Braylon Edwards Going Forward (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Last week he called out a teammate and the coaching staff. The result was 0 passes thrown to him in the first half of the game against the Bengals and only 2 receptions against a horrible pass defense. He then got into a sideline altercation with his QB - probably the one guy on the team you don't want to p**s off.

If the first half of yesterday's game is any indication it would seem Edwards felt some consequences of running his mouth last week about the playcalling. So now that he's gone off on his QB, will he feel even more?

What do folks here think?

as a Braylon owner and a guy who liked him at Michigan.. this temper tantrum was really disheartening.. I know guys don't like to lose especially when coming from college situations when they play in a top program.. but this will not win him any fans.

with that said.. there are plenty of receivers who do this.. so maybe this will be OK

Perhaps. Oftentimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that. But I definitely think the coaching staff was sending Edwards a message in the first half yesterday. After all, there's no other way to explain 0 targets for your No. 1 WR against a horrible pass defense in a game where you had to throw a lot. I suppose the Bengals could have really clamped down on him but to not even throw 1 pass his way for an entire half? And then come right out in the third quarter and look to him? That smelled to me like a message was being delivered. Whether it was the smart thing to do is another question. But if a message was being sent, one has to wonder if Edwards going off on his QB will lead to something further.Like you, I'm a Braylon owner and I've been a fan of his since his college days and it was disheartening to see him go off on Frye like that. But given how this is a team going nowhere I wonder if Romeo will try to make an example out of Edwards either directly or (as I believe was the case in the first half yesterday) indirectly.

WR Edwards Criticizing Offensive Line, Not QB Frye

Fred Greetham, Scout.com, - [Full Article]

Television cameras caught Browns WR Braylon Edwards grabbing the jersey of QB Charlie Frye and the frenzy immediately became another battle between a hot-headed receiver and his quarterback. But Edwards was actually chastising the offensive line for its lack of protection, noting all of the dirt on the back of Frye's jersey. HC Romeo Crennel is not a fan of Edwards' outburst, no matter who it was aimed at. “We’re going to talk to Braylon because we think he can be a productive leader on this team,” he said.

From Pro Football Weekly's "Whispers" Section:

There is a sense around the Browns that WR Braylon Edwards has been a little too vocal of late. Last week, Edwards criticized teammate Brian Russell for his hit on Bengals WR Chad Johnson in Cincinnati’s 34-17 Week Two win. He also criticized the team’s play-calling in the red zone. Edwards and QB Charlie Frye got into an apparent argument during Cleveland’s 30-0 loss to Cincinnati in Week 12. Head coach Romeo Crennel believes Edwards has a lot of growing up to do. Said Crennel: “I think he’s going to be a good team guy. I had experience with a guy (Keyshawn Johnson) in New York during his rookie year. I think he wrote a book titled “Just Give Me the Damn Ball!” Braylon could probably write a sequel to that one. That guy turned out to be a good receiver and team player. Hopefully, we’ll get Braylon on the right track and make him a productive guy for this team.”

More chatter from Edwards. I like this guy but I think he needs to shut the hell up and just play.

From KFFL:

Browns | Edwards says team lacks passion

Tue, 28 Nov 2006 08:50:26 -0800

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards says certain players on the team lack the passion necessary to be successful. "If you're losing close games and you feel like you're giving everything, that's one thing," Edwards said. "But when you're just flat out not playing, that's another. That's something that a lot of guys around here don't like. But not every guy feels that way… Obviously not everybody feels that way. As a whole, I think we need to show more passion. That's just real. I don't believe I'm throwing anybody under the bus by saying that."

He speaketh the truth...the team can point fingers at Edwards, or man up and earn their paycheck...

temporary blip. Like most good wr's he's seems to have the fire/desire that it takes. He's going to be a very good wr.

Why? I don't get that at all. Maybe he can light a fire that obviously isn't there. To put up 0 points against a pretty bad Cincy defense is pitiful. The fact that well into the game, their best WR threat had no targets against a defense which gave up 500+ yards to Brees is awful.Willie Parker said the same thing a few weeks ago and it seemed to help the Steelers until this week when a clearly better team outclassed them.I have no problem with what Edwards said. If he feels that people on his team are not trying to win every game and he is, then I see no issue with him calling them out. This is not like Randy Moss on the Raiders where he is saying that he is not going all out, this is a guy who is going all out and sees other guys on his team not going all out.It may be taboo, but I guess to me, that is a guy trying to right a sinking ship which is what Cleveland has been for a while. Maybe he will end up being a TO cancer, but it seems like he is trying to win more than trying to be a ####.

nothing wrong with this, he didn't single anyone out by name and basically spoke the truth.

