Raiders are on the Clock (1 Viewer)

The Lions held on. If my reading of the standings is right, the Raiders are now on the clock. Here's to hoping that following:

1 - Al Davis drops dead.

2 - Art Shell leaves town.

3 - Raiders trade Randy Moss to a near contender (maybe Atlanta??).

4 - Raiders trade Jerry Porter to anywhere.

5 - The new decision makers in Oakland trade down from 1.01 for multiple picks. I'm going to freak out if they draft Brady Quinn. They could use a real back, but there's so many other things wrong that one back won't change things. Maybe trade down to early-mid or mid 1st round and gamble for Lynch or Peterson (although I'm guessing they're both gone by 1.10).

I'm extremely pedestrian at these pre-draft predictions. I'm just giving a gut reaction based on the general obscenity that has been 2006 Oakland Raider football.

Gotta think they draft AP, but it could be a draft and trade down to a team that takes Quinn.

Thank you Lions!!!

I want one of our 7,000 other needs addressed with the 1.01 pick (or a trade down)....

then come back with Troy Smith in the 2nd. :lmao:

Who do you think they'll take?

Sebastian Janikowski is getting up there in age. It's never too early to draft a kicker in the first round in Al Davis's world.

I have a real yucky feeling about Troy Smith at the pro level. Can't really put a finger on it. The more I think about it, I'm thinking that if they don't trade out of 1.01 they should draft that OL that everyone is raving about (whose name escapes me). The Raider OL makes me want to throw #### at the television.

Do you have the Grim Reaper's phone number? We might be needing that.

Lamont Jordan is a decent back.

If Jamarcus and Brohm come out, there are quite a few decent QB's, I think that would make Quinn an after thought for the Raiders.

Ideal spot would be a trade down and possibly go after Joe Thomas to work on that line and grab a QB in second round.

They need to build in the trenches and although Gallery would discourage that theory - this line does not get better - neither will the team.

If Jamarcus and Brohm come out, and they prefer one of them, then they should take him at #1.I would like to see Walter get a shot behind a decent line, but if they think Quinn or whoever is a franchise QB, they should take him.Yes, O line is their biggest weakness, but so is QB. I'd be happy with Thomas or a top QB. The trade down talk is a long shot. The Raiders trade up, not down. I'd love to see them trade down and get a spare 1st, and take Jamarcus and Marshawn, or a few O-linemen, maybe a DT. And I'll be happy to discuss those possibilities all spring, but I think they stay put, and take Quinn.

Thank you Lions!!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I actually want to see Quinn in the Silver & Black. Go Raiders!
Seriously?? He has Rick Meir written all over him. :shrug:
You say Rick Mirer ONLY because they went to the same school. That's so LAME.
If it walks like a duck, looks like a duck and sounds like a duck.. ND is the National Media darling.. The ND Hype will make some teams buy into it just like they did with Meir. Ask the Seahawks how all that hype worked out.

Gallery has shown that he can't play either tackle spot, so grab the LT beast in the 1st and make Gallery the highest paid guard in the league. Perfect fit. :shrug:

I'd say they should move down and grab a RB.. Jordan's a bust, Fargas is well Fargas. Use some of that :shrug: Davis has and find OL fix in free agency.. Grab a couple WR's in the draft and some cast offs from other teams..

Heck, Minnesota is DISPERATE for a WR.. Trade Moss back to them. :wall:

Not a bad idea - protects Gallery byhaving blockers around him.Possible Raiders could trade down and grab Branch from Michigan as a replacement for Sapp.

Second round grab Brohm, Jamarcus or another QB. I cannot think all the rookie QB's of value will be gone by first round.

Shell is fine - though he should be slapped for his off. co ordinator choice this year.

I hope they learned their lesson w/ Gallery. Everyone wanted to trade up to get him and Davis turned down some pretty good offers 'cause Gallery was the "can't miss, franchise LT." I'd love to see Joe Thomas so Gallery could move back to guard where he was effective and can carry on the #76. A.P. would take enough heat off of the passing game that the QB MAY be able to make a 3 step drop w/o being hit (during the 1st half when they haven't fallen behind by 17). In reality, Calvin is a need w/ Moss & Porter being run out of town, but without the running game/O-line, who cares. I say look at the greatest need of the top 10 teams, and spew about how bad you need/want the player that the top 10 teams will be going for and hope to force a draft-day trade to move down a few picks, get A.Branch and an extra top 10 2nd rounder, maybe more.

ETA- Beat me to it all, RAIDERNATION & Iceman

Lamont is fine - their line is the issue = look how well he did under Norv Turner last year.Lastly, there WR corps is not horrible with Curry and Morant - that can be addressed in due time - but not now - rebuilding takes time.

