Richard Marshall Sleeper CB Emerging (1 Viewer)

Chaos Commish

Footballguy
Marshall got the start this weekend, over Ken Lucas, which is very surprising.

Brees went after Marshall, a vet QB going after a rookie CB, not surprising at all.

Marshall posted 11 solos, recovered a fumble, and was awarded a pass defended for almost doing to Brees what he did in college very regularly. Take him the other way for six. It is Marshall's most outstanding trait, but he is a terrific tackler. Those of you who were following all the draft banter may recall I loved this kid. Hill, Cromartie, Marshall... that's how I ranked the corners... and I thought there was a viable argument for any of them.

What's up with Ken Lucas:

Lucas was surprisingly benched before the start of Sunday's win over New Orleans with coach John Fox starting rookie Richard Marshall ahead of him.

Fox chalked the lineup change to nagging neck and shoulder injuries that Lucas acknowledges have hindered his tackling.
On why cornerback Ken Lucas did not start versus New Orleans: We tried to take him out of as much contact as we could. But there are no guarantees. People can run the ball in third-down situations as well. We were trying to take some of the first and second down pounding off of him. No player wants to be taken out of there. We just felt it was best for him. It's the type of injury that can get better without more irritation. We just tried to take some of that (irritation) away by playing him on third down only.

On how much consideration was given to not playing Lucas at all: None.

On Lucas saying he was benched because of poor tackling: That's my job as a coach. When a player isn't able to do part of his job due to an injury, we have to make moves. He understands why. Kenny has played very well for us. When I think that an injury is the reason and not the talent level, we have to do everything in our power to help alleviate that. We'll evaluate it this week. He may be out there on first and second down. We'll have to see where he is healthwise come Wednesday.

On how rookie cornerback Richard Marshall played in his first NFL start: He did well. There were some things we could have done better in our pass defense, particularly late in the game. But Richard has played well for us all season, and he played pretty good again yesterday.
So, despite the big numbers things are probably the same. I just thought this was a good time to bring up Marshall again. It still takes a Gamble or Lucas injury for him to have weekly value, but there is long-term value here for those of you who separate DBs in deep dynasties. I see him available in a few of those leagues. I don't think he should be.

any updates on his playing time situation? I added him last week.
Early in the week I read the situation remains the same. Lucas will start if he is ready, otherwise Marshall gets another start. At the time it sounded like Lucas was going to be the same. It's a strange situation. Lucas is healthy enough to play nickel, but not start? The reason given is an attempt to avoid contact that could aggravate the neck injury. Lucas doens not soound happy about these developments.eta-- looking for more current info reveals little, but it sounds like Lucas is doing/feeling better.

this was written a couple of hours ago. it is either the rookie or picking up BDawkins off of waivers vs the Cowboys. In the end their point totals could be the same if Dallas does not go 3 and out all day and establishes a run game or if the rook starts.

:dunno:

Here are the key matchups to watch today:

Reuben Droughns vs. Carolina's D-Line. Actually, this should probably be Cleveland's battered O-line vs. Carolina's D-Line, because not only do Julius Peppers, Kris Jenkins, Ma'ake Kemoeatu and Mike Rucker (and Damione Lewis, can't forget him) have to keep Droughns out of the secondary, but they have to apply pressure on Charlie Frye. Cleveland has allowed 14 sacks in 4 games so far, though half of those were against Baltimore -- a game the Browns almost won. Stopping Droughns, however, should be the highest priority for the defense.

Jake Delhomme vs. the Browns secondary. Both of Cleveland's starting cornerbacks, Gary Baxter and Leigh Bodden, were on the injury report and probably won't play today. You're going to see the Browns drop back into zone coverage a lot to try and minimize the damage that Steve Smith can do. It's up to Jake Delhomme to find those open receivers, and it's up to Smith and Keyshawn Johnson to find the weak spots in the zone. If Jake gets intercepted today, it's entirely on him.

Carolina's O-Line vs. Cleveland's 3-4 front. If there's any day for DeShaun Foster and DeAngelo Williams to shine, it should be today. Cleveland's ranked 29th in the NFL against the run. However, the Browns' ability to get to the quarterback is steadily improving, and it'll be up to the Panthers' offensive line to keep Jake Delhomme upright.

