How important is an appendix for a QB? (1 Viewer)

Big Ben with his appendix looked like one of the best young QBs ever. 15-1 in his first year and SB win in his second.

However without it, he clearly hasn't been the same. The numbers do not lie...an 0-3 record, 7 INTs, 0 TDs....just horrible.

This begs the question: Just how important is an appendix for a QB? Would it be foolish to suggest that it is as vital as say an arm or a leg or even a heart? If another QB were to lose his appendix how far down would you drop him in your rankings?

Does Big Ben just have to get used to throwing without his appendix? Has he needed to change his throwing motion at all as a result of the loss?

I think your analysis is good, but you need to break it down between grass fields and artificial surfaces, as it is the former that he can no longer digest sans appendix.

I think it's more important for a textbook than for a QB.

When I got my appendix out, I was tender around that area for the next 6 months or so. I think Roethlisberger may be afraid of taking hits, which has caused his tentative decision making. I think he makes a great buy low candidate in Dynasty leagues

My theory is that he's just not used to wearing a helmet.

I think Big Ben is over rated. I think Pitt won the Superbowl despite Big Ben. He had the lowest QB rating of any winning Superbowl QB, like a 22 rating.

I think the artificially sped up recovery time after both invasive procedures may have a little to do with it too, but you may just have stumbled upon the true purpose of a body part commonly felt to be vestigial.

I'd write this one up doublequick.

I think someone stole his mojo.

The Mojo: The life force, the secret behind his libido, has been stolen by his arch nemesis, Dr. Evil.

not that big ben should be thankful he had a tough offseason

but the appendix and face stuff are a really good crutch for his poor play.

people need to stop saying he is rusty because of that crap because it looks exactly like his super bowl

i say big ben=overrated to begin his career and simply having a tough time living up to the hype that built him up

Are you implying that he may have actually lost his appendix before the SB but kept it a secret until recently?

So you think that this whole thing is a farce and Big Ben has never had an appendix??? Interesting!

Big Ben went 17-3 over his first 20 starts. I'd say that speaks for itself.

It's simple. Ben played with a lot of guts. He had some surgically removed and he's clearly playing with less guts now.

Wide receivers are lighter in the torso after the appendix is removed, and also a little more flexible. They can shift other internal organs around to make room for their massive thigh muscles, or to avoid hits. Hence a slight uptick in stats. I think some WR's on the bubble should look into this elective procedure.

I dunno about this theory. I still have my appendix and I would suck as a QB.

Still, I am willing to donate my appendix for Ben if it will help...

Ben was 27-5 as a starter heading into this season. 2 or 3 of those losses came when Ben did not play the previous week so one can make a case that rust is a factor with Ben. As for him being overated everyone can have their own opinion of him but 27-5 as a starter and youngest SB winning QB ever speak for itself so feel free to have whatever opinion you want. As a Steeler fan I know what it was like before he arrived and I can assure you the Steelers did not win a SB in spite of him.

The Steelers had a good defense and running game almost every year of Cowhers tenure but did not win the SB until Ben you know, huh

Yes you are so right. Ben had nothing to do with the Steelers making it to or winning the SB. Nothing at all. Since Dilfer won it with the Ravens that is empirical evidence to suggeset QB play has nothing to do with winning the SB.It's been fun but I better let you go finish your homework so you can get to bed.

Back to the subject at hand: the QB and the necessity of the appendix.

Upon extensive research I have found that Kurt Warner had his appendix out in the Spring of 2000. He did have his best career year in 2001 with a QB rating over 100 but has been a shell of his MVP self since.

Apparently, the removal of an appendix for a QB is a ticking time bomb for his career.

Following this logic, I can with great certainty state that we can expect one great year from Ben in 2007 and then his career is all but over. You just can't argue with science.

yeah, thanks i have a lot of homework to doincluding my report on "average quarterbacks with zero appendixes and the fans who rimmer them" which is due tomorrownight night :hey:

:goodposting:Echoing the excellent Buy Low theory from an earlier poster, but he certainly looks timid. He's lost that swagger, but it'll come back. Steelers need WR help though. Ward wint last forever - Holmes hasn't shown anything yet.Great thread! Keeping me laughing.-- Lax

The Steelers one the Super Bowl?? What grade are you in??You're right though. Ben was just along for the ride during the Super Bowl run, I mean look at the numbers:

@ Cin: 14/19, 73.7%, 208yds, 3TD, 0 INT, 148.7 QB Rating

@ Ind: 14/24, 58.3%, 197yds, 2TD, 1 INT, 95.3 QB Rating

@ Den: 21/29, 72.4%, 275yds, 2TD, 0 INT, 124.9 QB Rating

And while the straight numbers werent great in the Super Bowl he ran for a TD, threw a huge gain on 3rd down into the red zone off a scramble and stop, and oh yea the Steelers WON the game.

sorry bout that. im no norman einstein but i did notice you forgot a little dash thingy between the n and t in werentso the steelers WON the super bowl because big ben did what he had to do to win-nice try, he sucked and lucked out-if he played for the 49ers last year he wouldnt have WON ****

im assuming that his, andrew walter here i come qb rating is because his side is a little sore or something?

Manning has his taken out each January and put into storage.

Pac-10 QB's don't need appendixes- -appendici, -appendiceses, -Pac-10 QB's don't need extraneous body parts.

A blind man could see that was no TD. Unless a helmet counts as breaking the goaline. Regardless, Pittsburgh won and its time to look forward.

People also forget that the Steelers were a 6-10 team (with a pretty poor offense) the year before they drafted Ben. They go 15-1 with Ben starting as a rookie and the only other significant player they added on offense was Staley, who played well the 1st 6-7 weeks of the season before being injured for the rest of the year. I'm not saying Ben was the only reason for improvement or anything, but he was certainly the biggest. I also don't quite understand some of the posts here who can only point to his poor SB, while discounting the fact that it was the passing game (and a tackle) that was the driving force in those 3 playoff games leading to the SB. While I agree that the Steelers have been a run team 1st, it hasn't been based on Ben's ability or lack, thereof. For one thing, the running game has been their biggest strength the last 2 years with Parker and Bettis. Why become a pass-first team (of course they did in the playoffs last year) when the running game's proven to be the winning formula. Does anyone expect Dungy to turn the Colts into a run first team just because they drafted a RB in the 1st rd. Another thing, if I'm not mistaken, Ben led the league in yards per completion or yards per pass, I can't remember. Botton line is Ben has made plenty of big plays the last couple of years leading to his 27-4 record as a starter. As for this year, I think the accident has really affected him more than we think. I've read reports that he has post-traumatic stress disorder from the accident, which makes sense. He just doesn't look comfortable out there, like he's bracing himself for impact when he's in the pocket. The game just seems a little faster for him this year and he hasn't adjusted. Unforunatly, I'm not sure his problems are going to be solved by watching more film or practicing more, it may take awhile for him to undo whatever's been done. Who knows, he may never be the same.

Despite the theory that most people think the appendix is vestigial (for Jene), it is a well known FACT that the appendix is the organ responsible for producing shmutz. And as everyone knows, shmutz is absolutely essential in the development of a young QB. Without the presence of shmutz in his system, Big Ben could quite possibly turn into a reincarnation of Browning Nagle.
