2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints

Player Page Link: Drew Brees Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

Brees will be a question mark this season coming off the rotator cuff injury. That said, he has really performed well the last few years. He seems to have all the intangibles to make him a top tier QB. New Orleans has averaged about 3650 passing yards and around 23 Td's the last four years and I can see those type of numbers again this year. Brees will be a top 10-15 QB with some upside if he can play 16 games.

3650 yards - 22 TD - 16 INT 80 rush yards 1 TD

Bree really shouldn't fall through the cracks here...he's a Pro Bowl caliber QB who has changed teams. Furthermore he's got an uncertain injury situation and is really playing on a one-year deal. Offensively, the Saints are chock full of weapons but it's uncertain a) how healthy Deuce will be, b) whether Horn merely had an off 2005 (versus succumbing to the inevitable age decline) and c) whether Stallworth fits into the teams plans and has another leg of growth in front of him. Lastly, but as important, the Saints have a new coaching staff in place.

There is so much uncertainty for Brees (coaches, system, health, offensive cast) I really don't think current ADP or projections reflect the amount of risk involved in projecting his 2006 output.

I agree, Jason. My projections are usually based on the player being and remaining healthy. I also consider their place in the respective system. Brees, if healthy will take nearly all the snaps for the Saints. Now, I do go back later in training camp and update my projections based on updated health information, and changes based on camp performance.

My projections for Brees are based on him being healthy, Horn rebounding, Stallworth progressing a bit and solid play from Zach Hilton and the RB group. These numbers may or may not drop when I do my camp updates.

What they have averaged probably isn't relevant, given new coaching staff, new QB (who is coming off injury), and the new RB situation (one RB coming off injury and the addition of Bush). You're projecting Brees for a career high in yards despite all this uncertainty.

I would have agreed with WIE's logic (despite the obvious flaw) until I read that bit about 3650 being Brees' highest yardage. It seems to me that 3150/22/16 seems a more likely projection... but I am not likely to draft Brees/Horn/Stallworth under any circumstances...

Zach Hilton though.... have to wonder if Brees has developed a habit of throwing to his TE..... could be a sleeper steal for like 700/8 :banned:

The offensive line is a mess in New Orleans. They lost their only Pro Bowler in LeCharles Bentley in the offseason, and traded their veteran LT Wayne Gandy for a safety. With the exception of Jammal Brown, who was just arrested for beating his wife, the Saints have no other solid starters on the line. IMO Drew Brees is going to find out first hand why QBs in New Orleans have never had any consistent success in the 40 year history.

see, and this is the problem. Brees and Co. have such a distant high/low it's really hard to guage an accurate value.IMO, this is just as easy to believe as 3k/20/10, and I can't stand picking players with that many question marks.
