Bears safety Brown out indefinitely with Achilles injury

Aug. 14, 2006

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Chicago Bears safety Mike Brown is sidelined indefinitely after "a twinge" in his right Achilles' tendon Monday.

The injury occurred during the Bears' 28-14 preseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Friday.

"We hope that it's minor, but whenever you don't have one of your best players on the field, there's concern," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "But hopefully he'll be back on the field before long."

Brown said he would be prepared to play in Green Bay on Sept. 10 in the Bears' season opener, but couldn't be certain if he'd be back the rest of the preseason for practice or games.

"I like to work," he said. "I don't like to be on the sidelines out here watching these guys work. But at the same time I think I recognize it doesn't mean anything. It really doesn't. I think I prepare myself mentally all the time, so mentally no problems. I'll be in shape."

Brown missed the final 14 games of the 2004 season with a torn right Achilles' tendon. Last year, he missed the final four regular-season games and part of the Bears' 29-21 playoff loss to Carolina with a calf injury.

Another serious Achilles' tendon injury could jeopardize Brown's career.

"I really don't worry about that," he said. "If it happens, it happens. It's a part of it. It's a part of life and life can't always be good. Would I be disappointed if I can't play? Yes, but would it be the end of the world? No."

Brown was replaced in Sunday's and Monday's practices by second-round draft pick Danieal Manning.

"The plan was to get him a lot more (plays) and to rest Mike a little bit more anyway," Smith said. "But it's good to see Danieal get those plays."

Well...I guess it's the same Achilles but nobody knows the severity. Early reports are Brown "twinged" it (per Rotoworld).

-- Mike Brown OUT Indefinitely --

Mon Aug 14, 2006 --from FFMastermind.com

AP reports Chicago Bears S Mike Brown (right Achilles tendon) is sidelined indefinitely after suffering what on Monday he called "a twinge" in his right Achilles tendon. The injury occurred during the Bears' 28-14 preseason-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers Friday. "We hope that it's minor, but whenever you don't have one of your best players on the field there's concern," Bears HC Lovie Smith said. "But hopefully he'll be back on the field before long." Brown said he would be prepared to play in Green Bay against the Packers Sept. 10 in the Bears' regular-season opener, but couldn't be certain if he'd be back at all the rest of the preseason for practice or games. Brown missed the final 14 games of the 2004 season with a torn right Achilles tendon. Last year, he missed the final four regular-season games and part of the Bears' 29-21 playoff loss to Carolina with a calf injury. Another serious Achilles injury could jeopardize Brown's career. Brown was replaced in Sunday's and Monday's practices by rookie second-round draft pick FS Danieal Manning.

I haven't read anything official on this, but I imagine Chris Harris would replace Brown at SS and Danieal Manning would take over at FS. Could be a nice upgrade for both of them. Some of the reports I've seen have even suggested D.Manning could take over at SS, but that wouldn't really play to their strengths, IMO.

In chiacgo, we heard harris at SS and manning at FS for the meantime. a boost for both in IDP; an slight drop in chicago Def overall.

Bears | Brown to miss remainder of preseason

Tue, 15 Aug 2006 12:42:23 -0700

Updating previous reports, ESPNews reports Chicago Bears S Mike Brown (Achilles') will miss the remainder of the preseason due to an Achilles' tendon injury.

I am still hoping he recovers. I thought he was going to have a huge year.

With all the discussion and research we did this spring on this injury giving us a baseline of 4-6% recurrence rate on Achilles injury plus Spikes' statement that it was a matter of when (not if) his sore Achilles would tear last season, I'm staying far, far away from any player that says his Achilles is sore.

Especially guys that have already had an injury to the same tendon.

 Never saw that quote before.

So what do you think of:

St. Louis' Steven Jackson had some Achilles pain leading up to the first pre-season game, but he was explosive in his chances vs. Indianapolis (5/41/0 rushing) - the soreness doesn't appear to be a big problem.

Hard to know. Spikes didn't have a history of Achilles problems before last season that I'm aware of -- it may have been an athlete yapping after the fact or he and the team may have had information that suggested he was playing with some pretty significant inflammation in the tendon.I'd be inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to Jackson. Also no history of Achilles issues as far as I can remember and I don't think it's uncommon to have some minor tweaks, pulls, and inflammation get blown up a bit in the preseason when the movers and shakers are being babied.

Worth paying attention to, though. Seems like we had more injuries that were traceable to know degenerative or chronic conditions last year than I remember in the past. Ahman Green, ?Takeo Spikes.
