Falcons secondary decimated... (1 Viewer)

Coach Jim Mora said Thursday that CB Jason Webster will be out indefinitely after suffering a groin injury at practice Wednesday.

The Falcons' secondary is now a major mess, with CB Kevin Mathis out for the season. CB Jimmy Williams will move into the starting lineup and the Falcons will pray the first-round pick can provide some stability for a unit that has been crippled with injuries. Webster going down is a blessing in disguise. That guy is AWFUL. Jimmy Williams can't do any worse.

Kevin Mathis was the Falcons Nickle Back & Omar Lowe will probably get the call there.

What's been up with Crocker? That guy was a tackle machine in CLE and with as bad as ATL's defense is you'd think he'd have a ton of tackles. What gives?

He's playing just fine, but is in a different D scheme than what Cleveland runs & he's fighting over tackles with Milloy.

Cut their D this week. Just way, way too many injuries. They still may do well against CLE at home, but it's not a lock.

:goodposting: Agree.....the 2 tech boys will feed off each other and bolster the secondary! Webster gets burned often.

DeAngelo Hall's banged up too. From RotoWorld:

DeAngelo Hall was added to the injury report as questionable with a hamstring injury.

Yikes. The Falcons may have to drag Deion Sanders out of retirement. They've lost Kevin Mathis and Jason Webster, and now their two starters (Hall and Jimmy Williams) are questionable to play. Upgrade those Browns!

Does this have any effect on what people are expecting for Braylon Edwards this week?

<insert obligatory "nothing" joke here>

Here are the questions about the Falcons defense that cam eup in the Press Conference:

Q: Opening statement

Mora: Let's update the injury report. It is the same as yesterday with the addition of DeAngelo Hall and Jimmy Williams going to questionable with a hamstring for D-Hall and an ankle for Jimmy. Jason Webster is out for an extended period of time. It could be a month, it could be more. He had a severe groin injury yesterday. He got an MRI last night and it showed up. It is a war of attrition in the NFL and right now we are struggling at one spot, the secondary. Maybe we can get some guys to rally and move on.

Q: What is your plan in the secondary?

Mora: It was Jimmy. He tweaked his ankle so we will have to wait and see how it is tomorrow. We have some guys; Omare Lowe and Allen Rossum, but when you lose two of your top five defensive backs in one week it is a little bit of a blow. You just go on, you have to go on. I am pretty sure they are not going to cancel the game on Sunday. We will be there.

Q: Both teams have a lot of injuries...

Mora: Yeah, as you all know we have Edgerton Hartwell, John Abraham, Kynan Forney, Kevin Mathis and Brian Finneran, the list goes on and on. There is a pretty long list of guys. It is what it is, but like we have talked about yesterday, we have depth at some positions, unfortunately we don't have a whole lot of depth in the secondary and that is where we are taking our hits. We will be alright. I was talking with Michael Boley today and I told him I had been in a situation like this in 2002. We used Julian Peterson to play corner and safety against the Cowboys and beat them to put us in the playoffs. You just have to go play. I guarantee you Romeo Crennel is not feeling sorry for us.

Q: Is Boley an option back there?

Mora: You never know. We will get him ready. Like we talked about in the offseason before we signed Lawyer Milloy, he was an option we had discussed.

Q: What about Demorrio Williams?

Mora: No, not Demorrio, he is more of a linebacker. You are not going to see that this Sunday.

Q: What about Ashley Ambrose?

Mora: I don't know if he could get more than one play in. With our secondary coaches; Brett Maxie, Emmitt Thomas and Ashley Ambrose, we have about 150 interceptions. Maybe we could rotate them through.

Q: What can you do to create a pass rush?

Mora: The turf toe has been bothering Rod Coleman. He feels a little better this week. He has been playing through it. To ask him to get lean and push has been tough. It has just been a struggle to get pressure with a four-man rush. Without Abraham and with Rod being hurt it has been tough. Those things take there toll. Like I said, guys are Pro Bowlers for a reason and guys are back ups for a reason, but the back ups have to step up and do the best they can and they have been. Josh Mallard is really coming on. Patrick is always fighting. He always gives you great effort and sacks. I think Rod is coming back and feeling better. We will mix it up and play a little zone and hopefully someone can win one-on-one. We have to just piece it together and go.

It sure can't hurt him. I wouldn't expect Droughns to do much again so the Browns will probably be throwing a lot. Edwards looked good again last week and I think he's a real strong WR3 play this week. And Big Score, Williams has an ankle injury.

Trying to decide between the Falcons, Panthers and Giants as my defense this week. :wall:
No contest. Panthers against the Bucs. :banned:

Definitely leaning that way, but Gradkowski has been better than expected and the Panthers have been a very mediocre defense in my league (#24 overall).
