few months doing phone surveys. No sales, just surveys. The studies would have a specific market so the available phone numbers were finite and they would need a certain number of responses. Sometimes we'd run out of new numbers to call and we'd have to keep calling all the "refuses". I remember some that refused like 10 times and we'd still have to call them again. People start to get grumpy. I think that was my last crappy part time job.

Busboy. On your feet feet for the entire shift, no breaks, waitstaff was supposed to give us 10% of their tips but stiffed us every time. I lasted 2 weeks, and it was only that long because I loved the food.

Worked in a beef packing plant while going to college. My job was in the "blood isolation" department. Blood isolate was the first station after the cattle were knocked.

The cattle are knocked and pulled up with a chain to a trolley. The "sticker" makes a long vertical cut into the upside down cow's neck, reaches in and cuts the jugular. My job was to then hang a long bucket with spiked dogears into the neck skin to save the blood.

Got kicked in the head and arms several times because the cattle weren't always completely dead. Learned after a while when it was going to happen and that they always kicked with one leg and then the other. Saw a "sticker" almost get knocked out from taking a hoof directly to the face. He had to take a few plays off. Was covered in blood the first few weeks until learning how to keep myself clean.

I miss the job sometimes because it was pretty mindless/low stress and at a time I had very few life responsibilities.

I worked at a bar in Houston. They didn't want to refer to people as busboys because they thought it sounded demeaning. So they called them Server Assistants. Or, S.A. for short. The whole plan kind of backfired once they realized all of the bartenders were calling the Mexicans SA's. "Can you take this back to the dishwasher, ese?"

That's funny. Similar to my worst. I was hired at a paper company (Pen-Tab) and they just got in a used printing machine, the thing was like 50' long and about 10' high. My job was to clean off all the old ink and help assemble it. Every day, I'd come home with my arms completely covered in red ink. No matter what gloves I used or how hard I tried to avoid it. I was using industrial cleaners on my arms to try and get it off. I started getting rashes. I was actually seeing pink in whites for a while after I quit. I think I lasted about 2 weeks.

Worst job had nothing to do with the job itself. Great product to sell, NIGHTMARE CEO. I resigned within 2 months. Unless you are cleaning sewers, it's people that make most jobs suck, not the work itself. That being said, frying taco shells in the summer at Taco Bell when I was 17 wasn't fun. I was a dishwasher at a country club too. They both sucked. But nothing compared to working for an idiot CEO.

Laying tile - we had the job of replacing all the Church's Fried Chicken tile under their chicken holders and fryers. We had to do it after they closed, so we would be there from about 12 AM to 5 AM. It was freaking dirty, greasy, and disgusting.

One day the store we were in didn't even bother to clean the floors at all before they left so they were just really gross. We decided to fire up the fryers and cook nuggets and fries and drink soda. We hung around for a couple hours and left. The dude canned us the next day, but those nuggets were some of the best I've ever had.

Making cold calls for a charity that I think ended up being a scam. If you didn't get something like a donation an hour they would send you home. I didn't last long.

i worked at a farm where i ran a bobcat to scoop up cow manure in a fenced in area they ran the cows into before they brought them in to the barn and the crap got so thick that was the best way to get it out of there that was not a lot of fun and i also washed parts in a tool and die shop in a wash tank and every day even if you wore the gloves they gave you my arms were all red and swollen up from the solvent that was a doosie but you have to do what you have to do to keep food on the table and the mortgage paid that to the bank brohans

Busser at a mexican restaurant. I made $3.85 an hour. Worked some 11 hour shifts without even a 10 minute break. The distance from the bus room to the kitchen had to be 30 yards. I lost 15lbs. One night they needed a server for a big party so I waited tables and the ##### manager wouldn't give me a portion of the tips because I was a busser. She took my share for herself. Thank god it was only for a few months.

Roofing. Worst job ever. Work was hot and nasty.
Ugh. I was a plumber's helper for a few years. Just the small amount of roofing we had to do when we'd bring a vent stack through a roof was enough to realize how horrible a job that is.

Mine was graveyard shift answering service. The majrity of the calls were inmates looking for bailsbonds. I would love the job now but at 18 it was a large dose of reality.

hey brohans i have done that to the worst is shake roofs because it is like heres a bee there is a bee everywhere is a bee or wasp you pretty much just bathed in bee and wasp spray and hoped they did not sting you in the eye but on the plus side it was like working out all day and you got pretty healthy doing it take that to the bank

I worked overnight weekend shifts for an alarm monitoring company that doubled as an answering service. First few months were great, since the girl I worked with just wanted to study so she would let me sleep so I wouldn't talk to her.

Medical bill collections. Required to berate, question peoples' character, and threaten in order to get bill (or part of a bill) paid. There were two gals there in their late 20s, maybe the two biggest beatches I've ever met. They were by far the most successful collectors in the company. I made it about 2 months and then quit.

QuikTrip conv store. I still have nightmares from working for that company.
Care to elaborate? QuikTrip is the finest convenience store/gas station I've ever been to. Clean store, huge drink selection, clean cheap fuel, courteous employees who always seem to be in a good mood and in a hurry to check people out. I've even heard the pay is good for that line of work. What is the insider's perspective?