Well, he definitely speaks the truth in what he says (O-line not doing their job, team appears to lack the drive, etc.). But even as a Michigan fan, and Edwards fan, I would say that he needs to keep it internal, and not air it out publically. I say the same thing about even the most outspoken (a la TO, Moss, etc.).

Agreed. I'm not disputing anything Edwards is saying here. But he's been running his mouth a lot lately and I think he needs to do more playing than talking. And I think it's best to keep these types of things in-house.

 Until it seems like the decided to not use him much on Sunday (which helped them on their way to 0 points against Cincy who averaged giving up 23 ppg before that), he was starting to do well again. He had 16 receptions for 229 yards and 2 TDs in the last 3 weeks which included a last second loss to Pittsburgh, a win against Atlanta and a 7 point loss to SD where they had the lead most of the game. A wee bit better results than a 30-0 stomping.Edwards probably still isn't 100%, but I think he has had a pretty good season based on how soon he came back from the 2005 season ending injury and the fact that this is only his second year. This past weekend was only his 21st game and 17th start.

No question. I'm in full agreement. But as I said in my initial post I strongly believe that Edwards going off on the coaching staff last week led Romeo to freeze him out in the first half against the Bengals. And if he keeps yapping, it's unlikely that's going to sit well with the coaching staff - regardless of whether his comments are on the mark or not. In fact, there have been two more news items posted in this thread which say the coaching staff is not happy with Edwards talking so much. So this isn't a question of whether he's talented or whether he's generally been productive this season. He definitely is and he certainly has been. This is a question of whether his constant criticisms of the coaches and/or other players is going to have some consequences. I'm speculating that it did in Week 12. And I'm wondering if anything else could happen if Edwards doesn't shut up anytime soon. That's why I think it's in his best interests to just shut up and play.

I gotcha. Well if Romeo and the coaching staff did actually freeze him out only to put him in later because they were getting killed, then they are dumbasses. Either make an example of him and make him inactive or fine him and use him. They got thrashed 30-0 and did nothing offensively because they fell behind so much that Cincy knew that they could sell out against the pass. Sounds to me like a dumb decision that they retreated from since he played in the game.ETA: Hmmm, wasn't trying to circumvent the language filter. I figured that would be caught. Ooops.

I personally have no problem with his calling underperforming players out. Granted, I've been a Braylon fan for awhile now, so maybe I'm biased, but he spoke the truth, and is showing heart. We don't know that he hasn't spoken up internally before now, I tend to think he probably has. As long as he performs, there's no problem with him speaking out.

i can understand Braylon being frustrated

I am a Browns fan

I just wish Edwards would man when he plays lousy also

a few INT of Frye were because Braylon didn't catch the ball that hit him in the hands

he also drops too many passes that hit him in the hands

i have no problem with being firey at under-preforming teammates, but some games HE was the problem and we heard nothing

The Braylon Drama continues. From RotoWorld:

Browns coach Romeo Crennel responded "No Comment" when asked Wednesday whether Braylon Edwards will start Sunday vs. Kansas City.

Edwards showed up late to a team meeting after flying to the Ohio State-Michigan game and was caught on camera jawing with and grabbing the jersey of Charlie Frye last Sunday. Edwards was angry at the offensive line. The Browns' flagship radio station reported Tuesday that Crennel will be fired if the team comes out with another clunker versus the Chiefs, which we find hard to believe.

Source: Cleveland Plain Dealer

Braylon has some growing up to do.. that is for sure.

I wonder if he'll be extra motivated to show something this week or if Crennel punishes him (he's got every right to do so IMO) with less playing time, less looks, losing starting job etc. etc.

also be interesting to see how Frye reacts

Moss will have a good week. I grabbed him off the WW for THIS WEEK ONLY. They will beat Hou at home, and we'll get one Brooks to Moss TD at least. This is a great week to take a shot w/Moss.
