Chiefs :: TE, OL

TE Gonzalez, OG Waters Practice, May Play

Elizabeth Merrill, Kansas City Star - [Full Article]

As the media presence multiplied Tuesday, Pro Bowlers TE Tony Gonzalez and OG Brian Waters quietly returned to practice. Behold the power of a big game. At least that’s the way HC Herm Edwards saw it when Waters hit the field Tuesday morning. Gonzalez’s appearance was somewhat of a surprise, too. He sprained his shoulder at Miami on Nov. 12, hurt it so bad he couldn’t take his shirt off after the game. He pulled on his No. 88 jersey Tuesday and caught passes. He is expected to be a game-time decision.

Nip for Tuesday news watch... :blackdot:

Seeing as this is a nationally televised game and Gonzo is in a contract year, my money is that he plays. Now will he be any good, that is the question.

His career games vs. Denver have not been very good. SSOG had a thread about this before the first matchup.2006 2-7-02005 5-29-0 1-25-12004 2-17-0 3-44-0I only went back the past three seasons since that's when Bailey has been with Denver. Prior to that, he had over 55 yards receiving in three of his first four games against the Broncos. Since Bailey arrived, Gonzalez hasn't come close to that level.

Herm Edwards Press Conference - 11/20

Nov 20, 2006, 6:15:54 PM

VIDEO: Real | Windows | Audio

HERM EDWARDS: “Obviously, it’s a short week for everybody. But I think it’s a great opportunity for the National Football League and especially for Lamar Hunt to have this Thanksgiving game come to fruition. He’s been kind of hammering the table about it and they finally figured out if you’re going to do it for anybody you do it for Lamar Hunt. He’s well deserving to have this game.

“You have a short recovery time for your players. You don’t get much rest as a staff. But I think once you walk on that field Thursday night you’ll feel the adrenaline of playing in a Thanksgiving Day game that the NFL Network is covering. That’s a first and there are a lot of firsts in this game.

“That being said, there is a lot that goes into this game. You have players and coaches mentally trying to grasp what we want to do offensively, defensively and special teams going into this game. It’s that way for both teams.

“I told our players that basically it boils down to this: it’s the team that mentally grasps the game plan and doesn’t make a bunch of mental errors because you don’t have preparation and time. Players like short weeks because they don’t have to practice that much, but it’ll be a mental load for everybody.”

Q: What’s the latest with the injured guys: Brian Waters, Tony Gonzalez, and Derrick Johnson?

EDWARDS: “Right now, we had a walk through and they made it through. So, that’s one step. It was kind of a fast walk, so that’s good. We’ll see tomorrow. I anticipate some of those guys will be back but what their status is at this point, I really don’t know. I anticipate they’ll going to play but I’ll know more once we get on the practice field.”

Q: Anybody you’ve ruled out?

EDWARDS: “No, no one, haven’t ruled anybody out.”

Q: Do you see a different type of game than the first one you played up in Denver?

EDWARDS: “Oh, the first one where it was a baseball score. Obviously, it’ll be a little bit different for us. We’re playing at home; we’re still playing against a very good team with a very good defense. What they do is they don’t allow a lot of points. They do a good job of taking the ball away. They can run the ball very, very well on offense and the quarterback is a waggle-and-boot guy, and they have some veteran receivers that are playing pretty well and some excellent runners.

“Yeah, I would anticipate it’ll be a little bit different.”

Q: That run/pass balance yesterday is something you probably wouldn’t like Thursday. How much of that was protecting your quarterback making his first start in a while?

EDWARDS: “I don’t now if it was so much protecting Trent. It was more looking at what we could do to be successful against them. Some of it was to get Trent going and not to put it all on his shoulders. Really, it was to get the running game going again because we kind of lost sight of that last week, I thought.

“We went into the game feeling we had some runs we could achieve and get some yards. Then we got going on the one drive and kept running. There’s nothing wrong with that. The whole game we never lost track of that even when we got behind. But then I thought after the game got going and Trent got real familiar and comfortable in the pocket, I thought at the end it was good to see him when we had to go down on a drive that he orchestrated. He made some good throws; we made some good catches and we blocked them pretty well.”

Q: Without Gonzalez, did that alter what you thought you could do in the passing game?

EDWARDS: “It takes away a weapon that has been very good for us. Not so much for Trent because Trent hadn’t played with him. He played one half for him. It was good for our team to get Tony involved. But when you take a guy like that out of your offense it’s a little tougher. But for the most part we were able to runt the ball well. It helped our play action, it helped us really take advantage of situations when we had to throw the ball.”

