Brown Story

Having drafted LenDale White and re-signed Travis Henry, Tennessee Titans general manager Floyd Reese may trade first-string running back Chris Brown – or allow him to seek a deal with teams in need of backs with starting experience – according to a source close to Brown.

Brown is in his last year of his contract, so any trade could require that the new team come to an agreement on a new, long-term deal. Reese has not given Brown permission to pursue trades, but Brown would be an excellent target for teams looking for an experienced back, such as the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans.

A league source said that the Broncos have been associated with another veteran running back – T.J. Duckett of the Atlanta Falcons – as part of a potential three-team trade. The deal would also send Broncos wide receiver Ashley Lelie to the New England Patriots and Patriots tight end Daniel Graham to the Falcons, who could also receive a draft choice.

Both Denver and Houston will run offensive schemes that could entice a runner like Brown, who is a straight-head guy with the ability to make one cut and go.

In his three NFL seasons, Brown has averaged 4.3 yards per carry on 500 career attempts, including a career-high 1,067 yards and 4.9 average in 2004. He also had success against his only AFC West foe last season, gaining 97 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries against the Oakland Raiders, while also rushing for 267 yards in five career contests against the Texans.

After finishing 4-12 in 2005, the Titans could use significant assistance elsewhere on the roster. Given that offensive coordinator Norm Chow is very familiar with White from their days at USC – and given that Henry is capable of providing an adequate backup at the position if he can stay out of trouble – it might make sense for Tennessee to trade Brown to increase its depth and skill level at another position, and/or possibly supplement its 2007 draft picks.

Brown was drafted in the third round of the 2003 NFL draft. Last year, he finished with 851 rushing yards on a Titans team that struggled to run the ball and often found itself trailing early in games and abandoning the running attack.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Chicago native played his college ball at Colorado, where he led the nation in rushing during his senior year. He has missed some time in the NFL due to a variety of minor injuries, including turf toe, but he reported to the Tennessee's first minicamp at 100 percent. Brown is regarded in league circles as a high-upside back that could thrive in a system that uses his size and speed in a more run-oriented offense.

Not that any trade is not possible, but what experience does Brown have more than the backs in Houston and Denver? Dayne has been in the league longer, DD has been in the league for the same 3 years and Bell has been in the league for 2 years. I love articles like this where they highlight someone's supposed strength without even looking at the places they mention.

If Chris Brown stayed healthy for an entire season he would put up some big numbers (especially yardage wise). Unfortunately he is going through what Fragile Fred Taylor went through early in his career (and is still going through). The guy is as injury prone as it gets, and part of the problem is his stand-up running style. If he's still with the Titans there is no reason not to draft him as your RB3, because if he plays in 14 games the gamble will have paid off big time.

If White is indeed healthywhen mandatory minicamps start, I would expect Brown to be traded.

His running style is PERFECT for Denver.

Just to play devil's advocate, plenty of players have been rumored to be on the trade market, but obviously deals are pretty infrequent.

Just sounds like another example.

Just throwing this out there, but I would actually think they'd be more prone to keep Brown and huck Crazy Travis Henry. He hasn't exactly ingratiated himself to the team.

Of course, there might be more takers for Brown than Henry.

This article assumes Lendale White can be counted on. That is a big assumption considering all that has happened in the last 5 months and the fact that he hasn't been able to participate in mini-camps with the bad hammy.

IBT

On the report:

(1) The info comes from a "source close to Brown" which tells me this is something he wants, and not necessarily something the Titans are seriously looking into. Maybe he fears losing touches to White in season that he's trying to earn a new contract.

(2) I would think the combo of Brown/White would be more to Chow's offensive philosophy than Henry/White.

Titans dont have future plans for Brown, whos contract expires after the season. Henry's contract is for the bare minimum, and runs past this season.Brown is the one who will leave.

Could be trying to free up a little more cap space to sign Ty Law. As a side note, I do not know why people are down on Lendale. So he didnt handle the combine and inury as well as he could have, big deal. I think Chow and Fisher (with his USC ties) have a pretty good read on Lendale and I think they expect him to be their Eddie George in this new era. I think Lendale will be a stud.

Henry moved his 4M bonus to next year - so he is eaily gone...
I dont recall him moving his bonus, do you have a link to that?My recollection was he accepted a restructured deal with base salaries and incentives, but no bonus money.

Titans, Henry reach restructured deal JIM WYATT

3/2/2006

The Titans agreed to terms on a restructured contract for running back Travis Henry last night, according to the player's agent.

The Titans avoided paying the $4 million option Henry was scheduled to collect as the veteran agreed to a multiyear, incentive-laden deal.

Henry rushed for 335 yards in his first season with the Titans, who traded a third-round pick to the Buffalo Bills for the former University of Tennessee star.

"Travis is bending over backwards to make this work because he really believes in the Titans," agent Hadley Engelhard said. "Based on what happened last year he wants to show the Titans what he is all about."

Henry missed six games last season, including a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Actually I would say it assumes that White and/or Henry can be counted on. I would happen to agree with that stance.

Yahoo also reporting a possible Lelie-Duckett-Graham deal.

Is this typical that yahoo has a staff that just dreams up this stuff to have something to write about?

Actually, it's the same writer and the same article. My first reaction was "who is this guy" although he does cite a source close to Brown so who the heck knows.