If they make a trade down, the #1 pick should net more than a 2nd rounder, for sure.As to learning their lesson, i can't agree with that. 1st round O-linemen are still the surest bet there is.I really don't want to take a RB, just cause I think you can always get one. Calvin johnson fills a need with Porter and Moss gone, but I hate the track record of 1st round WR's. Probably only second to DL as far as busts go.

Lamont is not fine. Fargas has been more explosive and more effective. I'd lobby for him to be the starter next year if I thought he was durable enough.

Well if the Lions do want the 1.01 pick ala Brady Quinn, and the Raiders play their cards right, they may net themselves the 1.02 as well as 3.02 and 4.02 as per the trade values of such picks.

1.02---> Calvin Johnson, WR

2.01---> Tim Crowder, DE

3.01---> Kevin Kolb(?)/Drew Stanton

3.02---> Marcus Thomas, DT

4.01---> Kyle Young, C/G

4.02---> BAP

That'd be one hell of a draft.

1. I do not get to watch a lot of Oakland games - so could you explain as someone who does what has been so "explosive" and "effective" about Fargas' stellar 3.6 ypc? He's also had just 1 run over 20 yards, and just 10 catches. 2. Either way, if you like Fargas or Jordan, would you not still agree that AP is not really a likely pick? Fine, have Fargas and Jordan compete or split carries. I think most of Fargas' AND Jordan's problems is the ####ty OL.

As a long time Raiders fan, I find it impossible to think about their needs on the football field in the offseason.

The first thing that has to happen, once and for all, is for Davis to relinquish control of the day to day football operations. I love Al, but seeing him on the air several times this season, it is way beyond time he hung em up and let others run the show. Others who know modern day football, X's & O's and how to deal with today's players.

So, the first thing on my wish list is to have Al step out and bring in a solid football mind to take over the GM duties. Then, fire the entire offensive coaching staff and start from scratch, starting with a head coach. IMO, this is the only way for Oakland to get back any semblance of respect in the NFL. Their offense this year was not only sad, but more akin to high school. By bringing in a new GM, cleaning house and hiring a respectable head coach, players may actually see Oakland is committed to winning and may be lured over.

The Raiders defense looks very good heading into 2007. They are yound and fast and will only get better next year. If Jordan gets healthy, he can be a good starting rb in 2007. You get help on the o-line and bring in a solid QB that the new coach likes and go from there.

But first, Al has to go and the whole offensive staff needs to be re-done.

There's a strong sentiment in Raider Nation to take AP. of course, this was when we thought we had the #2 pick, and Quinn was gone. Not too many people wanted to take another O-lineman, even though it's the #1 need.I haven't heard too much from the Raiders to suggest that Lamont was out of favor, and he has a contract, so I can't see him going anywhere. But he has surely been frustrating to watch, his indecision behind the line last year and this year is annoying.

Brady Quinn (pre-combine) is looking like teh #1 overall pick for some quite obvious reasons. He has the measurables. Has a great arm that can make all the throws. Makes good decisions. Ran a pro style offense. Had a Pro caliber head coach.

The Adrian Peterson talk is just crazy. RB's dont go first overall. Who was the last one? OJ? perhaps Campbell?

If no trade down, which isn't likely, the pick will be Brady Quinn.
I think it actually IS likely there is NOT going to be a trade-down.Teams are clearly reluctant to pay what it supposedly costs to move up just a few spots to #1 (a top 10 pick plus another 1st/early 2nd).

Just look at last year. You'd think if ever there was a year to trade down (with Bush being the consensous #1) that it would've happened.

The Raiders are full of young guys at LB and DB, so I think it's safe to say they'll be looking on O, or a possible stud DL.

By the time draft day comes around, I think most of us can agree there will be a consensous #1 QB (Quinn), RB (Peterson), WR (Johnson), OL (Thomas), DT (Branch), DE (Adams)....

What I would guess are the chances:

30% Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin

15% Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech

15% Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson

15% Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame

10% Alan Branch, DT, Michigan

10% Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma

5% someone else

You can get a franchise RB in free agency a lot easier than a franchise QB.

Take your chances on Quinn and do as Silver & Black said with the idea of rebuilding from the inside out.

Dear Oakland Homers,

What is the thought on Andrew Walter nowadays? Hasn't been that impressive this season overall, but obviously had a lot of OL problems to deal with and coaching obstacles to overcome. Is there any chance that they think Walter sould still be the future?

