Jones and Benson (1 Viewer)

Forgive me if this is a repeat, but I didn't see it anywhere. Handcuffed Benson to Jones expecting him to take over at some point. I didn't expect Jones to get the yards and Benson the TDs. Didn't get to see the game- was Benson played in garbage time (which was most of the game)?

Somebody please- what did you see and what do you think about this situation? If you have both would you play both?

I'll hang up and listen.

Benson got 2 series while the game was still competitive, 1 TD came during that time. He also got most of the garbage time action, though TJ was coming in on 3rd downs. The 2nd TD was in garbage time.

I saw the whole game & Benson ran with more authority. He looked really good.

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to wonder if anyone would respond. But was it ever really competitive? And how do you see it playing out? More RBBC or will CB take over?

Thomas Jones will get the vast majority of carries when games are close. Bensen is only a decent start in larger leagues when the Bears are expected to blow their opponent out. It's really this simple.

Didnt see the game, but those stats dont make it look like Benson was better than TJ. Actually looks like TJ was the better back. More YPC, a helluva lot more carries, positibe results when the game not out of hand, etc. Looking at TJs numbers, there werent any big runs to skew stats so he must have run pretty darned effectively.

I've seen nothing to indicate Benson becomes a big factor.

that's sound logic. I would definitely prefer it that way. If you had the chance would you try to package the two for one player or hang on to them?

Some of you guys are absolutely insane. I watched the game and that's not even close to the truth. I swear. I'm baffled at how the minority keep saying Benson is better or running better or whatever. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!! IT'S NOT HAPPENING!!!!!!!! WHAT BEARS TEAM WITH RB'S NAMED BENSON AND JONES ARE YOU WATCHING?????

Agree. I have both as well, and *wish* it were as simple as just start both (as is the case with Dillon and Maroney!). Unfortunately, we're not there now. I'll stick with Jones for the moment, but an injury to either would make the starter a S-T-U-D.

hey man- I didn't see it. Tell me what you saw & what you think going forward?

IMO, due to the Grossman/Berrian success, Thomas Jones isn't overvalued. I'd hang on to him. In fact, I think he's still a buy low.

The Bears are not going to be playing in blowouts every week. As long as the game is close TJ will be the main back. I wouldn't start CB unless I absoluttely had to because of injuries or byes.

And I don't know what people are lookign at when they say Benson looks better. He doesn't to me. Benson looked good running later in the game against a Bills defense that had it's ### kicked all afternoon. TJ ran tough and was breaking tackles early. Let's see CB do that before we start entertaining any thoughts of CB becomming the starter.

Two weeks ago Benson didnt play AT ALL v the Vikings. As much as Lovie wants the kid to play, they dont have the confidence in him at this point and he hasnt proven he can be "the man" in any way shape or form. Its been discussed over and over that the team loves TJ and dislikes Benson. The kid has simply shown nothing that would indicate he is supplanting Jones, or cutting into his time in a significant way.

I'm more of a Jones fan personally, though ultimately I'm a Bears fan and an owner of both RBs. I must say that Benson looked good today; he was running with burst and firing through the hole. As a note, he had some nice holes on his first drive where much of it occurred.THAT SAID, I agree with flapgreen that he was not looking better overall. Very good, but not "better". Jones is very good at the cut back. He stayed with blocks well, did an effective spin-move, and generally showing very good vision. In my opinion, unless Benson shows that he will power through guys (like the old Jamal Lewis) or shake guys in the open field, he's not giving any clear advantage over Jones. Jones has the better open field vision and both essentially go down when met with serious contact.

As for why Benson got both TDs, he literally just happened to be on the field for the two series where the team punched it in.

On an annoying note, Benson coughed the ball up late leading to the Bills only TD. Thanks for ruining the shut out, C-Benz! :wall:

I know. The Benson>TJ posts are just starting to get on my nerves. I watch every game and I'm dumbfounded at how some keep saying this nonsense. TJ had his best game of the season and looked awesome. He's the man in Chicago unless he gets hurt. Every Bears fan knows it. Additionally, Benson looked good today too. I'd love it if he could come in like today every week and play well. I wouldn't put to much stock into his stats just yet. At this time, he's merely there to take some of the load off of Jones. A good 1-2 punch it appears though.

