Steve Smith Returns to Practice (1 Viewer)

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith practiced Thursday morning.

Smith has missed the first two games and the entire preseason with injuries to both hamstrings and an ingrown toenail.

Smith's latest injury was to his right hamstring but the fact he returned to practice is a sign he's progressing and could play Sunday at Tampa Bay.

Great news. Do you guys think he will be a force if he plays this weekend, or more of a decoy?

I am a bottom feeder (usually trade down to the last spot), stud WR theory type of guy and I had to put up with the decoy crapola from Randy Moss last year. Even if he does play, I am still thinking of going the safe route with Crumpler.

Any thoughts?

No, I don't think the Panthers would use him as a decoy. They won't put him on the field unless he feels good and can play. Also with the injuries they have with other players, if Smith isn't healthy enough to play, it seems they would make him inactive, and use his roster spot for depth in the game at whatever position might need it.

At 0-2, I'd consider this a must win game for both teams. If SSmith needs to be out there as a decoy, I don't see why they wouldn't do it.

Great news but puts me in a tough position - I was settled on S Moss and D Jax who both have good matchups this week.

Do you sit a solid WR with a good matchup for SS's 1st game against a traditionally tough defense?

Hmm...he goes to see specialist, then practices? Oh oooooo...could he be? Could he be? He's baaaaaaaaack!!!!!!

Okay, got carried away there for a second, but you have to admit that is the best news in a long time for ol Steve Smith...errr...owners.

This is very good news going forward. I just can't see myself starting him this week regardless though. I REALLY want to, but I would just hate myself if he was used as a decoy or pulled up lame again in the second series of the game.

I can't imagine that he's in 100% game shape after being hurt for so long either.

yes until proven otherwise imo

Best news of the week. I agree with most, I sit him this week even if he plays. Next week...... :football:

I think starting Smith on your FF team this week is a big risk. But it is great news for owners of him from here on out.
unless you have no other alternative due to the BYEs of course... to me, S.Smith on one leg is still better than my BYE week fill-in (M.Jenkins).

Due to my bye week options leaving my dynasty choice narrowed down to Smith or  Clarence Moore :wall: somehow, unless he is listed as OUT there IS no option.

My feeling about that "visit" to Andrews all along has been that it was for a checkup. Seems to have proven as such. Comon down, Mr. Smith, time to make an impact!

Even if hes a decoy, having him on the field helps Carolina BIG TIME. He HAS to play if Carolina wants to salvage this season.

How does this affect Delhomme's potential this week? If Smith is used as he always has in the offence, it's an obvious upgrade, but even if Smith is used as a decoy, I have to think that opens up the field a little more for Delhomme, too, no?

I'm curious to know why anybody would sit Steve Smith if he's starting on Sunday? Where's the logic? Here's a guy who refused to come back one moment sooner than he was '100% ready' to do so in his mind. If he's starting for the Panthers, he should be starting for your fantasy team, period.

Delhomme and DeRBBC both.

narrowed down to Smith or Clarence Moore
I'm new here but trust me. Dump Clarence Moore and pick up Demetrius Williams for this week. The Ravens are trying to work him into the line up and if you are desperate enough to have Moore on your team and think about or be forced into playing, then Williams is the one you want.As a Steve Smith owner my self, I will gladly wait out his potential first game back and swallow a huge day IF he has one. Luckily I have a few other options that present real possible numbers and hell, one more week without him in the line up is worth it, especially if it means a 0 for him again and even 1 or 2 pts from some nobody. :hey:

Stay with Djax and S Moss, unless you're facing a top team and don't think you can win with D jax and S Moss. Then i'd start Steve Smith just for potential alone.

This is from the Panthers Website today.

Comments from Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox following the team's practice.

On changes to the injury report: The only two changes are Ken Lucas and Steve Smith. They are still listed as questionable, but both practiced today.

On how Smith looked in practice: You hold your breath, but he looked like he made it through pretty good. He looked good with the things he did on the practice field today, so we'll just see how he looks and feels tomorrow.

On if he limited Smith's work at practice: Not really. We just put it on him. Nobody knows their body like themselves. He looked and moved around well.

On how excited he is about possibly getting Smith back: You know what he means to our offense and the confidence of our offense. Obviously, I think we are a better team with him out there.

On if Smith will play against Tampa Bay: He's day-to-day. When he's deemed medically ready, he'll play.

I agree with you here. In the league, he is most important to me, my 4th and 5th WRs (Moulds and Booker) are not total wastes of spaces as fill-in starters(number 3 on bye), but if Smith is in the line-up for the Panthers, I am not running those guys out ahead of him no matter what his match-up is.

