Cowboys WR Owens tardiness leads to argument with coach

IRVING - There might be a reason behind Bill Parcells' decision to not talk about Terrell Owens the last two days.

According to multiple sources, Owens was late to Wednesday's practice, leading to a heated discussion with passing game coordinator Todd Haley. On Thursday, however, Owens and Haley met and squashed the issue.

Owens was not available for comment. The incident is not expected to affect Owens' playing status for Sunday's game against Houston.

During his media availability on Wednesday, Owens expressed frustration with how he was being used in the offense, which has contributed to his 17-catch, 232-yard, one-touchdown start to the season.

During Sunday's game at Philadelphia, Owens, who was held to three catches for 45 yards in his return, was seen mouthing, "Why am I here?" and, "Are you kidding me?" and had several animated discussions with Haley.

On Wednesday, Owens again questioned why he was with the Cowboys.

When asked Wednesday why he thought he was not involved more, Owens said, "I don't know. I honestly couldn't tell you. All I know is, dude, I practice hard every day. The guys know that. When I'm on the football field on Sundays, I try my best to do whatever I can to help win games. For whatever reason, that's not happening."

This is the second off-field issue involving Owens and practice. He missed a team meeting and rehab session on Aug. 25, resulting in a $9,500 fine.

Since signing a three-year, $25 million deal with the Cowboys that included a $5 million signing bonus, Owens' time with the team has not gone smoothly. He missed 21 practices during training camp with a hamstring injury, broke his right hand Sept. 17 vs. Washington and suffered an accidental overdose on painkillers on Sept. 27.

I dont think getting into a heated discussion with the "passing game coordinator" is the same as with Parcells.

You sell more fluff than the media

I'm really getting sick of the media riding TO. I'm starting to really sympathize with the guy.

They need to get off his back and just let him play football. I'd be pissed if my Quarterback sucked too and someone better was on the bench (Romo).

Once Parcells loses to the Texans at home, you'll see a QB switch and a happy TO.

TO would destroy a young QB.

Or make him as good as Moss made Culpepper look.

but if the guy can't get along with a QB that took him to the Superbowl how would he interact with an inexperianced QB? can he get along with anybody except maybe micheal irvin?

i didn't see anywhere in this thread where Parcells was mentioned. except by you.but i agree with whoever said they're starting to sympathize with TO. he's getting a bad rap... and i never thought that was possible...

i made a mistake by putting parcells in the title earlier...but quickly edited it.

 :lmao:

I'm getting really annoyed about the media coverage of T.O. I have always liked people like this that are brash and what not, reminds me of my defending Dennis Rodman back in the day.

TO had perhaps the best QB in the game throwing him the ball and he put up almost his best numbers ever in 2004...didn't seem to be able to humble himself. now what has he got? Is he really making that much more? What would he actually give to win a Super Bowl?

my thoughts exactly... did anybody think he would find a happy home in Dallas? or anywhere for that matter?

A team that hasn't suspended him from the season, and depriving him of his livelihood.
Is he really making that much more?
There's something to be said about Dallas weather.
What would he actually give to win a Super Bowl?
What would McNabb give to win a Super Bowl? What would Marvin Harrison give? Is this some kind of trick question?

Philly suspended him for no reason, right? He wasn't disrespectful to the team and creating chaos and making life unusually difficult for 10 people around him including coaches?Dallas weather blows. It snows there sometimes, 100 degrees in the summer, and humid...I live in Santa Monica...I'll take our weather anyday compared to the dust bowl you call Texas.McNabb is closer to a SB than TO is right now. And mcnabb can somewhat control his destination by leading his team down the field and scoring. TO obviously is at the mercy of an up n down QB. And Harrison/Manning are 5-0 last time I checked.

So you just defend jerks on principle then? Okay.

Wow... overreaction of the day. The Eagles don't let me play football for them either, but I still can earn a paycheck. Playing pro sports is a privilege, not a right.

