If Drew Stanton (QB Michigan State) doesn't go in the first round. (1 Viewer)

From the looks of it he did really well at the Combine as well as snagging an MVP in the Senior Bowl.

I was impressed by his 3 cone drill (6.77) which was 9th best (of those doing it) and faster than Zabransky who is supposed to be the scrambling QB in the draft.

His Senior Bowl week of practice wasn't great, however. The practices there are generally more important than the game.As far as the Combine, I don't think Stanton's measureables were ever in question.

Who at the tail end of the 1st round is looking QB? Chicago? I'm not sure who you think is drafting him in the 1st round.

The Bears or Ravens are a possibility. He wouldn't be a bad pick for the Lions, however, I think the Raiders should take CJ in the first and Stanton in the 2nd.

Who says he's going in the 2nd?Stanton won't make it out of the 1st round.
If Drew Stanton (QB Michigan State) doesn't go in the first round., he could be a great pick for the Lions in the second round
I didn't say that he wouldn't get drafted in the first... but I do think that he will slip to the second.

I don't know why but this made me laugh. I know what you're saying though.I'd guess that a team trades up into the bottom 5 picks of the 1st to snag him.

some nice prognostication in this thread, figured a bump was in order.

with the lions teaming calvin johnson with roy williams, shouldn't there be more banter about Drew Stanton? he seems like a viable dynasty option with potentially more upside than Brady Quinn, considering that Stanton will play in a dome and has 2 stud WRs in a Martz system.

The key is Stanton will sit a yr instead of starting first day, He will be able to learn system like Palmer.
Yep. Exactly. I liked the pick a lot. I was hoping they'd take him with the 2.02 pick, but they were able to trade down with Buffalo, and STILL get him! :loco:

Unfortunately, Martz will be a head coach somewhere else next year. Stanton will then have to learn a 2nd system in 2 years.

That's a big assumption, isn't it? With Cowher and Schottenheimer getting looks, and probably fewer jobs available, I would say that is FAR from a sure thing. And considering Roy and CJ are there, and a QB Martz supposedly loved, I wouldn't be surprised if he has eyes on the Detroit job.

Martz may be head coach of the Lions.

If Kitna does well like I think he will, I can see Stanton not getting his shot until 09

Yes. It is an assumption. But so is 90% of this board.Teams that may or may not be in the market for a new headcoach in 2008:JacksonvilleBuffaloCinncinattiClevelandCarolinaDetroitNYGNew England (does Belichek walk?)TampaTennessee (depends on Fisher)WashingtonI could see him landing in NYG.

I think if Stanton sits and learns the offense for a year or two, hes going to be in great shape to take over whats probably going to be a very nice offense. I dont know why Stanton isnt considered right there with Russell and Quinn unless people are counting on those two guys stepping right into their fantasy line ups as starters

I could see him landing in NYG.

Am I missing something in Cincy?FWIW, I doubt either Ohio team has a new HC next year. Everyone else could, although some of those (WAS, TEN at least) should have Coordinators promoted.

Martz in not a good head coach. I have never seen a HC mismanage a clock like Martz. That being said, he is a great OC and I think he knows it. They gave him his toys and I think he stays to play with them. Did he even go and interview anywhere for a HC job this offseason? Doubt it.. Look for Stanton in 09 as they have 2 years left with Kitna, assuming that O-Line doesnt get him killed.

Update per KFFL:

Lions | Martz working on Stanton's mechanicsSat, 5 May 2007 11:06:22 -0700Tom Kowalski, of Mlive.com, reports Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz is working on some of rookie QB Drew Stanton's mechanics. "Yeah, he's changing everything. It's a lot and you can see the success rate when you start doing what he's telling you. I've just got to keep doing that and progressing and getting better with it. You can definitely see what happens when you start doing what he wants," Stanton said. Stanton did not go into specifics as to what Martz is looking to change, but said he could "probably stay here for an hour and write a book on it." Martz discussed the change in the way Stanton threw the ball, saying it had to do with pressure points. "He's had a `fat' hand on the ball, so he kind of pushes it. He's got a live wrist so when he gets that hand placement right, the ball snaps out of there pretty good. It's all the little things we've got to get in line. He's had great success doing what he's been doing, but I think we can help him a little more," Martz said.
