Despite missing most of camp and three preseason games, the Bears kept him over Michael Haynes and Jamaal Green AFTER Alex Brown hurt his shoulder. That leaves just Israel Idonije and Anderson. Idonije is versatile, but doesn't have the pass rush (read: fantasy) upside of Anderson. Anderson has some great test numbers, and was widely projected as a Day One pick, but fell b/c he's light for an everydown DE. The one preseason game he played in, the athleticism was demonstrated.

So now we enter Week One with Brown's shoulder dinged up and Idonije missing practice all week with an ankle, and a questionable Packers OLine on tap...in no way am I recommending to go out and pick him up, barring injury he won't do much this year, but he's an interesting guy to keep an eye on and could be on the field Week One. Among Jerry Angelo's many faults, identifying mid-to-late round defensive performers is not one of them.

Whoa...quite an impression on his first series in the NFL. Sacks Favre then stands up Ahman Green on the next play for no gain.

Ya know, evertime this kid takes the field (that I've seen) he makes "quite an impression." I thought he, Wimbley, and Lawson were clearly the best DEs at the Senior Bowl. I'm still befuddled he fell so far in the draft. With Ogun and Brown I can't see much of an impact though. Considering how much time Anderson missed, this is an impressive start. I like that the sack came in the 2nd quarter on a first down play. Who did he replace? More info please.

Primarily Alex Brown at RDE. He replaced him for the series he made the aforementioned plays on and then saw some work in garbage time. It was nice to see Brown get a sack. I've pretty much seen every game of Brown's career and I've never seen a guy get so close so often and not close the deal. I contribute part of that to if he were a bit stronger and quicker he would be an elite pass rusher, but he has enough strength/speed and pass rush moves that he also gets held more than any other Bear on passes.

Not much of a stat line this week, a solo and a fumble recovery, but he is making a transition to situational LB. He was in as a nickel LB a half dozen times and he dropped into coverage as much as he blitzed. Additional info from someone closely following the Bears would be appreciated.

So will that make him a hybrid type player - part-time DE part-time LB? And if that is the case does it become another one of those situations where if his position says DE - he could be gold and if he is listed as a LB he will be much less valuable ( example Jets DL/LB Bryan Thomas) ?

Probably not. I think his value is deep dynasty only and based 100% on future speculation. This year is probably a wash unless injuries force him into more PT.

The fumble recovery was 20 yards downfield, definitely something I took note of. I wouldn't roster him right now, but I wouldn't hesitate to pick him up if Brown or Ogunleye miss any time.

I happen to have him in 2 dynasty leagues - one he is on the taxi the other he is on the active squad 16 team 40 man roster - no taxi squad. Just wondering if on the one league - I should cut him in favor of a different DL - was thinking about DE Victor Adeyanju?

6 in one hand, half dozen in the other. Adeyanju, like ANderson has flashed the potential to be a solid starting DE. Victor got in because of Hargrove's missed practice issues, if you hear that they become a bigger problem, then jump on Adeyanju. Since the Bears D is more potent and likely to be set up for big sack games, I'd hold Anderson.

6 in one hand, half dozen in the other. Adeyanju, like ANderson has flashed the potential to be a solid starting DE. Through trades and other moves I made room for Anderson. He will start for me this week ahead of Charles "I can't get a sack unless Vick falls right onto my feet" Grant.

Are you assuming that Ogunleye will be out? If not I wouldn't expect Anderson to produce a lot every week. He got his two sacks after the Bears were up favorably.

He's getting snaps in a rotation subbing in primarily for Alex Brown. His previous sack was on first down in the first quarter of a close game. I'm not ready to start him, but... he's very promising and more than a pass rusher.

I assume that if Anderson gets 4-5 snaps he will outproduce Grant.

Thought of picking him up a few weeks ago. Another owner started the bidding on Thursday and it was between him and I. Gonna be a lot more interested parites come tomorrow. :moneybag:

 
OK. What's the roadmap/timeline for Mark Anderson becoming starting DE?

