Chicago
Everyone around the NFL is worried about the Bears’ run defense … that is, except for the Bears themselves. Chicago is well aware that it has given up an average of 126.2 rushing yards per game over their last five contests. And it is repeatedly reminded that its drop-off coincided with the loss of defensive captain and Pro Bowl SS Mike Brown. With Brown on the field, the Bears allowed just 74.5 rushing yards per game, but the way we hear it, they do not view this sudden lack of resistance as a problem. In fact, we’re told the Bears are more than willing to trade 100 rushing yards if it means they will continue holding opponents to fewer than 300 total yards — which had been the case in every contest this season until the Week 12 defeat at New England, when they gave up only 85 rushing yards but 354 total yards. In addition, we hear the Bears have accepted that they will give up some ground in the running game early in games before they make their regular adjustments and lock it down late. For example, the Jets managed 91 rushing yards in the first half alone in their Week 11 meeting, but the Bears limited them to just 17 yards in the second half despite a narrow Chicago lead on the scoreboard.
