The Falcons, who have led the league in rushing each of the last two seasons, hope they have better balance on offense. Quarterback Michael Vick has had more time to become comfortable with receivers Roddy White and Michael Jenkins, first-round picks in 2005 and 2004, respectively.

White had only five catches in the first seven games last season, but he finished strong with 19 receptions in the last seven games.

White continued that momentum with a sometimes dominant showing in minicamp, benefiting from the additional practice passes from Vick while tight end Alge Crumpler recovered from offseason knee and shoulder surgeries.

"I'm prepping myself to have a breakout year, and I'm doing everything I can to be ready to do that," White said.

Two of White's three touchdown catches in his rookie season came in the last four games.

"I think Mike likes throwing to him," Mora said. "What the great receivers do is they go get the football. Roddy has that ability. He doesn't just wait for it to come down in his hands. Mike can throw it up there. He can say 'I know Roddy will go get it.'"

mixed feelings on Roddy this year. i think he ends up the #1 WR in Atlanta, but he doesn't have much upside in that system.

 
Most underrated WR in dynasty formats. Would take him over quite a number of the 30-45 FBG ranked WR's. Best part is I'll get him later.

Let's prepare for the "He won't do anything with Mike Vick at QB" posts. Roddy can get open underneath and up top (a weapon Mike's never had/we all know Mike can launch it downfield).

well then coach let him say itI didn't get to see the Falcs all that often but Jenkins impressed me more last year than Roddy.

 
Roddy is the best WR Vick has ever had to throw to. I think this is the year that Vick is more underrated than overrated, contrary to the past few years.

That strong finish in the last seven games is still less than 3 receptions per game. There is the problem. That said...........you're not risking much when you take him in the 12th round or even later.

Until Vick proves otherwise, that's a sound line of thinking. Vick has been the primary QB for ATL in 2002, 04-05. In those three season the #1 WR has averaged 50-675-4.
 
He won't do squat with Vick at QB and with Dunn and Duckett in the backfield. If White was on any other team, he'd be one of my top young WRs but at this point I think Mark Bradley is a better option than him.

 
The classic "Is it the QB that sucks, or the WRs that suck causing the QB to suck?" scenario.

On one hand, Vick hasn't thrown much at all, especially to the WRs. On the other hand, the WRs he's had to throw to have been pretty awful. Some comparisons that come to mind are Kordell Stewart and Steve McNair, each of whom have had some lackluster passing years in which they've had horrible WRs, and some good passing years.

OK, maybe not in Kordell's case, but he had a good year in 2001 with 60.2%, 7.0 YPA, and 3109 passing yds - all career highs. Not coincidentally, Hines Ward and Plaxico Burress both played well and had over 1000 yds. In Kordell's 2nd best year (1997), Yancy Thigpen had his career year. In between 97 and 01, the Steeler WRs were terrible as Ward and Burress hadn't developed yet.

McNair is tougher to pinpoint, but he really came on in 2000 and 2001 as a passer, and continued through the current times as a solid passing QB. Not surprisingly, Derrick Mason's first good season was 2000, and his first great season was 2001.

Often, we forget that with little talent at WR, a QB's numbers can be severely impacted. Looking over ATL's WR talent, you have to laugh at how bad it's been. Sure, Crumpler and Dunn are good, but the WRs have sucked. With better WR play from Roddy White, Vick's numbers could certainly improve. Jenkins may fit the #2 WR role better, and Crumpler is still a great target. Don't limit White because you think Vick sucks. If White has the talent, Vick will get him the ball. Will White be a top 20 WR? Doubtful. But don't knock him just because the garbage WRs ATL has had over the past 3 or 4 years didn't produce.

 
Roddy will be a decent value where he can be had this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see him hit about 750 yards and 5-6 TDs, which probably can be called a "breakout" in Atlanta. I'm not expecting any Pro Bowl-type numbers, for sure.

The Falcons also have an UGLY December schedule this year, so I wouldn't want to go into the end of the season counting on him as a starter for me. At Washington, at Tampa Bay, Dallas, Carolina, at Philadelphia.

 
Roddy in Indy would equal Pro Bowl numbers.
That could be said for practically any marginally talented WR. Crumpler is their #1 WR and if ATL can help it, they'll be throwing as little as possible. I'll pass.
I wouldn't say "marginal", but yeah, a lot of WRs could step into Indy and have great numbers.

Who here thinks Finneran will catch 50 again? I don't. In 2004, he was the #3 receiver with 23 catches, though he did also miss 4 games.Consider targets. Clearly he was raw last season, and has potential for significant improvement this season. That could lead both to catching more of his targets and to being targeted more frequently.I could easily see White adding one catch per game, even if WR catches don't increase. That would leave Jenkins & Finneran to split the the other 70 from this trio last year. This would push him to 45 catches. If he maintains his ypc and TD % averages, that would give him a statline like this: 45/693/5Last year, that would have ranked as WR37. I think that qualifies as sleeper material... FBG says his current ADP is WR57.Now, is that the ceiling, either for White or this passing game? No. Add 50 more plays as was discussed earlier and call 20 of them passing plays, which would give Atlanta 471 passing attempts. WRs have caught ~26% of Atlanta's passes over the past two years, so that means a few more catches for the WRs. If White is the leading receiver, that could give him a few more catches.More importantly, is it possible for the WRs to get more passes this season? I think so. In 2002, Vick's best passing year, WRs caught 28.6% of Atlanta's 479 passing attempts. Entering his third year with the same coaching staff & offense, I could see Vick's confidence as improved, plus he is healthy unlike last year. So I could see him looking downfield more. If the WRs could catch 28.6% of 471 passes instead of 26%, that is 135 catches for the WRs, 17 more than last year. Again assuming White is the #1, or at least co-#1, that could be 7-10 more catches for him over the numbers I showed earlier. That could get him to 55/847/6... WR28 last year.Finally, consider his splits from last season:First 8 games: 8/94/0 receiving, with 23 targetsLast 8 games: 21/352/3, with 45 targetsIf he was able to carry his second half performance forward to this year and maintain it all season, that would be 90 targets and 42/704/6, which last season would have ranked as WR35.Looks to me like there is a reasonable chance for White to end up in the WR30-W40 range, and he is currently being drafted far below that. Hence, he would seem to be a good value.
The latest ADP posted at FBG shows him at WR53--very good value there.Also, it is worth noting that, while the average performance of Vick's WR1 hasn't been good, as posted previously in this thread, Finneran posted 56/838/6 and was WR31 in 2002. Not coincidentally, that season was Vick's career high in passing attempts. If his passing attempts go up this year, White could have a surprisingly good year.There are certainly those who have written off Vick and decided he simply isn't capable of improving as a passer. Those people will tend to ignore White. But anyone who thinks Vick still has potential to improve his passing, like I do, should be targeting White.