Sincerely,

Non-Oakland Homer

I think few believe in him, but I'd like to see him get a shot behind a decent line, with some good coaching.The problems with his surrounding cast are huge, and everyone realizes that, but it hasn't stopped fans from basically writing him off. Which is frustrating to me.

massraider, which OLineman do you think is worth the #1 overall? Or do you see a trade down and then draft the best OL? Is that the Raiders' wisest course? They need to fill seats, too.It appears the Jets did a great job building their OL with the draft - completely revamped OL that is now playing pretty well. If the team commits to moving Gallery to guard, who do you all think the Raiders should take, and should they be looking to trade down to do so?On Quinn, I think the Raiders' HC will determine whether Quinn will be a good pick. He is extraordinarily well coached (unlike Rick Mirer), so the right HC/OC/QBC in Oakland could make Quinn an excellent system QB. A QB wityh a head on his shoulders seems to be the Raiders' need more than a physically gifted, but immature, athlete. Thoughts?

The Raiders are a bad team. They should keep the top pick and draft the best player available regardless of position. If there is a future HOF or stud player for the next 10 years, there should be a room for him on the Raiders roster.

First, let me say: I don't watch much college football, so my player evaluation is based on prevelant sentiment. I have no strong opinions on which of these players will bust, or break out, or whatever. I love the draft, but don't pretend to know crap about these players.I'm generally speaking in the abstract.

When we were thinking we were going to get the #2 pick, with Quinn going to the Lions, I was a little alarmed that no one was talking about the top OT (Joe Thomas right now, I think) as a possibility. Not taking a player at our greatest need because Gallery has disappointed is a pretty dumb strategy, IMO. Harrington didn't work out in Detroit, should the Lions pass on a QB because of him? Of course not.

Now that we have the #1 pick, Quinn is in play. And if he's rated a franchise QB, then that's who I want to take.

I don't think a trade down is really a possibility. All Raider jokes aside, Davis has a good trading record, and I'm sure he'd be asking for a king's ransom. I don't see it happening.

The RB talk has been generated by fans who are sick of seeing Lamont hesitate behind the line, and getting dropped for a loss. I wonder if a RB is even on the Raiders radar.

It's also so early, everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt. We know someone is going to fall down the draft board, and someone is going to rise. Quinn could have a bad Senior Bowl week, Jamarcus could declare and knock everyone's socks off in workouts, health questions could push Peterson down, etc.

Everyone tends to talk in absolutes this time of year about prospects, and every year, it's proven that things change. The combine, personal workouts, Senior Bowl, there's still a lot of shaking and baking to go on.

The Raiders are a bad team. They should keep the top pick and draft the best player available regardless of position. If there is a future HOF or stud player for the next 10 years, there should be a room for him on the Raiders roster.
:unsure: People think it's Quinn because that's all they hear when it comes to college football. While I do think he's going to go within the first few picks, if not #1... he has not separated himself from the likes of Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas and Adrian Peterson in my mind.

:excited:Quinn or Joe Thomas would be fine picks. As a Lions fan, I'm hoping the Raiders take the franchise QB and we get the OL help needed. As for the Mirer comparison, :unsure: :bye:

Here's what I think about those guys' prospects compared to how I had players at their positions from the previous 3 drafts rated:OL

D'Brickashaw Ferguson

Robert Gallery

Joe Thomas

Jamaal Brown

WRs

Calvin Johnson

Larry Fitzgerald

Braylon Edwards

Roy Williams

Reggie Williams

DEs

Mario Williams

Gaines Adams

DeMarcus Ware

QBs

Eli Manning

Vince Young

Matt Leinart

Phillip Rivers

Brady Quinn

Alex Smith

Ben Roethlisberger

Jay Cutler

(Fixed: for some reason when I was doing the QB list, I completely screwed it up)

This is the NFL, not fantasy. No way does A-Pete go 1.01 in a draft that has this many potential franchise players. I can see the Raiders going one of three directions:

1- Brady Quinn - Al has got to be kicking himself for taking Gallery over Rivers and Big Ben, to a lesser degree for taking Huff over Leinart. While o-line is the most glaring need, the team will be hard pressed to pass over another franchise QB who is considered the consensus top pick.

2- Joe Thomas - As I said before, o-line is the most glaring need. Thomas appears to be the goods, but so did Gallery. I don't think that fact will go unnoticed by Al.

3- Calvin Johnson - While WRs are usually not taken over franchise QBs and OTs, Johnson has the kind of freakish skill set that Al Davis goes nuts for. With Moss and Porter on the outs, it would not surprise me at all to see the Raiders look his way.

Sidenote:

As a Raider fan, I am resigned to the fact that this team will not go anywhere until Al Davis is no longer making the calls. His refusal to give up control and/or pay the salary required to bring in a top caliber coach make it a depressing forecast for the silver and black, regardless of who they select with the top pick in the draft.

This is my current gut feeling about the pick, and I highlighted why. Calvin very well could end up with the best package of physical tools that we've *EVER* seen, and that will get Davis's attention. He's also a top notch character guy. I also think he has the lowest bust risk in the draft.

Is that a plus or a minus in Davis's book? :goodposting:
