GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers released former starting safety Mark Roman on Thursday, one day before the team reports to training camp.

Roman said during a May minicamp that he was unhappy that Packers management didn't consult with him before signing free-agent safety Marquand Manuel away from the Seattle Seahawks in the offseason.

But Roman said at the time that he was willing to compete for the job that used to be his.

"I'm happy to be here, I'm happy to be in Green Bay, I'm happy to be a Packer," Roman said in May. "And all I'm doing now is just playing football. That's all I'm focusing on right now."

Roman signed with the Packers as an unrestricted free agent from Cincinnati before the 2004 season.

wonder if he'll be able to get a starting job somewhere else. heck, Seattle could probably use him as a backup.

Truthfully, I was never impressed with him while he was in GB. Not sure if it's the scheme up there or Roman himself. I'm interested to see where he winds up...

Manuel a nice pickup? No competition for the job now and Roman put up decent numbers last year, especially from a tackle standpoint.

He may make for nice depth. I still believe Collins is the player to have in the Packer secondary. It'll be interesting to see what impact Hawk has on the tackle stats, but Collins out-tackled Roman 45-32 over the second half of last season. Collins will almost certainly put up significantly more coverage stats as well. One of many trends to keep an eye on during the first couple weeks of the season.

49ers | Roman agrees to a contractFri, 28 Jul 2006 23:13:33 -0700ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to an undisclosed contract with free agent S Mark Roman (Packers). Since he also has started at free safety in the past, there is a chance Roman could challenge S Mike Adams for the starting job there. Roman can also be insurance for injured SS Tony Parrish, who is still recovering from a broken left leg.

Stop, rewind.

49ers | Nolan says team has not signed Roman yetSat, 29 Jul 2006 22:53:19 -0700SF49ers.com reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said the team has not yet signed S Mark Roman, despite published reports they had. "He may have talked about leaving Green Bay, but not everyone knew that he was going to be released. Even with our connection with Green Bay, it was a surprise when it happened. We'll wait and see how it goes. Again, we're just in discussion, it's nothing serious. I'm doing some of my homework at this time and so is Scot McCloughan. We certainly know a lot in certain areas but not in all of them because again, it was a surprise. I know there are several people talking to him as well so we'll see what transpires," said Nolan.