Q: Do you think nine points will be enough this time?

EDWARDS: “No, I don’t think so. I don’t think field goals – my favorite deal – won’t work this week.”

Q: Being a former defensive player and you were watching those missed tackles and sacks by your team, what were you thinking?

EDWARDS: “First thing you say is we’re not wrapping up and the second thing you say is we’ve got to get it corrected if we’re going to win. I thought the second half we played a lot better; we tackled better. We didn’t get the quarterback down, but we tackled better. That’s what the game is about on defense. If you don’t tackle well and you miss opportunities to sack the quarterback, then all of a sudden the quarterback and a guy like (Brooks) gains more confidence when you can’t get him down. He’s moving and running and throwing where, if you get him early and you sack him, his accuracy is not as good. That’s what sort of happened the first half.”

Q: You could see that possibly with Jake Plummer and the bootleg this week?

EDWARDS: “Yeah, if we can’t tackle him he’ll get outside and he’ll make some plays ‘cause he can do that with his legs and he has a good enough arm to get the ball down the field. I thought the first time we played I thought we handled the boot fairly well. But that was the first game, and that’s all I heard of when I first took the job. That wasn’t a big factor and last night he didn’t run a lot of boots. So that being said, this will probably be the week he runs a lot of boots.”

Q: What about Kyle Turley going in as a tight end? How did he grade out?

EDWARDS: “He did a good job at the tight end position and that was a formation and personnel group we wanted to use to run the ball. We felt we had some big people over there where we could get some push. He did a good job and is feeling good now and he was into the game yesterday. He was into ball and you could see it in his eyes as he came off the field. I think he was more excited about playing the tight end position where he might actually get a pass. I told him you aren’t ready for that yet.”

Q: He catches everything in practice?

EDWARDS: “They all catch them in practice.”

Q: The schedule makers didn’t do the Broncos any favors having to play on a short week after a night game. As a head coach and you were the Broncos how would you prepare your team to come back that fast especially after playing a tough game against a division rival?

EDWARDS: “Really, when you think about it the travel’s not that far. When you really think of a schedule like this you can look at it two ways. You can say, ‘well, we’ve got to travel but then when we get there we have to stay in a hotel on Thanksgiving Day, but what are the Chiefs going to do? Are they staying in a hotel?’ Yeah, we’re staying in a hotel, but Denver doesn’t have family and guests in Kansas City. Our team has family and guests and that’s what you have to make your players understand. Now is not the time to worry about family and the guests at home. It’s time to stay in a hotel and really prepare yourself mentally.

“But the travel is not that far for them. That’s the key. If they were travleling three of four hours that would be a tough deal. That would be difficult. But these guys have won a lot of football games and are a mentally tough football team and that’s how you win on the road like they do.”

Q: Can you talk about the playoff implications of this game and how big a win this game would be for your team?

EDWARDS: “Every game from here on out – and I said last week that this is a seven game season and the more you can win you stay in the race. That’s the whole key to November. That’s moving month in our league. If you win in November you generally have a great opportunity to participate in the playoffs because it gives you momentum going into December. You know that, that’s historically how it works in this league. November is a big month. You want your team playing well.

“Games become a lot tighter, too, the later part of the year. Teams that maybe weren’t playing as well early get better, injuries become a big factor in November and December. All of a sudden, you get a key two or three guys hurt and that affects how you play. All those things in November when you get into weeks nine and 10 become very competitive. I think teams have a familiarity with who they are; they identify what kind of team they are by then.

“Teams get better and all of a sudden you see some teams winning games in a row. When you’re a head coach and you didn’t start off the season too well you want to finish it off well to build momentum for next year. So, you catch some teams that didn’t have a good record the first eight (games) they all of a sudden get on a little roll. People look at it and say they haven’t won a lot of games but when you watch them on tape, like the Raiders, they play pretty good, play pretty good defense.”

Q: Did you watch the game last night and what did you think?

EDWARDS: “I thought it was an entertaining game. San Diego came back in the fourth quarter.”

Q: Were you surprised that Denver playing at home gave up that big lead like they did?

EDWARDS: “It was kind of like our game. That’s what the Chargers have done the last couple of weeks in the fourth quarter. They’ve come running back and for three weeks they’ve come back. It’s a credit to them; it’s a credit to Marty. They believe they can do that; that’s the whole key.