Richard Marshall vs. Braylon Edwards. This will probably be the biggest matchup in the secondary today. If Marshall can take Edwards away from Frye, that eliminates Cleveland's biggest deep threat. I hope the rookie is up to it.

fromt the mouth of mike minter:

I think Davis will be a player that will light it up for several years as well as the outstanding play of Richard Marshall. How do you feel about the play of the young rookie so far?

Mike -Oh he’s a football player, that’s for sure. He’s a star in the making and we’ve got a good one right there. It’s going to be difficult because we’ve got three corners that can start and their all young so it’ll be interesting to see how that works out. But Richard (Marshall) is definitely a guy you can look at and know you can count on. Anderson has been solid when we called on him too.

There does seem to be more to this than just Lucas' injury. Thanks for the post, and hopefully Carolina corners merit a little attention from one of the pregame shows. I would probably start Marshall in one league this morning where injuries have me a little desperate.Btw, it really sounds like this kid can play. Pushing Ken Lucas regardless of injury (paraphrasing Minter). I wonder if ANY of the rookie CBs drafted before him would make that claim?

like you, CC, i really liked him leading up the draft... he might have been my favorite sleeper CB & as far as i thought his game might translate to IDP production (good tackler with ball skills & punt returner open field moves)... needless to say i was bummed when CAR drafted him... we picked him up in a few leagues & started him last two in one with good results...

he may put up good numbers even if lucas reclaims his job*... there are precedents in recent seasons where nickle CBs do well... i think anthony henry (CLE) had like 8-10 INTs as rookie, & i think mcgee for BUF also did very well before becoming full time starters...

* edit/add - reclaims was poor choice of words, since lucas technically hasn't lost it... to be more precise, if/when he recovers from neck/shoulder injury sufficiently to resume his usual snaps...

Nice call on this guy CC. As a former Fresno St. guy I was watching, him but you called it. I have been way more entertained by him alone then the entire Fresno St. team this year. :bag:

 [hijack]A friend in Modesto sends me Bulldog games in exchange for whatever WAC or PAC 10 action I get in SD. I have been the lone supporter of Colton Brennan as an NFL prospect here and on another board. I cannot wait to see him hang 68 on Fresno St., sorry! 32-39-409-5. This will be fun. GB June Jones and Jerry Glanville. I'm stunned by how poorly Pat Hill's troops are playing. Since being tied with Oregon in the 4th quater it's been close losses that could have been wins until... Colt gunned them down. They have a bunch of future NFL players on that team-- WR, center, two DTs, possibly an LB, and a first day (1st round?) CB again. McCauley is similar to Marshall. I didn't agree with the early ultra high praise of Wright, and it looks like Lonyae Miller may be moving ahead of him. Miller could end up in the NFL too. Saw him in HS. What a freaky muscle bound stud he was at 17. Anyway, @ LSU and @ Boise St. should be fun the next couple weeks! :P Btw, Hill will right this ship somehow. There could be a big surprise coming to town for one of those ranked teams. Let's hope! [/hijack]

Im not sure he can do it this year. His Fresno teams have a bad habit of giving up after a big loss. Look back at the David Carr team. Ranked in the top ten I think, and then they lose to Boise. Next game they go to Hawaii and get worked. Last year, they take USC down to the wire and finish the year 0-2. I dont think these kids look forward any games after they get pumped up for these big ranked games and then lose. Now a team, already down, goes into it's two toughest games? Bad news IMO.

we have situation in a few leagues where we can afford to roster him...

marshall has been on fire, & i think he is #4 CB in two leagues we have him in, despite only starting one game, i think...

the week he started, he had like 11 tackles...

two games ago he had INT & TD return...

another INT this week...

though not very many tackles... & lucas is starting again... i am seeing people pick up marshall in some other leagues, but it will be hard for him to keep up this blistering INT pace, so if the tackle numbers remain depressed as nickle & situational player, i would expect him to drop down as the year progresses... as gamble & lucas are young and look like will be around a while, it is hard to get too excited about his opportunity in the near-mid-term...

good point about return yardage, CC...
