Obligatory Portis thread - any DCers hearing anything (1 Viewer)

Gibbs said we'll see how this week goes.

I would expect that he starts next week as long as he practices this week.

FYI, Portis's shoulder was sore after the game, but it was not reinjured or anything.

Agreed. Gibbs gave no indication that Portis would NOT be starting. This is Dallas week and the city is going nuts, national TV, and its PORTIS. He will be out there with the starting lineup without a setback. As a side note, Gibbs also said in an interview, responding to the criticism/question of not using Duckett, that, had there been any goal-line situations, Duckett was going to come in and get the carry. So all you tinfoil hat Portis-loses-goal-line-carries-to-Duckett-for-SURE folk can feel completely justified.

Not exactly Brandon Jacobs but I suppose if they are actually ON the GL Duckett gets the call. I was/am one of the ones saying "no way Portis gets yanked down close". Wednesday, September 13, 11:29 AM EST (Week 2)News Story: With head coach Joe Gibbs confirming that T.J. Duckett is his goal-line back, Clinton Portis' value takes a slight hit. However, Portis scored a five-yard touchdown in the season opener and should get plenty of scoring chances.Source: RotoTimes

Might be that when they talk about Goaline back, they really mean Goaline - that is TJ comes in when the Skins are on the 2 or 1 yard line.

That still eats into Portis's production

I would have been more comfortable about the situation if Gibbs hadn't confirmed Duckett as the GL back.

Hoepfully Portis can punch it in from the 4 yard line everytime

Clinton Portis: Expects to See More Touches in Week 2 RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.comWednesday, September 13, 2006Update: Portis said he was surprised he was able to carry 10 times against Minnesota after missing most of the preseason with a partially dislocated left shoulder but ached all over on Tuesday because of it, the Washington Post reports. Portis expects to be more active against the Cowboys, and said it was important to take a few hits. He is wearing a harness and extra padding on his shoulder. "To get that first play out of the way, I was like, 'Oh, okay, I'm straight,' " Portis said. "I'm all right to play." Recommendation: It sounds like his soreness was from not practicing all preseason and not because of his dislocated shoulder. This is good news and it appears he will be in for a heavier workload in Week 2.

I don't know whether goalline back literally means "on the goalline" or "inside the five" or what. Only time will tell.

As far as drawing conclusions from Monday's game goes, though, I'm still wondering whether they had Portis in there simply to see him in action or get him work given his lack of work during the preseason and the injury, or whether that was truly indicative of what they plan to do during the season as a whole.

True, but just about every back in the NFL gets his production eaten into. At the end of the year, his production will be top 5 if he stays relatively healthy. Pretty much all you can ask.

I've always took it to mean that when it's 4th and half a yard, that's when you're short-yardage package comes in. Or, obviously, inside the one at the stripe.

3rd and 3 isn't really that "short" in my book. If Duckett only gets carries on 4th and inches all year, and maybe narcs carries on 1st and goal on the 8 inch line, I won't be that surprised. I won't be shocked to see him run out there anytime it's less than 5 yards to get a TD either. I guess we'll see. I honestly never really thought he'd effect Portis THAT much when they traded for him. I still believe he was picked up primarily as a disaster option in case Portis AND Betts were both unable to perform.

Now that Duckett's there, he'll certainly get used, but the degree of the use won't be as great as some of the "oh @#$%@!!" crowd would have you believe, barring injuries to Portis or Betts.

Perhaps a bit of both. Based on what Gibbs said and what we saw monday night, I'd say it's possible it's literally the goal line he's talking about. And maybe only when it's 3rd or 4th down and 2 (or less). They weren't really in that many short yardage situations the other night. I still have a hard time believing that rule of thumb will be that they pull Portis inside the 5. 1st and goal from the 5 and I have to believe he's still in. He's a pass catcher as well. I own the guy and I'd be more worried if I had Tiki or Dunn. I see the Skins being a running team this year. They are going to have to control the clock as long as they have problems in the secondary.

I just can't see Gibbs using a meaningful regular season game to get a look at a guy. I think Duckett will be the jumbo package guy and they didn't use that package against Minnesota. Notice I said jumbo package and not necessarily goalline back. I can see a situation where they come out with a spread formation at the 1 with Portis and run it.

What will also be interesting is whether they opt to put both him and Duckett in there, maybe with both Cooley and Sellers lined up as TE's with only 1 WR lined up wide. Does anyone know how well Duckett is able to block as a FB? I'm really pulling for the team to limit Portis' carries this season. I think he'll be fresher and will get more yards per carry if they do that. I'm just not sure whether Betts or Duckett or both would be the one to spell him for a series or two per game.

Incidentally, here's the world according to redman as it relates to the RB's:

Starter and best overall RB: Portis (obviously)

Best goalline/short yardage RB: Duckett (based upon historical evidence)

Best receiver: Betts (Portis is good, but Betts is better)

This naturally seems to imply certain roles, namely that Betts is a 3rd down back (he's the KR, so they'd figure to limit his carries anyway) and Duckett is the goalline back as Gibbs has said.

The only questions for me are how often or when Duckett will get inserted into the lineup as a short-yardage runner (e.g. inside the 5? inside the 2?) and also who and how often a RB spells Portis on 1st and 2nd down carries in the middle of the field.

In my opinion, GL probably means when the "jumbo" package is in...

4th and 1... or most of the snaps at the 1yard line...

It definitely hurts Portis value - he will probably still get the 4 / 5 / 8 yarder runs for a TD (or those he breaks loose) - but that will hurt him when the offense is at the 1... which might not seem too much at first glance - but just think of all the pass interference / holding plays occuring in the end zone...

I think with the loss last week, Portis is a lock to play. If they had won, he may have split with Betts. But at 0-1 with a division rival next, they can't wait.

Duckett and Betts are FAs next year. They are no more than short term stop gaps for a potentially hurt Portis in a year that Gibbs thinks they can win the SB (not looking good there).

I expect a small purge next offseason on the offense (lose Betts, Duckett, Brunell, Randy Thomas to clear up some cap room to pursue a FA QB. I was at the game on Monday and WRs were open all over the damn field. And I don't mean a little open...I'm talking 5-10 yard separation. I've liked Brunell all his life, but he clearly doesn't have the confidence in his arm to make throws deep over the middle. Maybe Gibbs has him scared to throw it, maybe he can't throw it. Dunno. Probably will give Campbell a shot later in the year if things go bad, but deep down this organization knows it needs a QB. Schaub would be perfect for this offense. ;)

I have no reason to think that Portis does not start and carry the rock at least 20 times. That team has no chance at winning anything without Portis playing. It is that simple.

Start him every week and don't look back.

They have a short week and, not surprisingly, his shoulder was sore after the MNF game.

For the forseeable future he's going to technically be a game time decision as they'll be resting him as much as possible to heal the shoulder.

Unless, however, something else happens that sets him back, he'll be playing.

I agree with much of this but I don't think they should lose their best o lineman(Thomas). Agree that it's obvious that the team has no faith whatsoever in Campbell. If they did, they would have named him the backup instead of playing the silly game of having Collins come in if Brunell goes down in a game.

Local reports that he will play but not start. Betts to start, but Portis would like to get upwards of 20 touches. Whether he gets them remains to be seen.

Unlike last week, I'd say that he's the RB1 for fantasay purposes off of that roster, and Betts starting is merely a way for them to continue to test and monitor his health, all the while increasing his workload to the extent possible.

I'd expect 12-15 carries this week - just my hunch.
