****OFFICIAL**** Dallas Cowboys Offseason Thread (1 Viewer)

So for many fans this season was a failure. In my eyes the Cowboys made alot of progress but still lack a consistent FS and a steady O-line. This has been a recurring theme for the past two years it seems like.

First off I would like to see Parcells, TO and Glenn all stay. His teammmates and Jerry Jones both say they want TO to comeback and I have a feeling ESPN is merely speculating with their TO or Parcells story. I think there is a very good chance TO, Glenn, and Parcells all returning to Dallas. Word is Parcells has been holed up in the Ranch ever since the Seattle loss hopefully going over draft prospects and possible free agents.

Before the start of Free agency Dallas should re-sign Gurode, Columbo, Gramatica, and Coleman. All those guys made crucial contributions.

Secondly in Free Agency I would like to see four key FA starting with a RG

1. Kris Dielman, Eric Steinbach, Pork Chop Womack, or Derrick Dockery in that order

Signing one of these guys ensures a mediocre to good offensive line

2. Deon Grant, Ken Hamlin, Anthony Henry

I love the flashes that Watkins showed towards the end of the season but this position has to be addressed in my opinion after being burned by this position for the past two years. I put Anthony Henry last because I am not thrilled by the prospect of him moving to FS and leaving us with Aaron Glenn or Nate Jones at the second CB.

3. Patrick Ramsey, Tim Rattay, Bryon Leftwich

I think Romo did great but there are still question marks. If you dispute this look no further then Dallas's gameplan vs Seattle that called for a heavy reliance on the running game. Ramsey would be the better option because he would come cheaper than Leftwich and ever since he came into the NFL he has been getting the shaft so his true potential has yet to be seen. Rattay was impressive in limited action and Leftwich could benefit from a new team.

4. Cory Redding, Turdell Sands

Cory Redding could really help the anemic Dallas pass rush. He is a disruptive force on the D-line put him in place of Marcus Spears and all of a sudden the team looks a lot better. Turdell Sands would provide much needed depth at the NT position. Realistically Turdell Sands would be a luxury and I expect Dallas to find a NT in the draft.

I would love to see Adalius Thomas, Assante Samuel, Nate Clements, Dwight Freeney or Nick Harper but I think Jerry will be a little hesistant after spending so much on free agents last year and getting little back. Plus the Redskins will probably sign half those guys anyways.

As for the draft I wouldnt mind seeing either a Lamarr Woodley or Tedd Ginn Jr. in the first round and then just draft on a BPA basis.

Fire the Glorified Gym Teacher TODAY! It is a fact that he's a miserable man, his assistance are leaving (we lost Sean last year) and most don't like working with him, and he treats everyone like trash. I've always thought he worthless behind was overrated, I've said it many times and he's done no more than some of the other coaches who were fired.

He just keeps stringing the assistance and the owner along during the off season. Jerry is being too nice to him.

The best thing for this organizaton it to fire the Glorified Gym Teacher TODAY!

Tex

Henry to FS is a done deal. It's not even a question anymore. It's a matter of what CB they get in FA or Draft.

Three OL to resign and two WR to resign. With the cap jumping way up it will be cheaper to resign both WR than to go into FA. By a mile.

Look for most teams to actually exercise their inflated roter bonus/club options leaving a very sparse FA market.

Look for one lukewarm OL signing and an ILB.

Draft needs

1. CB

2. Pass rush

3. ILB

4. OL

5. WR

6. QB

I don't care whether Bill comes back or not. I'd prefer someone new, but the guys out there don't exactly get my pants going crazy.

I noticed that the OP has talked about Corey Redding in two different posts now.

I really think he has underachieved in Detroit.

Is Spears that big of a disappointment? what has his overall game been like, is he out of shape?

Spears is fine. Parcells is holding him back. Don't let the local/national media tell you otherwise. New DCo and new HC and he's a beast.

Cowboy homers will probably have more to say on the DE situation, but I think the general consensus has been that Spears has been poor in both phases of the game. He gets blocked way too easily, and doesn't generate any push to collapse the pocket from the outside. In short, he's severely underachieving. Some of the same complaints have been voiced about Chris Canty, although I've also heard the coaching staff knocked for not pushing his development along over the past 12 months. That could be the case with Spears, too, although most have been harder on Spears for whatever reason.Cory Redding is not a good fit as a 3-4 end. He struggled to provide pass rush from outside but flourished as an inside pass rusher from the 3-technique role. While he was better against the run, he probably doesn't have the base strength to hold up as an every down 3-4 DE. There's no Luis Castillo potential here.I've been pretty impressed with Jason Hatcher as a situational pass rusher. And his scouting reports suggest he could hold up well against the run. He's probably a better option than Redding right now. I don't disagree with the NT comments. Jason Ferguson is a Parcells guy and serviceable, but the Cowboys could do better than their current rotation.

