Portis owner... I tend to agree with the bold section.

The morning report on Sportstalk 980 in DC said Betts was starting. I'm sure they'll be updating all day long.

ASHBURN, Va. -- In a surprise announcement, coach Joe Gibbs said Saturday he thinks Clinton Portis will be a backup in the Washington Redskins' Monday night opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Gibbs was testy as he wrapped up a week of mystery over whether his star running back had recovered sufficiently from a partially left dislocated shoulder. Portis was upgraded from questionable to probable on the injury report, although Ladell Betts remains set to start.

"If I had to say, I think Ladell will start and Clinton will play a backup role in the game," Gibbs said. "That's the way I think it's going to go. I think that's what we've tried to accurately portray during the week."

It isn't what Portis has portrayed. On Thursday, Portis all but ruled himself out of the game and said he was only 75 percent healthy. On Friday, he said he wasn't even sure he would return in time for the Week 2 game at Dallas, then joked that he was up to 83 percent.

On Saturday, Portis changed his tune.

"I'm about 93.9 right now," he said. "I've still got two more days to get to 100 percent. ... At the rate things have been increasing, it looks pretty good."

Portis practiced Friday and Saturday, when the team wore shorts. Portis took part in only a portion of Thursday's full-pads practice, leaving open how well he has tested the shoulder. Portis has expressed concern that tacklers will target his left shoulder once he returns.

"We haven't had a lot of physical contact since I've been trying to go," Portis said. "So it's basically mental, being in the right place and doing the right things, getting timing down -- just in case."

Gibbs took exception to the notion that he would play Portis without proper preparation.

"He's practiced," Gibbs shot back. "I'm not 'throwing him in' there."

Gibbs didn't say how much Portis would be used. Portis hasn't played since hurting the shoulder while making a tackle in the Aug. 13 exhibition opener at Cincinnati.

"We'll kind of let the game portray what role that will be," Gibbs said.

That was from Saturday, so things could have changed by now

don't really understand how he's healthy enough to be a backup but not healthy enough to get the start.

The field should be just about perfect. It stopped raining awhile ago, and it wasn't that bad to begin with. It's just cloudy now.

On ESPN one minute ago: Portis will not start but he will play.
Count me among those who find little sense in this. If Portis can play why isn't he starting? If he isn't healthy enough to be the starter and take the starter's workload why even risk playing him at all? Very odd decision by Gibbs in my opinion.

My take is that he is healthy enough to be the starter, but hasn't been practicing like a starter.

Kinda like Parcell's comment about not playing TO if TO's not been practicing.

I'm gut feel is that Portis is fine and will see plenty of playing time.

I am playing him tonight, but really don't have a shot unless he and Randy Moss completely blow up, so this isn't a "I hope" post. Just a gut feel I have about the situation.

Latest word from the Skins pregame show per Bram Weinstein is that this week was simply Clinton being Clinton, and that he knew he was playing even when he was saying otherwise. That being said, Bram says he will be used in a LIMITED capacity, and he feels it's going to be along the lines of a decoy role. If anybody gets 20 carries tonight, it's going to be Ladell Betts. The shoulder still isn't right, and CP won't be put to the test tonight.

If Gibbs puts Portis out there tonight in a backup role and Portis further injures his shoulder Gibbs is going to be destroyed -- and rightfully so in my opinion. This is a game the Skins should win. They don't need Portis and I think it's a huge risk to play him if he isn't ready to be the starter.

Local news in DC, NBC (george Michael and Sonny Jurgensen) reported that Portis will play. Dr. Andrews gave him a clean bill of health and said that his shoulder is the same now as it would be in 3 wks.

Now Portis or Betts? Tough!

####!Now what. I really just wanted one or the other.Ugh.

One thing good that comes out of this is at least we will have a baseline if and when Portis is questionable again

Portis isn't starting because he's probably not in game shape. I honestly believe his shoulder is as close to 100% as it will get. He's the backup tonight because he hasn't practiced enough to get his game legs back in time. I expect him to get at least 3-4 series but probably not much more than that.

if you want to trust Irving, he said he spoke with Portis' trainer all week, and Portis is now 100% and will "get plenty of carries tonight"

Nothing new? WASH homers? Help. I am about to start Betts over Portis and know I am going to regret it.
Well at least we knew to expect this pain early on when we drafted him (most of us anyway).I'm in dire need of a score (80 yds would only help the cause) to get back into a game and have CP and Duckett (no Betts).Unless something changes quickly, I'm going to roll the dice and hope-n-pray CP has made up the 6.25% in the last 2 days and Gibbs is playing w/ the Vikes. Betts to start the first series and CP runs out to standing ovation for the rest of the game :crossesfingers: I just have a hard time believing that Gibbs & Co really have faith in Betts after trading for Duckett a couple weeks ago.

Anyone watching Monday Night Countdown?

Suzie just said that Portis said hes 101%....Betts is the starter and hes ready for whatever roll they give him. The running back coach told SK that Betts will play until he is tired and then Portis will come in...after that, Saunders is hoping Portis wont want to come out.

What the $#%$@$#@@ is goin on?

So which one has the better game?

He did not say that, this is no where close to what he said. He said he'd get some playing time, how much is unclear.

I'm gettin my ### kicked ..literally .. he had Wilkins (24 pts) and still has LT waiting in the wings .. I've got Portis or Betts & Cooley and I'm down 29pts .. so it really doesn't matter who I start ... but just for kicks .. I'm going with Betts ... :bag:

Im the opposite....im down pretty big and the guy has RMoss still going....therefore Im going to go with Portis and hope he blows up. I figure he has a better chance of blowing up than Betts...that is if he plays.Good luck to you...its all a crap shoot now.

wrong, almost 45 minutes ago he said EXACTLY what I posted. By the way did your cowgirls win yesterday? :)
You're hearing things, he did NOT say what you posted, I've been watching ESPN for the last two hours and Irvin did not say what you posted. Get it right! The game didn't effect me, I did bet any money................try again.
By the way did your cowgirls win yesterday? :)
This is a typical post of someone who has nothing to contribute.

Guys....what do you think? I've got Chester Taylor or Portis and 5 minutes to decide. Taylor looked crappy during the preseason.......so should I roll the dice now that Portis is going to get some carries - or play it safe with Taylor?

Portis carries a little risk, but has a much higher upside. Depends on how much your down. If down a little go with Taylor, down a lot go with CP.

Thanks.....I went with Taylor. I'm only down 7 and I have Taylor and C. Cooley - so I played it SAFE. I just hope Portis doesn't go "off" and I end up losing by 1 cuz Taylor can't get out off his own way. But - that's why we play this crazy game!!!!!!!!

I would go with Chester Taylor. From what I have been told, Portis is 100% but will see limited action tonight. Chester Taylor may not be as talented as Portis, but he is going to get more carries tonight. So I think you have to go with the RB that is guaranteed to get some touches.

Portis in on first series, looks good with a run and a catch.

WHEW!

not whew yet.... he wasn't in on the next series... which just ended swiftly w/ a puntwhen he went down after that tackle he landed right on his left elbow.... not super hard... but pretty hard.... that PTI dude said something about him not knowing where he is because he was still on the field as the next play was about to be snapped (which was a FGA)i'll be "whew"ing when i see him on the field again busting off 6-7 yard runs
