(Oct. 24, 2006) -- The NFL will increase its owned-and-operated media assets by bringing in-house the operations of NFL.com, the most popular sports league website. NFL club owners approved the decision at a league meeting in New Orleans on Oct. 24.

NFL.com, which began in April 1995 as the first sports league website, had been produced and operated by CBS SportsLine the past five seasons. NFL.com is the anchor of the NFL Internet Network, which includes all 32 club sites and averages more than 15 million unique visitors during the season. NFL clubs will continue to produce their own sites.

The NFL will fully operate NFL.com, including the development of the technology, infrastructure and content. A re-launch of NFL.com is planned for next spring.

"In a rapidly changing digital landscape, bringing NFL.com in-house provides us greater control of our valuable content and enables us to strategically build the site as a media asset," said Brian Rolapp, the NFL's vice president of media strategy. "Fans can look forward to an even more entertaining, interactive and informative site built upon the expertise of the NFL and its other in-house media outlets such as NFL Network and NFL Films."

Emmy-award winning NFL Network and NFL Films will provide more video assets to NFL.com, including expanded highlights, features and game previews. The NFL also will enhance all facets of the site, including news, coverage of press conferences and other events, fantasy games, stats, search capability and community.

In addition, the NFL will continue to operate its related sites for fans, which include NFLrush.com for kids; NFLHS.com for high school and youth football; NFLatino.com for Hispanic fans; and jointheteam.com, the NFL community relations website. The NFL also operates an e-commerce site, NFLshop.com, in conjunction with GSI Commerce

Loosely translated: "We're trying to decide how much to charge"

Yea exactly. Well hopefully cbssportsline still has the live scoring feature on game day cause it rocks compared to other sites.

Wow I couldnt disagree more, we switched to MFL site this year (we had been on on CBS for 5 years) and we couldnt be happier with our new live scoring and the downloadable feature they offer.

Too bad the NBA website is worlds better than any professional sport website out there.

5-7 minutes game recap of every NBA game, top 10 plays every night, and a host of other videos.

NBA.com > all pro sport websites.

It looks like another step to where all of the NFL product is going to come directly through the NFL via the NFL network and nfl.com.

Seriously. It's too hard to find video (minus youtube) of recent action. NBA.com has done a good job with a lot of video. I especially enjoyed being able to watch the TNT halftime and postgame shows online. The NFL should take note.

Dead on. The price tag for the networks that will line up for the chance to spend a mint for the next round of TV negotiations will be crazy. The NFLN is already one of the, if not the, fastest growing cable channels in history. Very smart move to cut CBS out of the food chain.

Does this mean Time Warner Cable will be blocking NFL.com on it's internet service?
:lmao: I had no idea the NFL didn't run their own website. This should have happened a long time ago - not because of anything Sportsline did or didn't do but because the NFL seems so hands on and controlling of everything else. Will be interesting to see what this brings.

I agree. MFL's live scoring has been rock solid from the first kickoff at 1pm through the night games, while Sportsline dies often at the start of the 1pm and 4pm games.

Don't know what you're talking about there. I can watch all the NFL games/scores at about 30 seconds behind live as well as all the stats for all players on the NFL teams even if not on a fantasy roster. All with MFL Gameday. And I can also see all the stat leaders of the day or scoring leaders of the day. And much more.Plus you can have audio announcements like "San Diego is in the red zone" or "TOUCHDOWN! Jon Kitna 30 yard TD pass to Mike Furrey...Jason Hansen extra point..good." or "TOUCHDOWN! Reggie Bush 54 yard Punt Return TD."It can't be beat by anyone.

Roger Goodell was replaced by Lisa Baird, who came from IBM. She has come in with guns blazing, announcing she will be doubling the NFL's revenue in many areas. One thing however that won't change is that NFL Teams will continue to run their own internet retail. The NFL controls the NFL Shop thru a 3rd party (who the NFL jacked the royalties up for when re-upping in the last few months), but if you shop at a team's website it comes from the team and is under the team's control.Retail though is small potatoes compared to TV....small enough that the NFL probably does not want to manage all of it.

...which was only made available last week. Before that, you were stuck with their HTML-based interface which did NOT show NFL scores, did NOT allow you to track live stats in NFL games, and did NOT allow you to click on a player to go to his page.

WOW. Where are you getting your information? :bag: The MFL GameDay has been available all this season and most of last season. So almost 2 full seasons now. I'm not saying it's the best thing since sliced bread but lets get our facts straight. ;) :D

That's odd -- in our league we weren't told of GameDay until 2 weeks ago.Either way, their website interface is outdated.

Yeah not sure where that info came from. Its only our first year with MFL and its far better the sportsline. Not to mention this morning when i checked our scores they weren't all ties 0-0.Back to the main topic, what scares me most is in the future the NFL saying sites like MFL, sportsline etc etc can not run fantasy league sites using their player names and what not. I know the MLB talked about this and while I really think it each league would take a monster PR hit, I also believe in the power of the all mighty dollar.

I'm not talking about fantasy leagues. I'm talking about cbs's live game stats that you can watch real-time if you don't get the game on your local tv. http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/scoreboard Since CBS and NFL.com have a joint thing going with this, I can see the NFL telling CBS they can no longer use this feature, and the NFL charging for access to this. Currently, the CBS live game center is free, and if I'm not a member of MFL, I can't view live game stats.

