Reports: Thurman arrested

By GEOFF HOBSON

September 25, 2006

Posted: 7:10 a.m.

Already serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, Bengals middle linebacker Odell Thurman was arrested early Monday on a charge of high tier operation of a motor vehicle while impaired.

According to Fox 19, Thurman, 23, failed a breathalyzer at a checkpoint on Kellogg Avenue in Cincinnati.

It's unclear how the NFL is going to handle the arrest, but clearly his return to practice scheduled for Oct. 2 is in jeopardy.

This is true, and evidently Chris Henry was involved (along with another inactive player). They haven't been charged with anything, however. Details are still sketchy. The incident occurred at 5am.

Yes, it's true...heard it coming into work this morning on 700 WLW (AM station in Cincy)...not sure about the Chris Henry or any other players involved...they didn't mention that...yet. Good grief.

For the good fo the team, it's time for Bengals coaching staff to make a freakin' statement to these players. They need to release one of these baffons. If the Bengals would concentrate on playing football as well as they do getting arrested, then they would have the Super Bowl already won for this year.

Signed,

A diehard Bengals fan

Since this is Substance related, that puts him out for a year, no? Does this have to go through the courts first before it counts as another ding on the substance policy? I wonder if the league Piss-man showed up and asked for a sample this morning just to make sure.

Yeah I think if Thurman gets convicted that's strike three. I don't know what strike three means for Odell, but it's probably not too good.

Apparently, he was driving Reggie McNeal's SUV and tried doing a U-turn away from the checkpoint. I heard Henry was riding shotgun, but no charges were filed against him.

Suspended Bengals LB Thurman charged with DUI

CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman was arrested early Monday on a drunken driving charge.

Thurman, already serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, registered 0.18 percent on a blood-alcohol test -- more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to the police arrest report.

Police said Thurman, who drove an SUV across a double-yellow line, was stopped about 3 a.m. near a sobriety checkpoint operated by police and the State Highway Patrol.

A second-round draft pick out of Georgia last year, Thurman led the Bengals in tackles and had five interceptions as a rookie, helping Cincinnati reach the playoffs with its first winning record since 1990.

The arrest is "certainly a concern since he recently was suspended, but this is an entirely new case," Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said Monday.

Thurman has one game left on his suspension.

The Bengals (3-0) defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 28-20 on Sunday to stay in a first-place tie with Baltimore (3-0) in the AFC North.

Sooner or later all these negative off the field events are going to negatively affect this team. Kind of wears the management down after awhile.

LOL at them deciding Thurman was the most sober and having him do the driving. Now that TJ is back, maybe Marvin will make a principled stand  and suspend Henry a game for Conduct Detrimental to the Team

And I always thought Marvin Lewis would bring some discipline and accountability to that team.....

This is one of the single biggest :tfp: I think I've ever seen for an offseason and regular season, as far as off-field issues...

No doubt this will make the Steeler fans happy. Helps with the denial of "we lost" from the other thread.

As a Bengals and NFL fan, they need to release him and anyone else they feel is a detriment. By releasing I mean the NFL. But some other team would just pick him up. But then again we can find similar issues and psoblems on most any team, including the Steelers.

So maybe we should start there. Let the Steelers set the example on their team. Clean up your house and then maybe you'll be in a better position to pass judgement on others. :boxing:

The Packers could use some LB help, and Koren Robinson may need a ride to the field on game day.

Sounds like Mo Clarrett #2...what an idiot. One thing that ticks me off is nfl players who blow opportunity after opportunity.

And to think I drafted this punk in my IDP league.

LOL, umm who said anything about the Steelers being squeaky clean? And who's passing judgement?

A Bengal gets arrested and the Steelers get a tongue lashing from FM.

Caught a little snippet about this on Rome when I was in the car for a minute at lunch. Apparently, Henry was riding shotgun and puked out the window, and a rookie (didn't catch who it was) was passed out in the back seat.

Those guys know how to party. :banned:

That's what is being reported. The rookie was Reggie McNeal. And Henry did indeed boot out the window.

Jim Rome: "Shouldn't he have been cited for littering?" :lmao:

News Enquirer

Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman was cited at 3:05 a.m. today and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Thurman was stopped in the 3800 block of Kellogg Avenue in the East End after a Cincinnati Police officer saw him drive on the left side of a double yellow line. A videotape of the traffic stop was released this morning by Cincinnati police. The officer asked Thurman to step out of the car and asked him how much he had to drink. "I had a couple of beers,'' Thurman responded. Thurman said he was driving because the others he was with "had more than I did.''

The officer gave Thurman a field sobriety test and put him in the back of the police cruiser. He was brought to a checkpoint operated by the Cincinnati Police and Ohio State Patrol and submitted to a breath test. Thurman blew a .17, which is considered a high-tier reading, said Officer Stephen Lawson of the Cincinnati Police Traffic Section. The .17 is more than double Ohio’s legal blood-alcohol limit of .08. Thurman was released to a sober driver, Lawson said.

Thurman was one of at least three players in a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe. The vehicle is owned by Bengals rookie wide receiver Reggie McNeal, who was a passenger, said a source at the scene. Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry was a passenger and threw up out a window of the vehicle. Neither McNeal nor Henry was cited or charged with any type of violation.

Thurman, 23, was the only occupant charged with OVI, Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated (OVI). He is to appear in Hamilton County DUI Court on Monday, Oct. 2.