Anybody know how many snaps he's currently getting amongst the CHI DE rotation?

Previously, he'd been getting 10-15 snaps a game keeping Alex Brown fresh. I didn't see yesterday's game, but with Ogunleye out and a huge lead, he probably got at least double that.Both Brown and Ogunleye are solid players, so, while you may see Anderson get a few more snaps moving forward, he'll still be a rotational player for the foreseeable future. Both Ogunleye and Brown are under contract through 2009, Brown very cheaply, Ogunleye not so cheaply. So, other than injury, there's no clear path to a full time gig right now.

And add Charlie Pephra at NYG who is in the rotation and Anthony Madison who is playing for Pitt.Bama was loaded on D last year.

What's your take on Brown? I'm sure I underestimate the player, but he's always seemed like a solid defender, but not the quickest pass rusher. I'm pretty sure Anderson won't supplant Brown, at least not this year, but would it stand to reason that Anderson would get more 3rd downs (and long), pass plays and other times when the Bears are more interested in attacking the QB than stopping the run?

My read on Brown has always been that he's a half step slow to finish the play. His skill set suggests that he should be a better than expected run defender for his size (he is) and that he should get to the quarterback often with a fairly quick first step.But reality has been that he's good for pressuring the pocket but not good for finishing the play. His game logs bear that out. Six multiple sack games in the past four plus seasons, but only 25 total sacks. I don't have any explanation for that.I like Anderson a lot (so his most vocal pimpers shouldn't take this the wrong way) but having the freshest legs on the field for 12 snaps a game and garbage time duty against a horrible OL/QB this week in Buffalo doesn't necessarily mean he's pushing for anything more than a few more snaps a game right now. He may be Robert Mathis, he may be DeWayne White. I think he's more likely to become Robert Mathis long term because he looks like he'll have success against the run.I think he's in line for a couple more series a game now -- maybe a Buffalo/Philly type rotation -- if this production keeps up. I don't see him playing more often as a situational guy because I don't think any of the three Bear ends work well at tackle on passing downs.
 
From what I remember, A. Brown is a hard worker and plays hurt. Maybe he has no choice given his measurables.

 
One writer's take on the Anderson situation.

Rookie defensive end Mark Anderson knows his place, so despite leading the team with 5½ sacks through five games, he laughed off the idea of moving into the starting lineup.

"I'm playing behind two great defensive linemen, with a great defensive line," Anderson said. "My role is to just go after the quarterback and make plays, and I'm doing what I am supposed to do."

There is no way Anderson is ready to take over for Adewale Ogunleye or Alex Brown, but his production has been impressive and could lead to more repetitions in obvious passing situations.

Anderson has been remarkably productive in limited playing time. Not only is he the sacks leader, but he's also sixth on the team with 12 solo tackles. It helps being on the field with Tommie Harris, who demands double teams, and other rushers such as Ogunleye, Brown or Tank Johnson.

"No sack is easy," Anderson said. "Any one you can get, it's great. With those guys doubled up, it gives me a chance to go out there and do something."

I may be starting Anderson and Brown this weekend. Anderson cost me but I think he's a fine dynasty prospect.

It was discussed when they drafted him. It was planned before an injury kept him out for almost two months prior to the opener. So, it seems to have been shelved for now. I think they toyed with him as a rush LB on 3rd and long a couple of times (with Ogun and Brown in the lineup still), but I cannot confirm it.
 
Not watching but he's filling up the boxscore nicely. Cost me a hefty bonus to sign him but he's a must-start at this point as long as Ogunleye is out (top-10 DL after this week).

Did Anderson start? BTW, where do you go to get that info anyway (who started/played)?

Yeah he started because Ogunleye was out. He was playing "OK" until he made the sickest move ever around the RT to sack Lienart and force the fumble. ;) (He was unblocked)I thought he was in on a few more tackles then what are showing up in the box score. The gamebook at NFL.com after the game shows who started.

Yeah, that really bothered me last night. I had him started in a Zealots league and I lost by less than 1 point. By the way, 1 tackle = 1 point, assist - .5 points.
