Game Thread W4 - New England V Cincinnati (1 Viewer)

Sign of the times - CBS description of the game:

Bengals all time rushing leader Corey Dillon returns to Cincinatti. Dillon and fellow RB Laurence Maroney struggled in a 17-7 loss to Denver last week. The Bengals rode Carson Palmer's 4 TDs past Pittsburgh 28-20.

Rudi = top-5 back.

He's looking REALLY good this year - as a runner, by talent level, he looks as good as LJ or SA.

Wow. After looking nearly unstoppable, Cinci gets held to a field goal. Let's see if the Patriots can get any offense going now.

Patriots offense takes the field. First play from scrimmage is a Dillon run for 5 yards. Looks like he's OK.
And right back to him for the first down. Gabriel and Reche Caldwell start at WR, and Wesley Britt starts at right tackle for the first time. Notable that both of Dillon's runs went left. Brady's first pass goes to Kevin Faulk for a long first down, and then a pass to Doug Gabriel. I don't have high hopes for Gabriel this year, but Brady sure seems to be looking his way more often since the second half of last game.

Yep. It's going to work out okay for the Pats here. Bengals have Caleb Miller at ROLB today for the most part. He runs about 225lbs and will probably get pasted by Daniel Graham all day long.

Marvin Lewis running onto the field to call a timeout but too late - the Bengals are called for 12 men on the field on 3rd and 3. Penalty kills the drive and Graham gets another long field goal.

Stupid question, maybe I missed something ... but what was the silver, handwritten 52 (I think) on the football?

Second offensive drive of the game and it's Dillon again with two more good runs and a first down. Between Faulk and Dillon, Maroney has not been on the field yet.

One minute left in the first quarter, and Maroney is in the game. Brady drops back to pass on first down, and Maroney makes a great block stopping a blitzer cold and getting in the way of a second defender. He gets a one yard carry on the next play, and now he's off the field in favor of Kevin Faulk on third down.

Rudi on a nice looking screen pass for 18 yards. Palmer is throwing on the Patriots at will.
RUN THE FREAKIN BALL  wtf did Lewis take OC lessons from Marty S?
The Patriots have barely an NFL talent in the secondary right now. Rudi will get his chances but you're going to see a lot of passes today.ETA: If this keeps up, Rudi will get plenty of chances come clock-grinding time.

Ugh. Brady with a very nice pass to a wide open Gabriel, a little high, Gabriel tips it up and Cinci intercepts.

looks like maroney won't be a factor today. Pats are behind early and Dillon is in the game. I wish I would have had another option this week.

Pats are behind by 6 at the start of the second quarter. It's not like they're forced to pass the rest of the game. Dillon's had four good carries, Maroney's had one bad one. The real problem is the Patriots can't keep their offense on the field.

Oh God. Troy Brown comes in for a snap on defense on third down.

The good news is they stop the Bengals, who ran the ball on third and three, and the Patriots survive the turnover without giving up any more points.

Gabriel with two more short receptions, although the second was called back on a defensive penalty. It seems like he's the receiver that Brady trusts the most right nowoutside Faulk. He has four targets. Simms mentions that Brady pointed out Gabriel as a specific player in whom he has a lot of confidence.

Nice catch and run by Caldwell for a first down on 2nd and 13.

Maroney with a couple yards on first down, and a couple more on second. Dillon continues to look better running the ball, while Maroney looks more explosive.

Awesome play fake there. Brady with the fake high snap, direct snap to Kevin Faulk, who hands off to Jackson on the reverse, and Brady lays a solid block to get the first down.

Brady then with a deep pass to Watson and the Pats are knocking on the door.

is Watson getting any looks?
He had one deep look on a play action pass on third down, but Brady looked at him for way too long before throwing it and Cinci broke it up.
he just had a deep catch - Brady is looking to him often.
Well, he has two targets so far this game with one catch. It seems like he's been blocking a little more often with their right tackle hurt. That's not to say he won't do well - he's off to a solid start so far - but I wouldn't say he's looking to him often, either.

Chad Johnson drops a pass that hits him in the hands after Seymour tips it on third down, and the Patriots will get the ball back.

First down and Brady again passes short to Doug Gabriel. He drops it and it's whistled incomplete; Cinci wants to overturn the call because they think it's a fumble but can't. Dillon with another 4 yards on second and ten.

Palmer throws to Chad Johnson on third and ten, and New England almost intercepts. As bad as the Pats pass defense is supposed to be, they somehow seem to be containing Palmer so far.

Kevin Faulk with a great return into Cinci territory, and the Patriots have great field position inside five minutes.

First and ten handoff to Maroney, no gain.

Just enough pressure to disrupt timing of the deep out routes. And Palmer still seems to be off with his accuracy. Kelley Washington needs to step up over the middle. Or keep hitting the draw play.Nice job bfred.

Reche Caldwell over the middle for 7 on second down. Next play, he goes in motion and moves to the tight end spot to block for Maroney who picks up the first down. He'll be on the field a lot if he keeps playing this way.

Maroney with a tough run for 5 yards on the next play, and the Pats are in field goal range with 2:30 left in the half.
