Hey Cecil, is there any way to make a weekly podcast of the latest happenings in broncos camp?
Good idea. I will be taking audio notes...
 cool!I figured it could be something done maybe once or twice a week, just covering various camp stuff like, who's running with the first team, how many reps X player is getting etc....

As a Broncos fan, I always find its fun to make a few pre-camp predictions:

1) I think RBBC is currently a more viable (and more likely) option than any FFer would ever hope. That said, I think Bell will be much more productive with marginally fewer touches than Dayne. Nothing really mind-boggling here, of course.

2) Sounds like Shanahan is ready to move on without Ashley Lelie. I'm sure its coachspeak and what-not, but the reports of the Broncos going after Thomas Jones, coupled with TJ's hammy tweak at his physical yesterday morning (and Benson looking really good), and I think we're close to a Denver/Chicago mini-blockbuster.

3) Darius Watts and Brandon Marshall as WR3/WR4 will be solid.

4) Shanahan will let the QBs "compete" during camp, with the obvious guarantee that The Snake will be the starter for the foreseeable future. That said, I think Van Pelt will hold off Culter at QB2 for most, if not all, of the season.

5) One more incident of any kind with Sauerbrun and he's gone. It's clear the Broncos could always scoop up Knorr again, unless he goes absolutely nuts and gets picked up by another squad after Week 5. Shanahan was clearly infuriated with Todd's suspension (and cause for said suspension), and seemed geniunely confused about why a punter would need to take a weight-loss supplement.

6) The Browncos DL will continue to gel and be more productive than last year, meaning they'll be 300% more productive then they were at Cleveland.

No real revelations, just wanted to post some thoughts. Plus I felt a little guilty just popping in a :blackdot: .

Looking forward to the updates, Cecil. As a Virginia born-and-bred (and fed) Broncos fan, I'm envious of anyone that is close enough to make it to camp at Dove Valley. Enjoy.

just got home from Dove Valley. I have to write the TC report and send it to Joe. I will post snippets here.

Here's a pic of Cutler. Enjoy!

Day one snippets:

Jay Cutler looked like a rookie today. He threw a pick to a defensive lineman (Demetrin Veal), and seemed to be very nervous. He was double-clutching his throws and seemed to be trying to “aim” his passes, rather than throw them.

In the afternoon he was running with the first team and had more trouble reading his blocks. The Denver system is made for cut-back running, and Bell likes to either hit the hole, or if the hole is not there, break it to the outside. (Tatum Bell snip)

Brandon Marshall did something I’ve never seen him do. He “alligator armed” a pass. That was his only mistake from today’s training camp. He is very big, and although he’s not a burner, he does have very good quickness. I like the way he’s running routes.

Be sure to check out the newsletter for the complete report!

It was a BIG first day. I will be there every day giving you the inside scoop!

The Denver system is made for cut-back running, and Bell likes to either hit the hole, or if the hole is not there, break it to the outside.  (Tatum Bell snip)
And yet Ted Sundquist, THE GENERAL MANAGER, had this to say about Tatum Bell:"No question about it -- he's got big-play, breakaway speed. He's got the vision and understands the cutback lanes, that sort of thing."

--Ted Sundquist 7/26/06

I'm inclined to believe the GM.

He may understand cutback lanes, but his instinct is to break everything outside. :2cents:

I'll be at Broncos TC on Sunday. Should I steal Lammey's wallet?
Don't bother, he spent all his money getting his press pass altered. Somehow he has access to the cheerleaders locker room.

here's the full day 1 report:

Broncos Training Camp Report

By Cecil Lammey

7/28/06

The fans were lined up to get into training camp, and the Broncos did not disappoint. They put on a great show, and there were several “ooohs” and “aaaahhhs” heard all day long. Let’s get right to it.

Jake Plummer looked really good today. He was hitting his receivers in stride, and had great zip on the ball. He moved around well behind the line of scrimmage and set up well in nearly all of his throws. Jake had a smile on his face, and seemed very comfortable controlling the offense.

Jay Cutler looked like a rookie today. He threw a pick to a defensive lineman (Demetrin Veal), and seemed to be very nervous. He was double-clutching his throws and seemed to be trying to “aim” his passes, rather than throw them. Cutler had this to say after morning practice: “The intensity is definitely at another level. People are running around a little bit faster and things are moving. I definitely think the notch has been turned up.” He did not put enough pepper on many of his passes, and was throwing very tentatively. It seems he was trying to not make mistakes, more than just play football. He overthrew receivers a couple of times, and generally his timing was off. He is a rookie, and this was his first day, so this doesn’t overly concern me. He too moved well behind the line of scrimmage, and his physical tools are clearly evident. Coach Shanahan had this to say about Cutler: “Well, it’s really not his first day. It’s about his 18th day. He’s getting used to the system and feeling more comfortable with it. There’s a big learning curve there, and it’s going to take a long time. But I’m pleased with the progress that he’s made and the effort that he’s given.”

