Arizona Cardinals off-season (1 Viewer)

It’s hard core IDP time in the Forum. Since championships are won in the off-season and NFL free agency and the draft are just around the corner, I thought it’d be worthwhile to start taking a look at what we should be watching for from now until March. I’ll try to highlight at least one team for discussion each day.

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals tabbed Steeler OC Ken Whisenhunt as head coach. Whisenhunt hasn’t committed to his defensive staff yet, but there’s been strong speculation that he’ll retain current DC Clancy Pendergast. Arizona has been steadily improving on the defensive side of the ball, especially up the middle, but there’s still work to be done.

The line looks solid, if unspectacular, with veterans Bert Berry and Chike Okeafor holding down the ends and a solid rotation at DT. While there aren’t likely to be any big splashes in free agency on the front four, the Cards could definitely use some depth at DE through the draft. Berry has missed fourteen games over the past two seasons and it’s a stretch to think Okeafor can repeat his 8.5 sack performance of 2006.

Things look to be more settled at LB than at any point in recent memory. Gerald Hayes was healthy all year and established himself as an every down player. The toe injury that dominated our off-season discussions about Karlos Dansby didn’t look to rob him of any speed. It’ll be interesting to see how this off-season goes. Dansby will be an UFA after 2007; an early extension would be reassuring that the toe injury isn’t the degenerative problem some suggested last off-season. A true, two-down SLB would improve this corps greatly and could give a boost to the value of both Dansby and Hayes.

The biggest off-season splash for this unit should come at corner. Antrel Rolle didn’t make huge strides in his second season but still has the all-around talent to become a more consistent IDP option. The other corner spot has been a mess with Eric Green and David Macklin swapping time as the starter. Green has been impressive in the boxscores at times but nothing special on the field. Adrian Wilson is Adrian Wilson. And while there’s probably not enough IDP production to go around, Aaron Francisco showed some talent as a nickel safety and was rewarded with a contract extension earlier in January. He’ll play in Robert Griffith’s spot next year.

Of course, all bets are off if Whisenhunt surprises and brings in a defensive coordinator who wants to install a major scheme change.

Worth watching

1. Will Whisenhunt keep Pendergast on as DC?

2. Will they pursue a pass rushing DE (and potential IDP sleeper) in the draft?

3. How aggressively will they address the relative weaknesses at CB and SLB?

4. Will they give Karlos Dansby a big vote of confidence with a juicy (and early) contract extension?

Thoughts?

I am pretty sure AZ is looking to pick up some LBs ... Also, I am not sure that the team really likes Dansby all that much to pay him like he is going to want to be paid ...

I've been thinking that for years now. They've had Darling, Huff, and other assorted junk rostered and in significant roles for way too long. I'll be interested to see, especially if Pendergast stays, how aggressively they address the lack of depth everywhere on defense. You may be right on Dansby. But he may also explode out of the doghouse he frequently found himself in with Dennis Green.

That was my thought as well - I'm eager to see what is done with Dansby position-wise with the new staff.

Do Darryl Blackstock or Calvin Pace look to be long term answers at SLB?

Both of these guys were day one picks. I know Pace got a chance when Dansby was out, will Blackstock get a shot this year?

Pace didn't impress on the strong side before shuffling back and forth to the line to add depth back to the defensive line. He may end up back in a linebacker role, but he's not going to be a meaningful NFL player or IDP option. My read on Blackstock is similar to that of Alfred Fincher in New Orleans. If you can't take playing time away from guys like James Darling and Orlando Huff, there's likely little hope for you in this league. He probably would stand a better chance of working into a rotation if Whisenhunt goes with someone other than Pendergast.Love the avatar. Handy Manny has quickly worked his way into our morning rotation. And anything that bumps the Doodlebops or the Wonder Pets is top shelf in my book.

I agree on Blackstock...really disappointed tht he couldn't get on the field more this year. Any AZ homers?Anything that gets that Wonder Pets song out of my head rules.

Pace is in the last year of his contract - 800K for a back up DE/SLB - not sure if that is worth cutting - unless he sucks in TC.

Blackstock, Dansby, Hayes are under contract that pays them less than a mill each. At NFLPA.org it looks like Hayes got paid over 8M this year - weird. Not sure of the bonus situations - NFLPA does not list them.

Beisel, Darling and Huff are all UFAs.

If they keep Prendergast why would the philosophy change?

Unless ofcourse Whisenhunt can force Prendergast to use more than low cost spareparts at LB.

Where do you guys see Arizone going in the draft? Let's say they don't trade down out of the #5 spot and Joe Thomas is alreay gone.

At this point I really think they would have to consider guys like Jamaal Anderson, Gaines Adams and LaRon Landry if they are available.

I don't think that DE is the biggest need, although I could be wrong. Would they consider drafting Landry to pair with Wilson? It would really take some of the pressure of thier CBs since Landry is a big-time cover FS.