“Now, they believe they can come back and win in the fourth quarter and that’s what I was telling our football team today. We’ve played actually seven games that in the fourth quarter the game was in the balance and we’ve won five out of those seven. That’s why we’re in the spot we’re in right now because when you continue to play and play fairly well and keep the points down it’s a pretty even game and it’s going to get down to the fourth quarter. The teams that win in the fourth quarter generally continue to play when the season’s over.”

He never does well against Denver when he is healthy.
That's because Eddie Kennison is normally running down the sideline for big catches and Larry Johnson is running over the Broncos.Besides, didn't they say that about Tomlinson?Regardless, I just hope Gonzalez wears a knee brace, along with every other Chief.

Tuesday update from RotoWorld:

TE Tony Gonzalez (shoulder) missed practice Tuesday and is listed as questionable.

Gonzalez participated in the Chiefs' walkthrough Monday, although this still may not exactly qualify as a setback. He looks like a game-time decision in Week 12.

Looks like Gonzalez did practice today. From KFFL:

Chiefs | Gonzalez practices, expected to play Week 12

Tue, 21 Nov 2006 14:02:19 -0800

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez (shoulder) practiced Tuesday, Nov. 21, and is expected to play in Week 12.

From kcchiefs.com

“Injury-wise update: Derrick Johnson’s still questionable, Tony Gonzalez is questionable. Other than that, I think everybody else is pretty much ready to go.”

Q: I saw Tony (Gonzalez) and Brian (Waters) do some work, but how much did they do?

EDWARDS: “They’re questionable. Brian I anticipate him playing. Tony is questionable.”

Q: Is that questionable with a wink?

EDWARDS: “It’s questionable on the form. It says questionable, doubtful, out. There’s no maybe on there.”

That's what Herm said so it looks like Gonzo participated in parts of practice. Herm had a wry smile and it appears to me that he will play.

From Mort's chat today:

DJ Cuse: What is the status for Tony Gonzalez for tomorrow night?

SportsNation Chris Mortensen: (12:04 PM ET ) He is supposed to play.

This is from John Clayton's blog today: "Gonzalez, meanwhile, is a little more iffy. He only got in limited work because of his sore shoulder. He's pushing Edwards to play him, and most likely the coach will let him as long as Gonzalez does not have a setback."

Nice of ESPN to cover all the bases. Both use weasel words ("supposed to", "iffy") but one with a positive spin and the other with a negative spin.

Wednesday update from RotoWorld:

Tony Gonzalez (questionable, shoulder) missed at least a portion of practice Wednesday.

He's expected to try to play Thursday, although he's officially a game-time decision. We'd use him in fantasy leagues if he starts.

Gonzo's status gives me pause to start Kennison.

Even with Champ in Denver, Kennison has carved up the Broncos with multiple 100 yard games (save for this season's game in Denver).

If Gonzo is out, do we automatically assume Champ draws Kennison as his assignment?

Bailey hasn't been locking up one WR this season. Instead, he has remained on one side of the field and covered whichever player lined up on that side. The Bronco LBs are so good Bailey hasn't had to follow one WR around - he can simply remain on the left side and essentially remove one/half of the field from the opponent's passing game.

HERM EDWARDS: “Injury-wise most of our guys are going to play. I think the guys like this atmosphere and getting well, too. I think they understand the type of game that this is going to be. It’s a division opponent, a big game for both football teams. I know Denver’s played in a lot of games like this, where they’ve been in big games at this time of the season. That’s what we have to learn as a football team, in my estimation.

“We have to learn how to play in situations like this. I think this is good for you. It makes you pick it up a notch as a player and that’s always good. You have to hit that second gear in the season where you say, ‘OK, this is one of those kinds of games where you have to be at your best mentally, not so much physically.’ The mental part in a short week is very, very important. You don’t want to make errors because generally if it’s a tight game you hate for an error to be the big play in the game.

“Then as a staff we have to be able to adjust as this game is being played because this being a short week there might be some wrinkles they put in that we didn’t see. Players have to be able to adjust and coaches have to adjust and if you can do that – keep your calm and your poise – you have a great chance of being successful.”

Q: We’ve asked the players how they’re feeling in a short week, how about you?

EDWARDS: “I really like it. I like games like this, I really do. This is what this thing’s about. You want to be in games like this during the season especially in November and December. It sets a great platform if you’re going to try and be a playoff team or win a division. You have to understand that you have to win these types of games. I liked playing them as a player and I like coaching them. I just think it’s a lot of fun. You don’t have to give them any pep talk to get your players ready. They understand that.