One problem is that TO is such a physical freak that no QB in the NFL can physically intimidate him. DeMarcus Ware or someone like that needs to step to TO and tell him to back off of Bledsoe or they will whoop his ###.

Hugh Douglas is no light weight and TO threw down with him...

Something is seriously wrong with T.O.

He has the maturity of a 6 year old little girl who is crying her eyes out because she got the red balloon instead of the pink one.

Last year people, including myself, questioned Don McNabb's sensitivity towards T.O

I don't question it now...

This guy is an incredible athlete with a 2c head...

and a cancer to any team he plays for.

Lets start with the media.

There is absolutely NO question that they have legions of reporters who get paid to hype every minor controversy involving a controversial player. In fact, truth be told it is the media who creates the controversial players and people. The article that was circulating earlier posted by Joe B showed just how unscrupulous these leeches are as they did all they could to goad TO into a slip up that they could blow out of proportion.

That being said, it is also worth noting that TO has done nothing on his own to disprove his label as a team cancer. He did attack his QB in Philly. He did attack the organization in Philly. He did attack his OC in Philly. He did attack his QB in SF. He did attack his head coach in SF. He did violate team rules about conduct that lead to his suspension.

He did react in a questionable manner on the sidelines when he didn't get the passes he wanted and the outcome was not to his satisfaction. In this case I see it as merely being a competitive individual who wanted to win and was upset with the way things were playing out and nothing more. However, he made no attempt to support his QB and rather made insinuations that Bledsoe was the problem in my understanding. He also has made public comments today about not speaking to his WR coach and not trusting him because he percieves him to be untrustworthy. I'm not questioning him feeling this way, but when one person continually finds himself in the middle of situations such as this, it may be time to look in the mirror for the source of the problem.

He has never taken responsibility for his role in any difficult situation that I am aware of. I think the media is to blame for some of it without question, but it is simplistic and naive to say that he is a completely innocent victim of how he is portrayed in the media.

Cowboys | Owens no longer dealing with Haley on a personal levelFri, 13 Oct 2006 17:38:45 -0700Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens says he is no longer dealing with wide receivers coach Todd Haley on a personal level because he violated his trust. "Anything is fixable. But at this point, I feel like I have gone out on a limb. People that know me know I don't trust too many people. When I felt like I have gone out on a limb and talked to Todd in a setting where we are man to man and up front with each other, and then I feel like that trust is being violated, then right now I will have a hard time here on out," said Owens. Owens was late to practice Wednesday, Oct. 11 and got into a shouting match with Haley. Owens will talk to Haley about football, but not about anything lese. "Other than him being my coach and me being respectful and him being respectful to me as a player, outside of that, there will be nothing else. No other dialogue. There will be no more friendly nothing because I don't trust anybody like that."
So now he is not talking to the receivers coach, other than football. There is no doubt every single move he makes is criticized, but this can't be good for the team, whether it is his fault or not.

Is the fact that the media is pouncing on everything he does news to him? I doubt it. So why does he continue to feed them with crap like "I don't trust my positions coach"? If he doesn't spout stupidity like that, they have nothing to report. Painting Owens as the victim in this story is more than a little ridiculous.

...... and in other breaking news.... the sun came up and the sky is blue.

Seriously, why is this news? I mean why isn't it front page news every day that Peyton Manning showed up today and worked hard, cooperated with his teammates, respected his coaches and did the right things?

It tells you a lot about the media in this country that everyday you wake up the news is negative negative negative even if it is the same thing that happens every day for years. Every day for the past 4 years TO has acted like an idiot and every day it is front page news. Every day for the past 4 years Curtis Martin has been a class act and it doesn't even make the paper.

Oh well.

You forgot placing his ### and scrotum on a female trainer's face.

That was something like two years after he last played. I've always figured that Hugh was getting pudgy by the time that happened.

For those of you questioning whether this is newsworthy, any player that has a public falling out with his coach is going to get news coverage. It's happened with Jeff George, and it's happened with others including those KC Chiefs that mutinied on Marty in his last season there. I seem to recall LJ having problems with Vermeil that got a lot of attention.

