There is a reason behind the Kerry Collins signing. Volek is a UFA at the end of the season. that being said Mort was just on ESPN saying the Titans feel Vince Young is more of a project right now and could be three years away from being a NFL starter.

Kerry Collins could fill that void for at least 2 seasons. The signing makes much more sense now.

So thats why they signed him for 1 year?Floyd Reese and Jeff Fisher will not be in TEN after this season. They arent making plans for 3 years down the road.

They brought in Kerry Collins because Volek has been god-awful this year, as he has been the rest of his career.

I dont know why that is so hard to understand. Ive been correctly predicting this situation since April, I dont understand why people havent started listening to me about it.

 
Mort's been very low on Vince and I think it clouds his judgement, unless of course, he and haters are right.

Pretty solid read on the deal

"Billy's got some competition," Fisher said. "I've spoken with Billy. Billy's not too awfully pleased with it. But that's life in the National Football League."

Fisher said the Titans have been talking with Collins for a while. He likes the 6-foot-5 quarterback's ability to pick up an offense, his strong arm, legs, vision, and ability to move around in the pocket.

The Titans are 0-3 this preseason and finally decided they needed more competition at the quarterback spot.

The 6-2 Volek is a six-year veteran who has only 10 career starts. He has thrown for just 277 yards through three exhibitions and completed only 52.5 percent of his passes. Then there's Young and Matt Mauck, who has only a year's experience.

The only quarterback not affected by the signing is Young.

Fisher said he could see both Volek and Collins on the final roster or Mauck still around. He cautioned that the worst thing for players would be talking about what could happen.

Imo, the notion that Young is less ready than Leinart and Cutler has little substance. I know that's contrary to the opinion of many solid football minds, but when the Titans hit the deep skids, Young is going to play. It will probably be a series here and a series there around mid-season, and I expect him to close the season starting. The problem for any QB there is the team is awful. Cutler is on an excellent team, and Leinart is surrounded by premium talent.

Both are accurate depictions of him. If he's got a good offensive line and good skill position players, he can make plays and win games. If he's asked to do anything special beyond running the offense as designed, as is the case with a bad offensive line that requires him to elude pressure, he's screwed.

Do you think the Titans will have a top-5 scoring defense this year, as the Giants did those two years? (The Giants had the #15 and #22 scoring offense those years).

There was a 3-4 week span after McNair got hurt that Volek was putting up 300-400 yards and 3/4 TDs a game near the end of the season in 2004 (I think). Drew Bennett was on the receiving end of those numbers.

Good information. I think a majority of the board, including myself, had completely forgotten about that. Im surprised no one has used that information in an argument for Volek before.

He also took Carolina to an NFC Championship game, and yes the defense also carried the team that year as well.

Regardless, I think there are far worse QBs out there. Collins isn't a horrible QB and he's hardly to blame for Oakland's misery....as a Redskins fan, I can tell you all about suffering through Norv Turner. I think Volek should be the starter for the Titans and I think Vince Young is years away from being a viable NFL QB.I have no idea where this thread is going so I just threw out some chum :o

I heard what Mort said. He also didn't quote anyone directly, or indirectly, from within the Titans organization. They went to Mort to get some info on the two latest QB signings, Collins, and George. He didn't have any info on either one, so he threw some crap against the wall.A quick word about this "three years away" nonsense. Can anyone tell me the last team to draft a QB, then cultivate him for three years, playing him little, before starting him? Young will play some this year, in certain packages I've read, and if he is alive next season, will be starting. And if not, then there might be something to questions about him. Because if you have questions about Young for the next two/three years, you don't sign Kerry F'n Collins.

I don't know how the Titans went from the greatness that they were in the late 90s to THIS. They are a seemingly rudderless ship right now.

Dueling ESPN commentators. :) John Clayton just said the Collins signing is a direct shot at Volek and has nothing to do with Young.

Oh, Volek looked really good.in 2004

 
There's 3 options as I see it:

1. Mort is a genius and correct. Thus, the Titans really screwed up by drafting VY 3rd overall.

2. Mort is an idiot and very wrong. Hence, VY should be the starter for game 1 of this season.

3. Mort is neither a genius nor an idiot, and the truth lies somewhere between option #1 and 2.

Based on what I saw in college and what I've seen in training camp/preseason I'm going with #3. Which pretty much leaves us back to where we started before Mort opened his mouth on this topic. If I were a VY owner--and I'm not--I would not sweat Kerry Collins or Billy Volek.

 
I figured out my problem w/ this signing: It signifies to me that the Titans think they might be one Kerry Collines (vet QB) away from being competitive. The team lost a fair number of close games last year and the defense SHOULD be better with some key additions. That said, as much as I would love to believe this is a 9+ win team, I just don't see it. In fact, I think they look atrocious at present. The Oline is terrible, they can't stop the run....eek.

Sorry, guys, no link to this, but on Fox Sports Radio yesterday afternoon, they had Chris Landry, their College and NFL guy, on and he was also saying that Vince Young is still far away. Apparently in practices about 55% of his passes are being INTERCEPTED. With that, Chris Myers and Nate Newton just kinda went silent for couple of seconds in disbelief.

Just passing along a disturbing tidbit I heard on the radio.

Considering who the DBs are on the team, I find that stat impossible.
 
Young isn't a natural pocket passer who played in a one-read shot gun system and relied on his legs to succeed. It's perfectly reasonable to expect lots of time for him to become effective, if he even makes the leap at all.

That has got to be total hyperbole. As for Mortensen, I would take anything he says about Young with a whole shaker of salt. For some reason, he really seems to have something against the guy and continues to say blatantly false things about him as if they were fact.

No, I don't think Young would be a very good WR. He would be among the slowest WRs in the league, and does not have the experience to compete with the other slow WRs. He is a great open field runner for a QB, not for a WR. Someone like Vick might be able to make a transititon to WR, but Young simply doesn't have the tools.