“You just have to be focused; you have to be a focused team. I think the more you get into this environment and get into this environment and win you gain more confidence.”

Q: Do you like the short week as a coach?

EDWARDS: “Ah, I do because of this: you can’t add a lot of things and I think that’s a good thing at the end of the season. You don’t need to add a lot of things and with this situation it gives you some days to rest after. You look after the game and it’s almost like having two byes. And, it can help you ‘cause we’ve got some guys that are nicked that are going to play but it gets you over the hump. It’s a good mental deal when you get done with it; now, it is a bit of a mental strain to play the game and it’s always better when you win ‘cause you win it you really feel good.”

Q: How do you tell your younger players to handle all that adrenaline they’ll wake up with tomorrow?

EDWARDS: “The thing you want to do is stay off your feet and players are restless. You’re waiting around, have some meetings, but the good thing is there are some games on before ours. They’ll watch some games and from there as the second is ready to start you’ll be somewhere around the stadium at that point in time.

“It’s good in one sense because you’ll be able to watch some other guys play. You see and know there will be a lot of people watching you and you want to perform well. But you have to handle your time between today and tomorrow night in a manner where you’ll get rest.

“This is tough on players who live here because there are probably a lot of family and guests coming for Thanksgiving and that’s why we’re staying at the hotel like we always do and we’re going to stay around that hotel tomorrow, too. I told them you don’t need to go home; you don’t need to do all that stuff. Let other people do that; you have a game to play. I think the players understand that.”

Q: You talked earlier about Lamar Hunt and how important this game is for him. Do you sense this is a special game?

EDWARDS: “I think it is because Lamar is a great sportsman. He’s done a lot for this league and is the founder of this franchise. He doesn’t get a lot of credit for the things that he’s accomplished as an owner in this league. He doesn’t want it that way either, and that’s Lamar. But this is something he wanted to bring to Kansas City for the fans and not so much for him. It’s for the fans that have followed the Chiefs over the years. He knows how big of a game this is. This is sort of a unique atmosphere to play in. I think it showcases the stadium; it showcases the fans and how this stadium is a special place to play. A lot of people don’t realize that unless they’ve been here and seen games played here.”

Q: What’s your memory as a player and having seen Thanksgiving Day games as a kid?

EDWARDS: “You used to watch Thanksgiving and it was Detroit when I was growing up and then it went to Dallas. There was only one at the beginning and you knew the Lions were going to play and generally when I was in the league you always looked at your schedule and figured out if you were playing Detroit. It didn’t matter what your record was you were in trouble going to Detroit playing on Thanksgiving Day. Traditionally it’s unique because it’s on a day when all the families are together. If you’re not playing all the players are off and everyone watches you. It makes the turkey taste a lot of better if you can win.”

Q: How nice is it to be at home playing in front of your fans?

EDWARDS: “It’s always good to be in Arrowhead, no doubt about it. If you have a home field and you feel you have a mental advantage – and we feel like we have a twelfth person here with our fans – it’s exciting. They’ll be excited at the beginning but we’ve got to keep them excited. It’ll be electric and we’ve got a lot of things going on. They’re turning the lights on (at the Plaza) that night; they’ve got a football game going; they’re eating turkey and they’ll probably be barbecuing turkey in the parking lot. They’re doing it all. It’ll be a fun spot to be.”

Q: The last time you played Denver Trent Green watched the game at home. Later he said he diagrammed some exotic plays. Have you been able to use any of them at all?

EDWARDS: “He probably threw those away since then. I think he’s excited to be back again and playing another one at home. He’s played in a lot of these games and it’s always good to be playing a playoff football team because then you can measure up and see where you’re at – see if you’re catching up. But I think our team will enjoy playing.”

Q: Are you finally getting over the injury bug hump now?

EDWARDS: “Right now we’re finally getting some guys well. That’s the key and a credit to the guys who had to step in for the guys who got nicked.”

Good job by the Chiefs reporters not to ask a single question about how Gonzalez has looked at practice this week. Not like he's an important player. Hell, they could've asked why Denver has had so much success against Gonzalez if Edwards had some things in mind to counter it - anything to get some insight into whether Gonzalez is going to play and how effective he may be.

But hey, at least they got in that "how's it feel to be playing at home" question.

From Sportsnetwork.com:

Gonzalez active against Denver

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez is active and will start Thursday night's game against the Denver Broncos.