Bradlee Van Pelt was busted in the mouth today. Rookie Antwan Burton jumped off-sides and continued with the play. He basically slammed Van Pelt to the ground. Mike Shanahan was extremely upset, but assured the media that it wouldn’t happen again. That was the highlight for Van Pelt. It doesn’t seem like he’s improved much as a player, and looked very much the same. He had a better afternoon practice, throwing a TD to Todd Devoe, but he was still forcing the ball into double coverage all the time.

Preston Parsons looked okay. Probably won’t make the team, but I thought he looked better than Van Pelt.

Ron Dayne was actually the most impressive RB in the morning practice. In the afternoon, not so much. He fumbled the ball away, and seemed to be really affected by the heat. He did run with the first team in the morning, and did a solid job. He was making plenty of noise in the morning drills. I like his body control, although he was stumbling a bit running through trash at the line. He showed much more acceleration than he did last season, and looked like he was trying to make the most of his opportunity.

Tatum Bell is fast. That is about the best thing I can say about him. In the morning drills he kept trying to break every run outside. It seemed like his initial read was to break out. There were times when I thought he would be best served cutting back, yet there was Tatum, still trying to get to the corner. His hands seem a little improved although he still had some drops. In the afternoon he was running with the first team and had more trouble reading his blocks. The Denver system is made for cut-back running, and Bell likes to either hit the hole, or if the hole is not there, break it to the outside. It was just the first day, but it seemed like business as usual at the RB position.

Cedric Cobbs looked like he was still running with the scout team. He seemed out of shape, and did not show much patience or balance when running drills.

Mike Bell is clearly in over his head in the NFL. He looked lost behind the line of scrimmage, and had a ball stripped from him.

Cecil Sapp is currently the first team fullback. He dropped some passes that he should’ve caught in drills. He won’t remain the starter if he keeps that up.

Kyle Johnson is solid. He seems to be working hard to get his starting position back. He caught several passes today, even some poorly thrown ones from Cutler and Van Pelt.

Rod Smith is a pro’s pro. He looked very good today going against Champ Bailey in the morning practice. He still has all of his quickness even though he has lost a step speed wise. It will be great for these young receivers to learn from a veteran like Rod.

Javon Walker looked pretty good today. He seemed to be thinking about that knee though. He will need to get over that mental aspect if he’s to every fully be at 100%. After practice Javon had this to say about going up against Champ Bailey: “That was a good first day challenge and the thing about it was that I had that ball, but him (Champ Bailey) being the veteran that he is stuck his hand in and knocked it away. Today is the first day, and it is just like one-on-ones when we were going at each other, so there will be many battles to come and that is the best thing about it. When I am going against him in practice it will make the game so much easier.”

Brandon Marshall did something I’ve never seen him do. He “alligator armed” a pass. That was his only mistake from today’s training camp. He is very big, and although he’s not a burner, he does have very good quickness. I like the way he’s running routes. It’s good to see a rookie perform like that on his first day.

Darius Watts didn’t drop many passes today. He is a preseason stud, so I am very hesitant to lay much praise on Watts unless he starts performing well in October/November. That being said, he had a good day at practice.

Todd Devoe is a hard worker. Unfortunately for him, today wasn’t his day. He had some easy drops and looked frustrated at times. He did catch a TD from Bradlee Van Pelt, so perhaps he can build some momentum for the rest of training camp.

David Kircus drops way too many passes. Nice guy, but there is no chance he makes the final roster.

Charlie Adams dropped some easy ones. He is a hard worker, but lacks the consistency needed to be relied on.

Domenik Hixon did not practice, and Ashley Lelie was not there.

Tony Scheffler is a better blocker than advertised. Now, he’s not a devastating blocker, but he is a very willing blocker, and that will get him a long way. He has incredible hands, and catches the passes with arms extended away from his body. His technique is top notch, and many media types were saying he could be the starter on opening day.

Nate Jackson has improved every season I’ve watched him play. He is a hard worker, but his natural ability is clearly overshadowed by a player like Scheffler. He did make some nice plays, and provided a consistent target.

Just got back from the morning practice with my boy Big Sean. here's some pics from the morning! Brandon Marshall is looking great!

Was Dayne 1st out of the gate in the morning practice?Marshall...love 'im. 2nd round rookie pick in my dynasty sounds like he may be contributing sooner than I had planned.

2.10 22 Mission Accomplished! Marshall, Brandon DEN WR

And Scheffler. Wow...wasn't expecting any mention of starting the season in the #1 spot.

6.10 70 Mission Accomplished! Scheffler, Tony DEN TE

Good stuff...keep it coming! Bronco Homer stuck in ND...OUT.