Regarding blocking in the passing game, TJ is much better than CB. This point is often overlooked by those that don't watch the actual games.

Somebody mentioned the garbage time TD that Benson got, but the 1st one was actually after a Bills turnover (I believe it was a Briggs' INT returned to the 32). Benson had a couple of good runs and the TD, but the game was already over (20-0)and TJ already had 60+ yds rushing. Benson was in the game at the right time & hit paydirt. TJ looked very good, but Benson got the important fantasy stats after the game was out of hand. People that didn't see the game are obviously going to think Benson did something, but in reality, it was a one man show when it mattered and Benson wasn't that man.TJ is the play, Benson was a a buy low last week to handcuff him.Sidenote: my buddy lost $200 because he bet the over (34.5) and Benson's fumble screwed him. Tough way to lose!

:goodposting: Both TJ and Benson looked good, but TJ is the unquestionable starter.

Do a search and you'll find that I said by season's end:

Jones would end up with 60% of the yardage

Benson would end up with 30% of the yardage

APeterson would get 10% of garbage yardage (later in the season probably)

and Benson will ultimately hold a 60/40% edge over Thomas Jones in TDs.

As long as the Bears keep winning I don't care who gets the carries. But I liked the mix today. It'll be better for both RBs and the team come December, January and (of course) February.

I watched the whole game and I am an owner of both so I do not care what happens. That said, yesterdays performance is simple and the announcers even mentioned the thoughts of Lovie in the broadcast.

1. He wants to keep both backs rested and in top performance as having a solid running game is their bread and butter. So I would assume Jones gets the first 3 series, then Benson for 1. If they are blowing anyone out then Benson will get the bulk of their carries.

2. After the game Benson did not get an attempt, Lovie made a point to tell him he will get carries. He does not want a young player to lose his confidence. This is a good way to build him back up.

3. The firsts few weeks Grossman has killed the opponents because of the 8 man fronts as things shift then a more balance attach will ensue. That is happening now.

4. As mentioned before Benson was on the field for series 3 or 4 and got the opportunity to score. The 2nd TD came during a 33-0 score.

Is it worthwhile to have a handcuff sure but don't expect Jones not to get the bulk of the carries the rest of the season while the Bears are in the playoff hunt.

2007 might be a different story.

Benson averaged 3.4 per carry  ( yawn), while tj averaged 4.9.. tj is the much better option from here on out..he's going to be one of the top RB's in the NFL the remainder of the season..their S.O.S. is the NFL's easiest.. If Benson can only muster 3.4 per carry vs. the Bills, he has a long way to go ..2007 maybe, this year, he's a backup.

Watched the whole game and become frustrated as a Jones and Benson owner. Jones looked better than ever, and Benson looked good too. If JOnes would have played the whole game he would have been well over 150 yards and 2 or 3 scores, but Benson is a problem now. He ran well. He is NOT the goalline back, like people are saying and what fanball wrote on their site in newsbloggers. He just happened to be in the series when the goalline opportunities came about. It looked like it was precalculated when Benson was going to play before garabage time, and I don't see that changing. I can't see someone starting them both unless you are in a real bind for two backs. Benson is not going to do that with the limited action he will get each week, so Jones still remains the play, but he will not reach potential with Benson lurking. The Bills could not stop either of these guys. The Bills were terrible!

Maybe I am reading wrong, but if your buddy bet $200 on the OVER how did he lose? There were 47 combined points in the game.......

Since all the Bears fans in this thread are basically saying Jones looks head and shoulders over Benson, do you think that the Bears would give consideration to dealing Benson? Or is there plan at some point (maybe next year or 2 seasons down the line) for Benson to become the man?

Unless Benson becomes a cancer, I see no reason for them to deal him. He's young, talented, and he's Lovie's guy. TJ is closing in on 30 and aside from attitude and blocking isnt miles better than Benson carrying the ball. TJ hasnt exactly shown that he's a stud in this league, but he's relatively low miles thus we could see a case (as we see annually the past 5-6 years with different players) where he becomes a much better back as his situation changes in his later years. At this point, I would say it behooves the Bears to keep Benson and continue getting him involved so that he doesnt become a problem.