This was exactly my worst job except I had to go door to door. Walked around getting doors slammed in my face, not making any money, and then would go get yelled at back at headquarters. I quit after a week after I lost it because someone had the nerve to think eating dinner with their family was more important than listening to my stupid spiel about cleaning up hazardous waste. I'm pretty sure they were firing me that day if I hadn't quit.

:goodposting: my worst working experiences were my two highest paying, it had everything to do with the negative work environment.

Dude, you got to drive a Bobcat!

Paper factory in the summer - Stacker. Stood at end of the line, would have to shuffle the stacks so they'd line up, and move them to a palette. Rinse and repeat over and over again for 8 hours on the night shift. It was a summer job, and then I'd go from there to an internship. It sucked and was hot as hell and stunk all of the time. But it paid double my previous summer job so I sucked it up. Worst part were paper jams on these huge machines. We have to reach our hands in and pull this #### out. I had my hand in there and the idiot operator turned the machine back on. Luckily my reflexes saved my fingers. Ran into one guy I worked there with a year later. Asked him if he was still working there. He held up his hand sans thumb and said no.

There was also a small explosion/fire one time when some paint fell into a machine. That was fun.

But, it made me appreciate the office job I have now a little more.

brohan trust me driving that baby was pretty sweet but hey when you are using it like a glorified honey wagon it sort of takes a little bit of the shine off if you know what i mean take that to the bank brohan

Corn detastling. You just walk down row after row of corn pulling off the tops. I mean WTF dont they make machines that do this? Back in the day it was all young kids. I suppose I was 13 or 14. I only lasted a few weeks.

Fluffer

Not THAT fluffer, you jerks.

I ran out of money my sophomore year of college entering second semester. Dad said he'd help me and match what I earned, but to get off the couch and get a job over break. Only job I could get was at Strawbridges. Literally, the job entailed folding clothes after people threw them everywhere while shopping during Christmas season and return season. 10 hour shifts. I worked with felons on work release...no background checks required to do this. I had a "Big gulps, huh? See you later!" moment during a best rapper discussion.

Worst job I ever had.

This was the pretext for an awesome thread on this board back in the day. I'm not completely sure who started it, but I want to say it was Shiny. RIP

Refridgerator assembly line worker. I hung the doors. 2 brackets, 4 bolts; repeat 240 times, break, repeat 240 times, lunch, repeat 240 times, break, repeat 240 times, punch out. I lasted 44 days.

Union Steward, 44th Day: "Congratulations! Tomorrow is your 45th workday, and you'll be joining the brotherhood of the Union."

 Not if I get stoned at lunch and never come back.

"Hahahaha. Good one! You're gonna fit right in."

:hey:

I walked out and joined the Navy. A year later the factory (which built my hometown and was there 100 years - started out making ice boxes, made D-Day gliders during WWII) sold to a Swedish conglomerate. They moved the plant to Mexico and took the soul of the town with them.

Haha. I thought detasseling was awesome.

Wasn't my job - I didn't get paid to do chores - but in h.s. I shoveled #### every week for six horses. By hand, pitchfork & shovel, pickax in the winter when the piss froze solid. Bobcat would have been a sweet gig.

Oh, picking rock. Literally walking behind a tractor with a tailor picking rocks out of a field. $5 cash at 14 years old. No W2, certainly no workers comp.

When I worked for them (late 80's) they had a program called "suggestive selling". Basically someone comes to the counter with a soda and you ask "candy bar or anything else for you?" That is no longer a requirement I have heard. I didnt do it when I worked there because it just pissed off the customers. One time I was working a shift with a young go-getter who literally suggestive sold every single customer he waited on. He noticed that I wasnt doing that and he asked me about it. I simply asked him how often did the suggestive sell tactic work for you tonight? Of course he had to tell me not once. I said that's one reason I dont do it, end of conversation. I never saw it work even one time in the 3 years I worked there. I saw it piss alot of people off though. They had 7 contacts you had to make with every customer and they would mystery shop you all the time and you would get graded on them. Our customers were "Q's", the register would keep track of your Q's for every shift. I worked many shifts with over 1,000 Q's, I'm talikng 100's of them. In those days everything was rung up on the register and you had to actually know how to count change back. We didnt have these scanners that ring up the price. You had to be extremely fast and accurate.

When I worked for the company you started off on 3rd shift, 6 nights a week. The 3rd shift person is responsible for getting the store ready for the next day and you had to run your ### off to get it done. Actually QT has what is known as a workplan for every single shift. This workplan would be difficult to get done if the store was locked, no customers. Back in those days there were no cameras, no door alarms, etc. If the cooler needed stocked you had to run in and stock it bit by bit. You were the only one in the store. I worked in a town with a major university and those stores were very busy, even at night. It was absolutely brutal trying to get your work done, keep the store "up", and deal with the customers. I could go on and on about it. The pay was only good because you worked at least 10 hours of overtime every week. Now I know some people will say that's not alot, but you really ran your ### off to accomplish what you were required to do. Believe me, the company got their money's worth from me anyway.

It may be different now but the way it was when I worked there I would never do it again.