I just figured it out. It's the Steelers fault for losing yesterday, thereby causing the Bengals to party hard. At least this explains why Colclough was back there for the punt return -- that Cowher is always a step or two ahead. Lose to the Bengals so a player will get arrested again. Brilliant!

Can anyone say "inferiority complex"?
I'll bet that most people on this forum can say that quite easily assuming they aren't physically incapable of pronouncing words. As for Thurman/Henry...I've defended all of the players that have had petty issues off-field this season for a long time now, but come on guys. I can't keep making excuses to keep doing it. These young players go out and think they're above the law and invincible. I guess I thought I'd see a little more maturity at this point than this. I'm not going to even think about faulting Marvin Lewis though. He's not their father. He is their boss who controls what they do on the football field and cannot make personal decisions for them all of the time. I hope this doesn't blow up into a big thing again so they can concentrate on the season.

Every 1st, 2nd or 3rd year player in the NFL is young and rich. Few of them get into the trouble that Thurman and Henry get into, much less repeatedly. The responsibility for this rests with Marvin Lewis as far as the Bengals go. These guys' problems were well-documented when they came out of college, and Lewis has apparently systematically chosen to ignore them and instead focus on their athletic talents. It's a non-sequitur to respond that "Marvin can't make their personal decisions for them." Marvin chose to pay these knuckleheads gobs of money and stake his team's fortunes in large part upon the unlikely chance that they'd actually manage to fly right.

Or we could save the time involved in making a new smiley and just go with this(Might as well get a shot in since the Steelers and their fans were pre-emptively bashed.)

Players who repeatedly get arrested are showing disrespect to their teammates, the coach, the owner and the organization and essentially thumbing their noses at their local fans. I understand they're young, but every 23 year old in the NFL isn't going out and behaving this way in public. I'm not sure what the coach can do once they're in the organization (although I understand your point that the Bengals have created this situation and now are forced to deal with it). I feel sorry for Bengal fans, as they didn't choose these players, they just root for their team. Yes, they're happy if these players bring them victories, but I'm sure they don't want the negative publicity and reputation as the NFL's largest collection of outlaws that is coming alongside the success. And I feel worse for guys like Carson Palmer, Rudi Johnson, Willie Anderson, and the vast majority of players who appear to be class acts on and off the field.

Did I say anywhere that every young player in the league is going out and causing trouble? I was obviously referring to the Bengals' recent string of young troublemakers.

Bengals WR Henry and WR McNeal in car with Thurman

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman was arrested early Monday on a drunken-driving charge.

Thurman, already serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, registered 0.18 percent on a blood-alcohol test - more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, police said.

Police Capt. Dan Gerard said an officer working near a DUI checkpoint saw Thurman drive a sport utility vehicle across a double-yellow line and stopped him. Thurman was with two other Bengals players, but police declined to release their identities.

However, rookie receiver Reggie McNeal told The Associated Press that he and receiver Chris Henry were in the vehicle with Thurman. He declined to go into detail about what happened. Neither player was charged.

"Just a misunderstanding," McNeal said, as he left Paul Brown Stadium on Monday afternoon.

Thurman was taken to the checkpoint, being operated by police and the Ohio Highway Patrol, and given a breath test, Gerard said. Thurman was released to a companion who was sober to drive him home, police said.

A court appearance was scheduled for Oct. 2, the day he was scheduled to return to the team.

If convicted, Thurman could get a tougher sentence because of the high blood-alcohol level, patrol Sgt. Jon Payer said. The average sentence for a first-time offender in Ohio is three days in jail or an alcohol-education program and a $500 fine, he said.

Thurman, who has one game left on his suspension, is the sixth Bengals' player arrested in the past year.

Cincinnati (3-0) defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 28-20 on Sunday to stay in a first-place tie with Baltimore (3-0) in the AFC North.

As an Aggie, I'm suprised and slightly disappointed to see McNeal rolling with Odell and Henry. The guy seemed to stay clean at A&M. Oh well.

i agree that frostee rucker & aj nicholson had disturbing priors, which made there selections questionable...

i'm not sure henry & thurman had anywhere close to their history...

henry & thurman had some disciplinary issues in college, but i don't think they were nearly as serious as what they subsequently became in pros (some of henry's stuff was minor, like getting penalties in a game & maybe getting benched for a game or part of game)... a lot of college athletes aren't choir boys... i'm just not sure it was a lock from college behavior that henry would start brandishing guns & get drunk driving arrests?

again, the rucker & nicholson picks were puzzlers & head scratchers, because they had scary priors on their records...

If it is true that Henry was in the car and threw up out the window, I will be suprised if he doesn't face some kind of suspension because I believe that part of his conditions following one of his recent arrests were that he was not allowed to consume alcohol. I'll try to find the link to that article but the guy was already on eggshells before this. As a Bengals fan, I can't agree more with the statements about the team making a statement with one (or more) of these players. Everybody talks about C.J. being like T.O who was a cancer on his team but these idiots are going to be the cancer of this team. Even more frustrating is that you see a kid like Henry who obviously has talent but zero brains... :hot: :hot: :hot:

This is normally true but if they didn't check to see if he was intoxicated he could have said he just had a stomach ache.

Until the next time, when someones kid gets killed. I am a bengals fan, but Marvin has got to get these kids under control. I could care less if they drink, but they make enough money to have a driver for these nights.