The loss of Greg Ellis had an impact that none saw coming. Before the Ellis injury, he was constantly doubled teamed leaving the other guys one on one. After the injury that all changed.I'm also on board with culdeus, he was held back. This defense rarely if ever did any stunts.......it was Plain Jane, making it easy for opposing OC to scheme against.

This is Parcells 3-4 MO, though. While there aren't going to be many stunts in any 3-4, Parcells will rarely scheme to blitz his linebackers -- other than the rush ROLB of course. He expects the line to hold the LOS and blockers and allow his linebackers to make plays. I've not been impressed with any of the LB play other than Ware, who seems to be improving in all phases. Bradie James has shown flashes but nothing consistent and Ayodele didn't come close to providing the Marvin Jones/Pepper Johnson/Harry Carson impact Parcells usually gets from his LILB/JLB.Agree with you on the Ellis comment. Huge loss to the pass rush and he had been much better against the run than I expected. Bobby Carpenter showed some potential in the playoff game, but he's apparently still going to see most of his snaps inside this offseason.

this is what I thought, Spears probably gets over shadowed by Ware, I'd like to here the OP's reasoning for upgrading with Redding, especially when Redding doesn't fit the 3-4. Maybe just a Texas homer?

:wall: I don't know if you saw the last game of the regular season, but BP went to a 4-3 for the most part of the game, maybe he realized that something just not working.

I didn't really notice what scheme he ran in the playoff game vs Sea.

I didn't see the Detroit game, but I did see them running some 4-3 with Canty inside against Seattle. It looked like they were trying to overload one side to make it impossible to block Ware. There was more blitzing of the inside backers in the playoff game too, presumably to counter the multiple mismatches the Seahawk spread offense had against the weak secondary. It may have been that Zimmer finally got through to Parcells with Ellis out and forced some of his more aggressive tendencies into the gameplans.

I really think you will see a change with the defensive playcalling now that Zimmer is gone. Zimmer had no experience with the 3-4 so with that in mind Parcells obviously held back. I am not insinuating that Parcells is the type to constantly run stunts but later in the year specifically the Lions game and Seahawks Dallas was stunting their DL.

Marcus Spears was a disappointment. I dont think the coach is to blame in this instance. I think he is lazy. Whenever it was third down Spears and Canty would act like they ran into a wall. They would stand striaght up and get no push what so ever. The only lineman to generate a pass rush was Ratliff, Hatcher and K. Coleman.

I really have no basis for wanting Redding other then watching a small sample size of Detroit games this year. He seemed to be a disruptive force the total opposite of Spears. So I thought he might come at a decent price and be a good pick up. If im wrong then I apologize.

Special teams coach Dehavan is now gone to Seattle per blogger. I believe Bill Parcells wil not be back that is 3 coaches gone in the last few weeks could be more to come.

While its all speculation at this point I would be very surprised if Parcells isnt back come next year. I have a hard time believing Jerry would just be sitting and waiting if didnt already know what was going to happen conversely I think Parcells has enough respect not to waste Jerry Jones time.

Locally, it's being reported that JJ told BP to take his time in making his decision. According to his contract BP has til February 1 to make his decision. Now the specualtion is that it'll be done by this Monady. :lmao:

