Zoo York
2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: L.J. Smith, TE, Philadelphia Eagles

Player Page Link: L.J. Smith Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

No TO, Brown is still young and a weak receiving corp. I predict 680/6 and this is considering McNabb plays 12 games or less. These numbers could improve if McNabb stays healthy for 16 games and if Westbrook is injured.

Bump for discussion.

LJ Has to be viewed as the 2nd option of a pass catcher for 2006.

Brown - LJ - Westy.

The Eagles average 200+ a game passing, so that's a lot of yards to distribute.

I'll defer my predictions for the Spotlight, but I'd like to hear from others.

I beleive the Eagles recieving corps is being underestimated, but either way, L.J. is comfortable in the offense now, and has obvious skills. For those leagues that demand you start a TE, he's a TE1 easily.

63/755/6

Everyone has him having a worse year than last year's disaster where his production was murdered by Mike McMahon? No way.

70/790/8

Career year, if healthy.

And this quote from Jeff's Player Spotlight post on Reggie Brown.
McNabb averages over 200 yards passing a game for the past 6 seasons. That's 3200+ yards passing at a minimum this year, assuming 16 starts.

Who will he throw to?

Reggie, LJ Smith and Westy seem the logical choices.

Westy hasn't broken 750 yards receiving, ever. LJ hasn't broken 700.

Give them both career years at 800 each, and 50% is still missing, or 1600 yards, at a minimum.
Firstly, Projection - 78/875/7LJ finds himself in the perfect equation for TE success. Dynamic QB + limited WR corps = TE success... or lots of INT's (not likely).

I know the jury's still out on the WR's, but Jeff's post is very telling... the ball is gonna go somewhere with McNabb under center. I feel that LJ will be a possesion reciever for them this year. Lots of check downs and outright reads, it will be hard to predict how things will be spread, but LJ should be in the mix BIG TIME. He and Westy will see personal bests this year,IMO.

He's definately got he tools. He's got the opportunity. FF success? IF he can stay healthy!

:football:

I think LJ is going to put up some decent numbers, his biggest problem has ben either staying healthy or being consistent. He was on his way in the first half but once McMahon was on board his numbers drastically went south. Given they stay healthy, with options like Brown and Westy and Gaffney who is coming off a 50+ catch season where thier QB hit the turf 90 times.

I can see LJ getting 65 catches 700yds and 6 TD's

Does anybody think with Owens and his ability to stretch the field gone that Smith will be somewhat adversely affected?

But on the other hand with Owens and his red zone prowess gone that Smith will be somewhat positively affected?

I don't think TO's departure will hurt LJ at all. Take a look at his career numbers, which admittedly provide but a small sample size:
+-------------------------+ | Receiving |+----------+-----+-------------------------+| Year TM | G | Rec Yards Y/R TD |+----------+-----+-------------------------+| 2003 phi | 15 | 27 321 11.9 1 || 2004 phi | 16 | 34 377 11.1 5 || 2005 phi | 16 | 61 682 11.2 3 |+----------+-----+-------------------------+| TOTAL | 47 | 122 1380 11.3 9 |+----------+-----+-------------------------+His highest ypc was in his rookie year, without TO. What's going to happen in Philly IMHO is that McNabb's numbers will slip, particularly in TD's and ypa, and probably yardage too, but the WR's (who are still there) will actually experience an uptick in their numbers. LJ, too, will see more passes.

TO always seems to put up his numbers at the expense of other WR's around him. In fact, only once has a WR gotten 1000+ yards receiving opposite TO when he got 1000 yards in a season, and that was in 1998 with a veteran 49'ers team and Jerry Rice opposite of him.

I'd project LJ at something like:

70/805/7.

I think he's going to be very valuable this year.

LJ is in for a career year unless Mcnabb gets hurt. I see him and Westy as the 1st pass options and will option #1 in the erdzone when pasing. 75/825/7
