David Ball, WR, New Hampshire (1 Viewer)

Weapon of Mass Instruction

Watch my feet!
Viewed by many as a super sleeper kind of guy. Finished with 58 touchdowns and only 70 yards short of Jerry Rice's college numbers. 4.5/40 6'2" 205, super duper athletic is the word.

Now, I'll have to admit that I didn't catch many N.H. games on the deuce. Anyone from that area have any first hand knowledge? Saw him mentioned on another site and started doing some research but it's all pretty much secondhand.

ESPN Player page

The huge game for two D1AA pro prospects was New Hampshire vs Hampton. NFL quality WR David Ball against NFL quality corner Travarous Bain. Ball scored two TDs and ended with 70 yards on 5 receptions. BUT, Bain made it look very easy to cover him for most of the second half, and I thought New Hampshire junior QB Ricky Santos looked outstanding. New Hampshire won 41 38 in a fun shootout, and Santos ended up looking to another WR (forget his name) and he put up bigger numbers than Ball. I called it a stalemate between Ball and Bain (despite Ball's two scores because Bain shut him down seriously after a point, and Ball scored on a trick play). I don't know if that means both are NFL quality or both aren't.

There's been several feature stories, human interest stories, etc., about David Ball over the last couple of years. Sounds like a great kid, and I expect he'll be drafted if he measures decently. The field speed looked suspect, the hops are excellent, he's very tough and his hands are gold. I have no opinion on his route running having seen him just once, but he gets good reviews. Here I go comparing the white guy to another white guy, but think Mike Hass and you're not far from David Ball, imo. Ball is a little more explosive. Hass a bit more polished coming out.

I would agree that Ball brings Hass to mind - not quite as physical, and better athlete, but I like the compare. Ball broke Jerry Rice's I-AA records, certainly nice company to be in. He's a cerebral and courageous WR with great hands who is definitely dangerous in the air. The speed is an issue, and he just seems scrawny and very average athletically.FYI, both Ball and Bain will be at the Shrine Game next week, so Cecil and I will be delivering the dirt straight from the source - three days of practices - hopefully these two will line up against each other in drills.

:hot: Watch the other two Hampton defenders very closely for me, please. They interest me more than the two being discussed here. [/hijack]

Many think Durant (LB) will be the first small school player off the board - We'll definitely be watching Alonzo Coleman closely on the other side of the ball at RB

When are the college all-star games being played and does anyone have a list of when they are on TV so I can watch.

Thank You.

any ideas if RB Arkee Whitlock and RB Steve Baylark will be there?
Baylark will be at the Shriner. I bet he makes a great impression on the staffers. I'm playing catch up on him, so anything you want to share would be appreciated. I saw the Appalachian State loss, and Baylark was a stud in that one. Way under the radar in a class of mediocre RBs. Whitlock accepted an invite to the Hula Bowl in mid December, iirc. He needs to shine there and at the Combine, but I have a hunch he's already earned a second day draft pick. He's better than many of the D1 backs being discussed.

I know it is a year away but what are the prospects for Ricky Santos? Does he have a shot to be drafted? I know he is not that big. He went to my High School. Set the Massachusetts High School Passing TD's record a few years back with a 7 TD game on Thanksgiving.

From what I've heard, he's a longshot. From what I've seen, he's money. I liked Tarvaris Jackson and Ingle Martin from small colleges last year. I don't like Ruscati and Gutierrez this year, and I think they were the only two worth checking out. I'm pretty sure I like Santos better than any of Jackson and Martin though. He won the Walter Payton award as a junior. I think that puts him in good company with Steve McNair (and Romo won it as a senior QB, I think). 6-2 215 and a very sharp decision maker and field general with legit NFL tools.

Yeah, he's actually still got 1 more year of eligibility.Decent athelete, a little bit over-confident.He had about 20 TDs against my H.S. football team in his career, plus he hit a game-winning 3-pointer against my brother's bball team. All in all, I think he will be just as highly rated a prospect as any top D1AA QBs this year. He is the higher rated prospect out of he and Ball IMO.He also worked at Market Basket :bag:

Don't know much about Baylark/Whitlock individually... just been following their exploits through sites during the season and both RBs put up big time numbers this year (along with having solid NFL size each).

I do know that the division Southern Illinois plays in (Gateway) tends to one of the toughest divisions in I-AA football, along with the SWAC and Big Sky.

Baylark did well when playing against tough competition during the season though...

Navy - 84 rushing, 11 receiving

Villanova - 104 rushing, 26 receiving

Towson - 102 rushing, 33 receiving

New Hampshire - 89 rushing, 8 receiving

Maine - 50 rushing, 2 receiving

Hofstra - 125 rushing, 3 receiving

All of those opponents were at least 4-4 in conference play. Off the top of my head NH, Towson, and Maine were all ranked in the Top 25 according to The Sports Network (my site of choice in regards to I-AA football) at one point in time during the season.

When Santos was a Junior in High School, it was rumored that he was being recruited by West Virginia or Penn State. Word was that the big schools were not impressed with his speed (slow 40 time) so he had to go 1AA. The kid is a super athlete. Played on a State Champion Basketball team his senior year of high school. Not even that good a player just tremendous competitiveness and smarts.I hope he gets a shot.

What High School are you from? I played at Bellingham High quite a few years before Santos.