Predictions as of todayCoaching Change coming- I think this is a good thing.HC- N. TurnerDC- R. RiveraOC- J. Garrett-Henry moves from CB to FS.-T.O stays-Return to the 4-3 defense.-Dallas goes after O-line during FA.-We draft OG - Blalock in the first round.
Offense:No offense Bankerguy, but I don't think the O-line is as big of a problem, or priority as you make it out to be. Bledsoe took a beating the last couple of years, but that has more to do with his tendency to hold onto the ball than it does with the pass-blocking. The line did more than hold it's own when Romo was back there and was running roll-outs and quick three step drops. Cowboys were fourth in the NFL in total offense last year and he was only sacked 21 times in ten games, compared to Bledsoe's 17 in six. Flozell is solid, Gurode really improved last season and Columbo was a nice surpirse. Kyle Kosier or even Marco Riveria could be upgraded, but that's not this team's #1 concern. If we are going to upgrade on offense (draft or FA), I think the only positions we seriously look at would be OG and WRQB - Romo: Need a veteran backup.RB - Barber/Jones: I put Barber there first because I believe he takes over this year. He is a much more effective runner than Jones; period.WR - Owens/Glenn/Crayton: A top notch trio; long in the tooth and some developmental prospects for the future are needed.TE - Witten/Fasano: No need to comment.T - Adams/Columbo: No the greatest, but I doubt you find an upgrade over either in the off-season.G - Kosier/Rivera: An upgrade could only improve the line, but neither player is a major liability. Guards are one of the easiest positions to fill; no need to spend a first rounder on one.C - Gurode: Finally played to expectations last year.Defense:I feel like the biggest problem with this team starts and ends with the LBs aside from Ware. The Cows personnel dictates a 3-4. However, in a 3-4 you must get pressure from all of your LBs and the only player the Cows had that could do that after Ellis went down was Ware. Qbs that played Dallas in the second half of the season had all day to throw; our secondary got exposed bad. If they stay in a 3-4DE - Spears/Canty/Coleman: All three are solid 3-4 space-eating ends. If they go 4-3, I believe Spears would be converted to an off-tackle with Ferguson at nose. None of these players are big-time pass-rushers.DT - Ferguson: He is what he is, a good nose tackle. A space eater who should never play off-tackle.OLB - Ware/Ellis/Carpenter: Ware is a classic 3-4 rush OLB; Ellis made a great adjustment. We haven't seen enough of Carpenter to know what he can do. If they go 4-3, Ellis and Ware become full-time rush-ends playing across from Canty/Coleman.ILB - Adoyle/James: Jon Kitna said that James as such a bad linebacker, they targeted him because he didn't even know his reads. Adoyle is a decent run stopper and that's it. Neither player has pass-rush potential or coverage skills. This is a rough position.CB - Henry/Newman/Glenn - Newman is good and while Henry is average, he's not a major liability (think Colts CBs). If they move Henry to FS, they will need to find another corner; Glenn is not a starter. Any DB will get killed when they have to chase a WR for 5+ seconds.FS - Watkins/Davis: A major weakness; I believe it becomes a moot point of Henry gets moved.SS - Williams: Roy is a playmaker, but not a good cover SS; think John Lynch, not Rod Woodson. A better pass-rush and an upgrade at FS will go a long way towards covering his blemishes and allowing him to free-lance more.Overall Needs:1. Playmaking LB; think Urlacher/Brooks/Lewis.2. Cover DB (FS/CB)3. Pass-Rusher (OLB/DE); depends on scheme.4. Offensive Guard5. WR

You make a good point about the sacks. I think you are forgetting the run game. This group is not a good blocking or screen pass team. Down the stretch it was painfully obvious to me that Kosier, Rivera, and sometimes Gurode (He was much improved this year) were getting driven back 1-2 yards.OG is a need. So is OT, FLo is not getting younger and Columbo while solid is an injury risk.I agree with LB and CB being priorities as well.

The Cowboys haven't effectively run the screen pass since before Emmitt; maybe a new coach will change that.

I don't disagree at all that we need to start looking towards the future (and even present) at the OL. Flozell will be 32 when hext season starts and Rivera wil be 35. On top of that, both players have battled major injuries the last two years. I also agree with you on Columbo; he played 16 games last season... for the first time ever. If we could bring in an Eric Steinbach or Max Starks, I would be ecstatic. If Levi Brown fell to us in the draft, I would take him with our first pick... as long as they did something about the pass rush in free-agency.

I really hope they give Marion Barber the larger cut of the RB pie next season. He just looks like such a tougher runner and a better blocker too. One of my favorite MB3 stats is his 46 first downs on 135 attempts compared to Jones' 43 on 267 attempts. Sure, you could see if that if Marber was just a short-yardage back, but he averaged 4.8 YPC, compared to Jones at 4.1.

DC- TBD Haley?

OC- J. Garrett

-Henry moves from CB to FS. yes

-T.O stays I doubt it lots of WR in FA now. 50/50 at best he's not a big hit to cut loose now and his finger is worse than most think

-Return to the 4-3 defense. No way 2008 maybe. You forget Tuna still has his fingers on this and so does Jerry.

-Dallas goes after O-line during FA. Isn't that like saying when my car is low on gas I'll fill it up?

-We draft OG - Blalock in the first round. No way. Best D player available first round

Coach announcement should be anytime now.

Local media is convinced that you'll see:

HC: Turner

OC: Garett

DC: Rivera/Singletary

Also, on another note. Why isn't Bledsoe a candidate to take over in Chicago for Rex? I sat there the whole game thinking that even Drew could have won that for Chicago.

Turner is all but a done deal. Prepare for some campo-esque years while Stoops gets ready.

I just vomited down my shirt.

As a cowboy fan i wanted anyone but Norv. My only hope is that after 2007's 8-8 record they cut ties with him and be done with it. I dont need 3 years of 8-8, 7-9 which is what Norv will provide with his leadership. :goodposting:

Phillips is a good but not great coordinator and a mediocre to bad head coach.

Turner is a good but not great coordinator and a mediocre to bad head coach.

Campo is a good but not great coordinator and a mediocre to bad head coach.

Gailey is a good but not great coordinator and a mediocre to bad head coach.

See a pattern?

The only hope that Cowboys fans have that isn't based purely upon speculation about the future is that Garrett proves to be a legit head coaching prospect in the making.

