didn't he have hammy problems in the pre-season? This could be a lingering issue...

Steve Smith 'questionable' for Panthers season opener

PAT YASINSKAS

Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith missed Wednesday's practice and is listed as questionable for Sunday's season opener against Atlanta.

Smith missed most of training camp and the entire preseason with a left hamstring injury and an in-grown toenail. But Smith's absence Wednesday was due to a different injury. Coach John Fox said Smith tweaked his other hamstring in Tuesday's practice.

Wasn't the main reason Smith missed so much time in TC and preseason because of an ingrown toenail that he had removed? I realize he pulled the hammy, but I thought most of the missed time was chalked up to the toe surgery.

I would be willing to bet that he starts and plays.

I think more and more coaches have learned that there are no consequences to playing the injured list like a fiddle, and that more coaches are using it strategically. Questionable is supposed to indicate a 50-50 chance of playing, yet even without running the numbers we all know of players who played essentially an entire season while questionable. Jeff Fisher is know for only using Questionable and Out, never probable or doubtful, on his inury lists.

It was. He tweaked his other hamstring.

Ohhh yeah man two HUGE games looking at Smith this week. Hate to wish ill on a guy but these hammy injuries just do not go away.....

So he did not aggravate his hamstring injury, he injured his other hamstring. As as SS owner I find this slightly better then an aggravation of an existing injury.

Just wonderful...whether he re-aggravated his existing one or tweaked his other...either way you slice it..why do i have a feeling that we SS owners are going to be :wall: all year.

Im hoping im wrong though.

LOL. How long did he sit out when he hurt the first hammy? Expect the same on the new injury. Rose colored glass syndrome.

says to me he has rushed his rehab - he probably has been running gingerly, and favoring one leg vs the other. IMO, he needs to take a good month off, to be completely healed. hopefully they won't rush him back.

Agreed. They should be able to run the ball well vs. the Falcons and Keyshawn can pick up some slack.

FWIW, last year the Panthers listed 4 fantasy starters as Questionable and 3 of them played. They also listed 9 fantasy starters as Probable and all 9 played. They had the 5th highest "Play Rate" in the league among teams with at least 14 fantasy starters on the injury report.

I agree. I bet he will play and play extremely well.

Without giving away any subscriber info, this is precisely the reason why I take issue with FBG's rating him as high as they did. If he's healthy for the entire year, that rating's justified, but hamstrings and groin injuries tend to linger and so it stinks when they pop up in the preseason.

:pickle: I am playing him this week!
Are youa) playing him, as in playing against him?b) playing him, as in playing him as one of your starters?c) playing him, as in "playing him out as if his name was Sega"?d) any of the above because it doesn't matter to anyone here if you are playing against him or have him in your lineup

Also, small sample size, but there were 13 fantasy starters listed as Questionable with a Hamstring last year and 6 of them played. That 46.2% Play Rate is the 3rd lowest among body parts with at least 13 instances, behind the Knee and Ankle.

What's your problem then? If you are so smart that you knew his hammy injury would "pop up" again you should be happy that you didn't draft him in his ADP and let others do that instead.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Carolina Panthers All-Pro receiver Steve Smith has more hamstring trouble and is questionable for Sunday's game against Atlanta.

Smith, who missed 17 days of training camp with a strained left hamstring, did not practice Wednesday because of pain in his right hamstring.

Coach John Fox said Smith suffered the injury in practice Tuesday.

"He tweaked his other hamstring and we rested him today," Fox said. "We'll see how he looks tomorrow."

Smith injured his left hamstring during the second practice of training camp July 29. He missed more than two weeks with the injury before returning to practice on a limited basis.

Smith was then sidelined another week with an ingrown toenail that required stitches, and did not play in any of Carolina's four preseason games.

"He practiced 10 times and he's in great physical condition," Fox said. "We're just taking it slow, but he had a little setback."

Smith was the league's top receiver last season with 103 catches for 1,563 yards and 12 touchdowns, becoming the first player since Sterling Sharpe in 1992 to lead the NFL in all three categories. He shared the Comeback Player of the Year award with New England linebacker Tedy Bruschi.

Either Keary Colbert and Drew Carter will line up opposite veteran Keyshawn Johnson against the Falcons if Smith can't play.

"He didn't play in any of the preseason games and we handled it pretty well," Fox said. "Those other guys are ready to play when called upon and the depth there definitely helps."

Falcons coach Jim Mora plans to see Smith on the field Sunday.

"Lots of him," he said.

Cornerback Ken Lucas bruised his arm in practice Wednesday and his status for Sunday's game is unknown. Linebacker Na'il Diggs dressed for practice Wednesday and is listed as questionable with a sprained right knee suffered in the third exhibition game.

Defensive tackle Jordan Carstens practiced, but is listed as questionable with an elbow injury.

how can you blame FBG for his ranking? there was no indication he had any serious injuries, and there really still isn't.

its all pure speculation at this point
