They were talking about this on ESPN at earlier in the week and then discussed it in more detail on todays sportscenter and NFL countdown. That was at 10 am this morning.

fyi - the rumor on the miami board about the 10 year contract. wrong and impossible. some state law here in bama ( i don't know the specifics) that states the contract cannot be longer than 7 years.

well, first since the RRod debacle.Trust me, he's coming.
Hi Tat,Two questions:1. Nick Saban?2. How do you know this?Would be a huge coup if they get him.J
This morning they (ESPN and Anderson) were talking about an offer of a 10 year $30-40 million contract. He also said that Saban has already stated that he would not run out on the Dolphins so that him accepting this deal was "not likely", at least at this time for next season.

For sure. I was wondering what kind of information that Tat had that would make him confident this would happen. J

Friends very close to the inner-workings of Bama Athletics. They knew what day/time Shula would be fired. They should be right on about this, but we will have to wait until 2007......

Shula= :kicksrock:Rodriguez= :D Saban= :popcorn:
You were a Shula fan, happy to see Rod not sign, and are waiting anxiously on Saban? Trying to get my smilies reading comprehension down.
Well...it works for my thoughts and their current thoughts as well.Theirs:Shula's unemployed, Rodriguez is happy where he is and Saban is just sitting back watching the media frenzy.Mine:Shula was a decent coach, but should have been given another year to work with the team, mainly offense.Rodriguez, well...I'm happy he didn't go to Bama, I'd rather see someone else in that role.Saban, I'm waiting to see if he comments on it. If he doesn't then there is something up.

Hi tat,I can understand knowing the Shula thing. That was a 1 way decision. This one takes two parties.Obviously the inner workings Alabama folks would love to have Saban. But you're saying that it's a mutual love and Saban has agreed to be the coach? And they'll have to wait until after the NFL season is over to announce?J

Hey Joe -

No one has "agreed" to anything, and NO ONE knows for sure what will happen.

But...

There has OBVIOUSLY been interest shown by someone in the SABAN CAMP....maybe Saban, maybe his agent Sexton, maybe someone else. There has just been too much smoke on this to say that there is no fire. I also know people close to the school and who work with Jimmy Sexton in Memphis, and they threw his name out as showing interest well before anyone in Alabama ever mentioned it....in October.

Could be just an agent being an agent...could be nothing more than Saban pi$$ed about starting 1-6...could be nothing....could be something.

To just blow it off as just wishful thinking on Alabama's part though is a far off as people saying it will happen.

Here is another interesting article from Lindy's:

The Nick Saban situation is a little different. There was enough interest there that some figures were tossed out to a Saban representative, but don't believe that $5 million a year fantasy created by The Miami Herald

Shula WAS a decent coach?? He was in WAY over his head. Opposing teams thought he was a GREAT coach!! Ever see him on the sidelines before a big call?? Completely dumbfounded and unsure of what to do. Not a good coach, but a great man and I disagree with HOW he was let go, not that he was let go.

here's the thing ablut saban: He has an Ego. If he were to leave Miami before getting them back to the playoffs (at least) would be a knock on him in the pros that he is just another one of those college guys that can't hack it in the NFL. A guy with Saban's ego would never allow that, even for an extra mil or two a year.

If Saban isn't the coach by Jan 2, 2007, I will send you Dreamland Ribs and sauce.

And you'll send Tat a Bryant boat if Saban is the Bama coach by then? ;)

here's the thing ablut saban: He has an Ego. A guy with Saban's ego would never allow that, even for an extra mil or two a year.
I agree Gator....but, $$ is not what "reportedly" is driving Saban to think about going back to college. "Supposedly" neither he or his wife care much for the area (which wouldn't be surprising considering where they are from). And let's be honest...while the Dolphins are a great brand and a well-known, proud franchise...Miami is possibly the worst sports town in America.

I wonder how his wife will enjoy Tuscaloosa after they lose to Auburn?

At least they care about their team in Ttown. I was in Miami last week and the first hour of a LOCAL sports show, hosted by a native New Yorker, was entirely spent talking about the New York Giants, and including about 20 phone calls from local "fans".

:fishing:
I wasn't fishing...but I guess there are different ways to define "sports town". I personally look at things like Merchandise sales of local teams and game attendance. Miami is one of the worst "sports towns in America" in that regard. And in relation to the point...you won't hear an hour conversation about another team in New York, Philly, Green Bay, or even Tampa....and certainly not in South Bend, Baton Rouge or Tuscaloosa.

While I agree Miami sucks, Atlanta has it beat.

I wouldn't say worst sportstown, but probably the most fickle. Most people who live here are from somewhere else, and many of those keep their home town alligences. You probably heard the sid rosenberg show which is totally geared towards the transplanted NYers who live here.As for not caring much for the area, they live in Bland old Broward so I can see why they would be a little less than enthused about strip malls on every other block and bad traffic.I don't see him leaving, but that being said, if he does guys like Fisher, Parcells, or Cower would make Miamians forget about saban real fast.

That's the other option. Both cities are comparable in size. The following for the Braves, Falcons, Hawks, and Thrashers is comparable to the following for the Marlins, Dolphins, Heat, and Panthers. But the major difference I think is the passion for college sports that gives Atlanta a slight edge.

Here are the latest rankings by school:

Certainly UGA gets a lot of it's sales from small GA, FL, and AL towns around...but Miami also gets a lot from sales outside of the area...including up to Tally...mainly because of the it's brand...the "U". I sell college product to both areas...and believe me there is no comparison.

Well, that denial sure didn't slow things down around here lately. Rumors now starting to pop up about him calling around about staff:

Clements (QB coach at Green Bay) as possible OC

Tony Nathan coming with him as RB's coach

Kirby Smart at DC

In a week, I'm sure I'll be on pins and needles prepared for a let-down. Still just praying it's not Paul Johnson.

For all the ESPN guys like Colin Cowherd talking about how irrelevant Alabama is, they sure do talk about this coaching search a lot.

christ. the Pack might as well start over again.

"Former Dolphins coach Don Shula, whose son, Mike, was fired last month by the Crimson Tide, said his feelings about Alabama were "bad" and said he hopes Saban stays.

"Nick is working for the Dolphins and he's committed to this job," Shula said. "I think that coaches always want to keep the door open, but I believe Nick was hired to do a job and he has a lot of respect for Wayne and the organization."