Key word-DYNASTY. While I didn't offer specific's, there is noone of any relevance to add, nor am I able to today if there were. :( Sorry about the sidetrack.Back on track, should he be good to go, I question those of you who state that they are taking a wait and see attitude about him. Should he play I see no reason why the Panthers would risk him as a decoy. So unless you have options available at WR within your leagues starting requirements, just how deep can you're depth possibly be in any league of 12 or larger. I, as well as the rest of you will be on edge awaiting his playability this weekend. Ah, don't ya love the drama of fantasy football. :D

patience grasshopper... we have until Sunday morning to feel this out- more news will likely come that will further clarify this situation (we play three wideouts though, so I would definitely like to play Smith over A Battle!)

I took Smith as my #1 and Housh as my #2. I need all the good news I can get about these two guys.

Thank goodness for Antonio Bryant (who I targeted in every league), I'm 1-1.

Ask a Randy Moss owner of the past 2 years what it's like to see your star WR come out for 3 plays and leave with one catch for six yards. He'll stay on my bench until he shows he can play. And I hope for all Steve-Smith-Owners' sake they don't make him do too much if he's not ready. Better to have him healthy for 12 weeks than have him in & out for 3 weeks then miss another six.

I've gotten burned both ways with a situation like this before. Leave the guy on the bench because you're not sure he's going to be 100% and he goes nuts. Start him and he catches two balls and is on Sportscenter talking about how it felt good to catch the ball again. I'm of the mind to go with the steady points. At WR it's hard to predict steady, but I would take solid points over the gamble unless I really needed the win. I would take the guy with the lower ceiling but higher floor over Smith that would be a much higher ceiling but his floor could be decoy and just a couple (or no) catches.

I have a good matchup this week - the guy I am playing hinges his entire team on Palmer to CJ and they are playing Pitt this week. Don't think I need a blowup game from Smith to win just consistant production so likely going with Jax (NYG) and S Moss (Hou) and just watch smith this week. Will be nice to slot him in my starting lineup eventually.

i dont think he'll come back just to be a decoy

his whole thing all along was he wont come back until he's 100% ready to go, he must feel like he's close if he's back practicing.

Funny how these guys always heal so much quicker when the media starts questioning their injuries, i hope thats not why he's back on the field today, i hope he really is healed. And thats as a football fan, not a fantasy owner.

if he practices on friday, he's going in my lineup (ahead of braylon edwards and lee evans) Im playing a pretty strong opponent and need to put my best team on the field. The panthers need this game. Smith is gonna play hard and play well.

Fixed ;) Just got him in a trade, but wasn't counting on him for a couple more weeks. Just hope he really is healthy before they run him out there.
:lmao: That was good.My logic is hes angry about all the bull going on. Although SS doesnt get into the media hype (i mean doing his talking to the media vs on the field) he keeps his anger bottled up and explodes on the field. If he plays hes going to go all out. I would'nt be suprised if Coach didnt sit him this week just becasue he knows how SS is and doesnt want him to re-injure himself pushing his limits.

Between the DeAngelo smak talk, The hold out rumors and watching his Pathers lose without him, I think he will go nuts out there. Kinda reminds me of why he won comeback player of the year. His motivation was all the poeple saying he was done and his previous seaosn was a fluke. Look what he did.

Smith went to see Dr. Andrews before that Tampa Tribune writer questioned his injuries, and wrote the trash about him holding out. I would think he saw Andrews to make sure all was OK, and if he would be putting himself in a position for a setback. As careful as he has been about coming back healthy, I don't think he would let some writer's rag column bother him enough to play before he is ready.

Of course this happened -- I'm playing the Smith owner (and Housh owner) in a money league this week. :P

:pickle:

If he's healthy enough to start for the Panthers on Sunday, he's healthy to start for me!

Keep your eyes open!

Does anyone else get the feeling that Smith might revert to the production of a very good #2 WR?

I just have a weird feeling about him coming back. The two times that we've seen a Carolina WR go nuts since Delhomme became the QB were in 2004 when Smith was injured, leaving the team with Muhammed and a scrub #2 WR, and in the 2005 season, where Smith took over as the #1 WR with no viable #2 option for Delhomme. This time, the #2 WR isn't complete garbage, and unfortunately I think the ball will be spread around much more evenly between Keyshawn and Steve Smith than if Smith was the clear #1 WR.

And upon further review, the targets for Steve Smith average out to about 145 for his last two full seasons (he had 150 last year), so I guess there isn't much weight to this argument as far as targets are concerned. But it does seem like the presence of a strong #2 WR hinders the performance of the #1 WR over the past few years.