Moreover, what TO was doing on the sidelines would get attention were it any other player. In the second half, when his team was still in the game but when he hadn't gotten the passes he wanted, he was sitting away from his teammates sulking. Then, later on, he's storming around screaming at people/himself/the world.

Need I remind you that Cedric Benson was ripped to shreds by the media for leaving early from a preseason game, and that wasn't even caught on camera? Benson, too, has been caught pouting on the sidelines when he hasn't been playing, again resulting in criticism.

And of course you have the infamous Randy Moss walk-off from the sideline in week 17 of the 2004 season before the game was even finished. It wasn't anything as dramatic on camera as TO storming around or pouting - just a guy walking to the locker room - but that resulted in a storm of criticism.

For those of you trying to defend TO against the evil media, save it. They'll crucify anyone they can, and it's not unique to TO. Besides, are you actually trying to say that TO, through his actions on that sideline, was trying to avoid attention?

passing game cooridinator in Dallas=WR coach elsewhere

Coach is angry he's late, Owens doesn't like getting in trouble...all seems like it happenned as we'd expect. I don't recall reading Owens being late and missing practices and such during his career so...so what the guy was late, it happens sometimes.

FYI Bri.TO has already been late for a few practices & missed or was late for a rehab or two with his hammy problems earlier this year in Big D.Even a fluff piece a couple of weeks back with Deion interviewing him on NFL Network and asking why TO was late for practice. TO said something about the alarm clock going out during the night or something. Then Deion asked why none of his teamates called him to wake him up. TO said someone did, but it was too late.

Let me get this straight... T.O. is late for practice, probably disrupting the schedule and rotations for everyone in his unit, his position coach calls him out on it resulting in a shouting match, and T.O thinks his trust has been violated? How about the trust of the coaches, players and team who trust he will show up to practice on time? Then HE TALKS TO THE MEDIA about it saying he's no longer on speaking terms with his coach about anything other than foodball including "no more friendly nothing" (At this point Brad Childress spits coffee all over his computer screen laughing hysterically). I don't care if the media asked him about it or baited him. If he's stupid enough to say that to a reporter, he deserves no sympathy. This stuff is just too good.

lol at this being a news story. How many guys in the nfl over the course of a season are late to a meeting or disagree with a position coach? TO does it and its magically news. What is ESPN and the media going to do when TO retires? What will they fill their shows with? I am so tired of having everything and anything TO being thrown in my face every time I try to watch sports. I am done with it, lets move on, I'd love to hear about some other players and teams in the NFL other than the Mannings and TO. I am already not looking forward to ESPN coverage tomorrow because this will somehow dominate their time and only give more airtime to Michael Irvin and his opinions on TO. :wall:

TO isn't that good. He is on the downside of his career, expect to see flashes of brilliance but no cosistancy.

John Clayton, on ESPN Radio yesterday, said that Jerry Jones would side with OWENS in a "it's him or me" scenario, rather than the Tuna.

OMG, if that were to happen, all hell would break loose.
Most of this melodrama disgusts me as a Cowboy fan who protested TO from day one, but if Jones chose TO over Parcells, now THAT would be crazy, and I would finally wise up and find a new team.

What if Parcells were to quit not be fired, but quit? I'm sure if he was fired, Dallas would play it off like he quit anyway. What a mess.

Poor, poor TO. If that mean old media would just leave him alone, he could get back to doing situps shirtless in his driveway in peace...

How many times does a WR cut off any contact with the WR coach??From CBS:News: Terrell Owens said on his radio show Friday that his relationship with Dallas Cowboys receivers coach Todd Haley was ruined by a blowup this week. It began when Owens missed the start of Wednesday's practice because of an upset stomach, and Haley berated him for being late. Owens held his tongue then, but they later argued during a meeting. From now on, T.O. said, "there will be nothing else, no other dialogue" between him and Haley.
