2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Steve McNair, QB, Baltimore Ravens

Player Page Link: Steve McNair Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

Kyle Boller's going to take them to the division title this year

Projection: 3350 yards 20 TD's 17 INT's if he plays 16 games

McNair is the piece of the puzzle that will complete the picture in Baltimore. He has the ability to control the field and is a tough leader (when healthy). He's being reunited with Mason, has a stud TE and WR's that could make some noise with a "proven passer" in the pocket. It will interesting to see if he can fully embrace their playbook this year.

That being said, I don't think McNair will blow peoples doors off this year. He's going from playing HOU, IND, and JAX twice a year to facing CIN, CLE, and PIT twice. Offensively there's going to be a much different focus than in TEN and defensively there will be new sets and personel for him to compete against. Is he ready for it?

IMO, Baltimore's defense will put him in better postions to create opportunities for his recieving corps. While they will run the hell out of the ball, I see him adding a deep ball / red zone passing threat that will guarantee the Ravens their best QB stats in a VERY long time. If he stays healthy...

I, for one, am definately going to be glued to his week 10 matchup @ TEN!

Did anyone mention the pass blocking of the Ravens Oline, McNair's tendency to take big hits, and hes not getting any younger?

I feel that McNair's numbers will be solid, but not spectacular for Baltimore. Huge numbers are not what he'll be asked to bring to the team, but instead it will be his leadership, crafty play, and good decision making.

Pass Yds: 3225

Pass TDs: 18

Pass INTs: 13

Rush Yds: 150

Rush TDs: 1

McNair has had only one 16 game season since 2000 and that was in 2002. I think that he will also show some growing pains switching to the new system. I don't see the upside that I am hearing on the board.

237 completion in 395 attempts for 2950 yards with 16 TDs and 12 Ints. Add 85 rushing yards and one TD.

he used to play these teams when Tenn was previously in the AFC Central, before realignment, so thats not a cause for concern, if anything else, it should be great news, I mean, does Cincy's defense scare anyone? how about Cleveland? Pitt has always had a tough defense, and McNair is used to that by now, I'm sure..Cincy, despite ranking first in ints in 2005, ranked 25th in completions, 26th in passing yards allowed, 29th in ypa, 21st in passing tds, 27th in ypa rushing, 24th in rushing tds..a very ordinary defense, if you ask me..

I think McNair can play well vs any defense, especially the ones in the AFC North..

With games against great ( sarcasm) defenses such as Oakland, Cleveland (2X), New Orleans, Tenn, ATL, KC, Cincy (2X), Buffalo, I think McNair will do just fine!

Billick can finally open up his offense and let the QB throw the ball, something he hasn't been able to do since he left Minnesota and took over the Ravens HC spot..

with his job on the line, I'd expect Billick to throw everything AND the kitchen sink at opponents in 2006, as both he and Fassell will be fired if they fail to make the playoffs...

McNair has alot of talent around him, and with questions at the RB position, he might be throwing even more than originally thought..

this could be a pro bowl season for him.

I tend to agree with you here. The other factor to consider is the once-vaunted Ravens defense appears to not be so formidable anymore. They might have to put up some points, as opposed to previous years when they just could let their defense win/keep them in games.

The worst pass protecting team in the NFL (Houston) yields a sack every 6 passing plays. The best yields a sack every 25 attempts (Indy). Baltimore yields a Sack every 13....it is practically tied at 20th amongst the leagues OLs in that category. The good thing here is that I expect them to continue to want to run the ball amost half the time and that McNair is also much more decisive and should get the ball out of his hands faster than Boller would. Assuming 16 games played (which I grant you would be an achievement in and of itself), I projected McNair at: 327/510-3315-19-13