You won't find a bigger supporter of Tony Scheffler than myself. I took him ahead of Joe Klopfenstein in jaWs. I also would've taken him ahead of Marcedes Lewis (who I believe could be a bust). Among rookie TEs, I have only Vernon Davis ahead of Scheffler & they're really close.

If Scheffler, indeed, proves to be a competent blocker right off the bat, he'll get a lot of PT early on (even if he doesn't start). He's one of the safest (if not the safest) rookie picks in a dynasty draft, IMO.

Fantasy implications aside, if this remains true, this will have *HUGE* implications for Denver's real-life offense this season. As phenominal as that O-line is (best in the league :boxing: ), you have to think that the RBs will be just fine. Rod Smith is still Rod Smith, and even at less than 100%, Walker's an upgrade over Lelie. Plummer's been a top 5-10 QB every year since he came to Denver. Really, TE was the only position with any questions- since it was below average last season and seemed to only get worse with the loss of Putzier. As far as fantasy implications go- if Denver does finally have a TE that can both catch and block, he's not coming off in the red zone (like Putzier), and he's not going to be ignored in the red zone (like Alexander). I think all of the TDs from the fullbacks (I believe Johnson had 4 last year) will go to Scheffler, as well as several of the rushing TDs as well. Scheffler immediately becomes a fantasy force, and Dayne/Bell see a slight hit to their numbers (more Dayne than Bell, since Bell's more about the long-yardage TDs). Again, this is assuming that Scheffler remains as good as advertised. Personally, I'm skeptical, since TEs generally have the steepest learning curve between College and the Pros.

agree, it's easy to get excited (from a fantasy perspective) about a talented TE in the Denver offense, but it's hard to get too excited about a rookie TE not named Shockey.

Private First Class Kellen Winslow was also pretty close to dominant in his two games as a rookie before he got himself injured and missed the season.Which does raise an entirely unrelated question. Did Winslow receive a Purple Heart two years ago when he broke his fibula? I thought that all soldiers did when they were injured in the line of duty.

you and i have severely divergent understandings of the word "dominant"

Link. Not bad for his second game as a professional football player.

Edit: But we're going very far afield, here, so let's get back to talking Broncos. :)

just got back from the day 2 activities. Will write my report and post snippets here.

Here's another pic to enjoy!

It's from when Dayne mooned the fans standing at the back of the endzone. I was right on the sidelines, but someone got an eyefull!

 I've been pimping Scheffler since the draft. I've been responding to questions in the AC forum when someone asks who they should take after Vernon Davis. I've been saying that Scheffler is the 2nd best TE in this years draft but people shrug and act like I don't know what I'm talking about. As far as pure ability and potential as well as system, I think Scheffler landed in the 2nd best situation behind VD. In my 32 team dynasty I took Scheffler with the 1.21 pick...right after Marcedes Lewis. People are still telling me that I don't have a TE on my roster. Scheffler's measurables were very similar to VD's. The only knock is that he came from a smaller college. I'm hoping he'll be the #1 TE in Denver from day one...atleast week 4.

Day 2 snippets:

Bradlee Van Pelt was playing not to make mistakes, and it showed. He held onto the ball forever, and struggled making the reads through his progression. When he did throw he was routinely opening his receivers up for punishment with his errant throws. Yesterday was not a fluke, this guy has not improved any from last year. I know he has a new haircut, and a new attitude, but he will have to find a new team if he keeps playing this way.

Mike Bell bounced back in a big way. Yesterday he was berated by coaches for his fumbling and lax effort. Today he came out with a vengeance. He showed good power when running through the middle and was actually the best cutback runner today. He had his helmet knocked off, yet kept fighting for yards. That really impressed the coaches and veterans. He will find a spot on the roster if he continues to play like he did today.

Charlie Adams had a bad day. No other way to put it. He’s playing his way out of a job.

who's playing their way INTO the WR3 job, then, Cecil?
I would like to say it's Marshall. But Watts is playing very good ball.
I liked Watts last year in preseason, but he seemed to really lose it in the games - dropped what appeared to be a lot of easy passes last year.

Watts has always been a beast to cover. He gets phenominal separation, really good off the jam, very quick moves. He would be a pro bowler if it were just for one little detail- he can't catch the ball. A lot of it is the result of a physical defect- he injured his hand when he was young and is missing some tendons. He calls it "The Claw", and has a hard time gripping things with it. He managed to compensate pretty well in College, but has struggled in the pros. If he starts catching more consistantly, he's going to be an NFL force. Remember, this is the kid that broke all of Randy Moss's college receiving records.

Thanks Cecil for your posts. This is the area of content that FBG's needs more of and hopefully they will be able to expand to this type of coverage to every team eventually.

I thought that they do with their camp reports?