Don't worry. The MLB lost that court case and have not appealed. The NFL won't jump in where they (MLB) failed. They like their cash but they ain't dumb.I think they are trying to cash in on FF though -- there are plenty of folks (newbs in particluar) who might go to a NFL.com sponsered sight just because it IS sponsered by the NFL. They can see the money to be made and will be staking a claim. But they won't sue their fans like baseball, which is essentially what happened in many people's minds. I wouldn't concern myself right now. I think this is actually a good thing -- rather than ignore or complain about FF (like baseball or like the music industry did with mp3 downloading) they are embracing it (like the entertainment industry is trying to do with movie and tv downloading on iTunes and such).

If the NFL does end up charging for the service, just order the internet only SIRIUS service and listen to the play-by-play that way.

You may not be talking about fantasy leagues but that is where this is headed. RealSports already did a piece on MLB and how they are taking steps to "trademark" their stats. The NFL could easily do this and to me this looks like they are headed that way.

You are dead on that NFL.com could very well start charging CBS for their realtime stats..... Either way I have a bad feeling about this. I think we are heading towards an FF climate where sites like FanBall, MFL, and Sportsline will be charged to use player names and stats; and that will raise the price of our leagues.

Did anybody else see that piece on Real Sports? They said MLB is SPECIFICALLY targeting fantasy baseball....interesting strategy....if they raise the price too much then less people will play fantasy sports and in turn watch less games...

*EDIT* Just saw NoFBinLA's post where MLB lost the court case.

Glad to hear MLB lost the case. I can already see Sportsline jacking the league price up to $200 next year :wall:

I could see this as one of the new changes with the NFL running its own website. From team to team, the websites are of different quality and have different features. (example not all have message board sand the moderation standards range widely).

I hollerred to a couple friends and apparently one has nothing to do with the other. I don't really understand and am waiting to hear back. It's supposedly all about contract and $. My friends would never ever want to work on NFL.com and think the scrutiny is way too high. I'll post more once I hear back again.Ya know NFLNetwork(really) has no website. I wonder if there's a sore spot there between NFL and CBS. It is kinda odd isn't it?

A wholeheartedly agree.. .and am here to tell you it will probably change. It's clean and "light". They will move up to some bandwith and more important processor-heavy applet with pointless roll overs, animation and over-the-top graphics.... On the flip side, they coudl easily push selected/highlight plays so you can see scores, turnovers...etc... much like that ESPN.com (ESPN HD) feature on their site. Otehrwise... Keep it simple stupids... you ahve a good thing going here.

that's not true. The NFL has other sites with ads and live scoring

:lmao:

First MFL didn't have as good a live scoring feature as CBS. Proven wrong by MFL GameDay (bonscott)

Second, since proven wrong, the rebuttal is they have only had MFL GameDay for a couple of weeks. Proven wrong again as it was available last season. (bonscott)

So when proven wrong on every point you reach again and say that their site is outdated... Seriously just admit when you are wrong.

Sorry to bump, but has anyone heard any updates on how things are going over at CBS? This is the time of year where The Commissioner is preparing the updates on the 07' season.

I wonder what CBS will bring to the table this year for new features. I think the launch date is mid June. I'm itching to start now!!!!

I was unaware of this thread before the bump. I really hope cbs still gets the live scoring and updates from the NFL feed. That's the best part of their system.

Not sure what CBS is doing since our league agreed to stay with MFL (we ran our league on both sites last year) by a 12-0 Vote. Oh and MFL is already up and running for the 07 season.

Are you sure about that? My league still has everything 06' up. There is no schedule posted for 07. Is this something the Commish has to do?

Yes. He has to click on the upgrade link he will see when he logs in. This will upgrade the site to 2007 where he can then take whatever additional steps may be required for your league setup. 2007 leagues have been available for a few weeks now....

No to continue the pseudo-hijack, but...

As a user of CBS for years for my fantasy league, I can tell you that MFL DOMINATES it. Even if they hypothetically cost the same (MFL charges half as much), MFL is still far superior. And I have been using the MFL live Gameday for 2 years now...

Yes - I updated to 07 about 3 weeks ago.

This is great news... information about an organization is is always better when it's written, produced, and distributed by the the same organization it's about.

I didn't bump this thread for a which site is better listing. I am in both, I know the benefits. Thanks for the update advice though.

ZAD have you used the Voice Version of the Game Day Live Scorer ? I love it, however it drives my wife & dogs up a wall. Every time that voice announces a score over my pc, the wife and dogs let out a big groan.

:banned: Yes, but I usually have the TV so loud I hear "somebody" in the other room so I rush to mute it to try to hear what happened. Thankfully, my wife doesn't mind.

We've been making trades since March 1st on our 2007 MFL League page.

Do you have a link to the Baird piece? I find this very interesting.

MLB gives you the option to watch every game live on the internet. Do you think we will eventually see something similar with the NFL? i refuse to switch over to DirectTV just for football, but would be happy to pay to watch all the games online.

I am a big believer in the on-demand model and think the NFL could do very well for themselves if they went that route.