I have no way of knowing one way or the other about Garrett, but Turner and Phillips look to me like guys who are going to keep the chair warm in Dallas for 2-3 years until either Garrett's ready, or until there is (hopefully? maybe?) a good longer-term head coaching candidate ready for hiring.

If I was Jones (and maybe he's done this) I'd go see if I could talk Russ Grimm into taking over. He at least is a legit candidate who hasn't already demonstrated that he's a failure as a head coach. Cowboys fans know who he is and respect him, and he brings in direct coaching knowledge in an area of need for the team, offensive line. If he pans out maybe they have a new head coach for 5 or 7 or 10 years. If not, they're no worse off than if they'd hired Turner or Phillips.

As a 'Skins fan I'd throw up in my mouth a tad, but Grimm's definitely a guy who is a worthy candidate.

IRVING – Andre Gurode will be a Cowboy through 2012.

Scheduled to hit the open market on March 2, Gurode signed a six-year deal with the Cowboys on Monday. The deal is believed to be worth between $4.5 million and $5.5 million per season.

The Cowboys had been in talks with Gurode's agent, Kennard McGuire, since the season ended, but they slowed some during the team's head coaching search and were kick-started in the last week or so.

Gurode, who turns 29 on March 6, started every game in 2006 and was added as an alternate to the Pro Bowl. A second-round pick in 2002, Gurode split time at center and guard as a rookie before moving to right guard the next two years. He returned to center in 2005 and started two games, serving mainly as Al Johnson's backup.

Andre Gurode (65) was a second-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft.

pretty expensive, as FA goes on we'll see if it's just the new era of FA or cowboys overpaid. regardless, just hope gurode continues to improve.

if al johnson gets resigned by another team do they get an extra 2nd? at least makeup for the total whiff by Parcells in the draft on oline guys

While after all the dust has settled I must say I am very pleased with what Dallas accomplished via free agency. Resigning Colombo and Gurode were very good moves. Also being able to add Leonard Davis at starting RG will make this line a better than average unit. By signing Colombo, Davis, and Gurode and Kosier (last year) the Cowboys will finally have some continuity for the next 3-4 years. Signing Colombo was really key because now Dallas is able to draft on a strictly BPA status. I have been warming up to the idea of taking a CB in the first just because of the talent that will be available. All and all I think the only remaining needs for the Cowboys are

Back up NT

Veteran Safety (in case Watkins doesnt get it)

Back up Guard

Possibly WR due to the age of TO and Glenn

Columbo was the key resigning. He both returns another member of the line from last year and he assures the Cowboys that Davis will be a guard and not a tackle. While I still think the Cowboys grossly overpaid for Davis (and they weren't alone in signing a guard for that amount of money), they have definitely shored up the worst part of their offense and maybe the worst unit on their team. Now we'll have to see how bad Jerruh botches the draft without Parcells there to provide sanity.

I'm liking what they did so far in offseason as well. This Oline should be better than average...but average at worst. I would be thrilled to see one of the top 3 Safeties go to Dallas in the draft, would also be excited if they draft a WR.

My "ideal" draft for the Cowboys would be if, I know a BIG IF, Landry or Nelson is there when the Cowboys pick then take them in the 1st. In the 2nd, with this deep WR draft, they grab one of the WR's left. There's about 9 "1st round talent" WR's this year, and I'm just not seeing all of them going in the 1st round. Maybe one slips late to Dallas. Another BIG IF...but like I said my ideal draft for them in the 1st two rounds.

Cant wait till the draft!

Rd 1 - 026 - Anthony Spencer LB, Purdue

Rd 3 - 067 - James Marten OT, BC

Rd 4 - 103 - Isaiah Stanback QB/WR Washington

Rd 4 - 122 - Doug Free OT, Northern Illinois

Rd 6 - 178 - Nick Folk K, Arizona

Rd 6 - 195 - Deon Anderson FB, Connecticut

Rd 7 - 212 - Courtney Brown CB, Cal-Poly

Rd 7 - 237 - Ball, Alan CB Illinois

Along with Cleveland's first round pick next year.

We got a LB/DE for the defensive minded head coach, a pair of offensive linemen, a kicker(Grammy getting old), a fullback, and two CB's.

Nothing spectacular, but not as bad as titans and eagles... ;)

Count me as rooting for whoever is playing Cleveland each week! :lmao:

I love the Spencer pick and getting the Cleveland first.

Not sexy, but a good draft overall. I also wanted to say that I like both of the OT's drafted.

This Defense could be scary good if they get a pass rush.

I think the new head coach will do that for them. Parcells always ran a pretty basic vanilla type 3-4, and Phillips loves complex schemes.

No doubt Phillips will bring the heat, especially on passing downs. :headbang: Early on I will be looking at penalties and turnovers. If we improve in those areas then I think this team can win the NFC East.
