Report: Colts to release Stokley on Thursday

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Brandon Stokley will be cut Thursday.

Stokley appeared in just four games in 2006 before tearing his Achilles'. It's unlikely that he'll be 100 percent at any point this offseason. Feb. 28 - 7:20 pm et

49ers hire coordinator; Bryant to be released?

49ers hired QB coach Jim Hostler, 40, to be their offensive coordinator.

This should help smooth the transition for Alex Smith. In other 49ers news Wednesday the Santa Rosa Press Democrat blog expects Antonio Bryant to be released, which won't make Smith's life any easier. Bryant will be suspended for the first two games of the 2007 season for violating the substace abuse policy. Feb. 28 - 4:54 pm et

Also from RW:

The next most surprising news was that the 49ers are expected to release Antonio Bryant. They really can't afford to lose offensive talent, and Bryant, unlike Moulds, is in his prime. It would be a strong statement by Mike Nolan that he doesn't tolerate off-the-field problems. Maybe too strong. The 49ers will likely overpay some free agent, perhaps Donte' Stallworth or Drew Bennett, to fill the void.

I like Alex Smiths prospects moving forward regardless with a healthy Davis and more experience.

Never been too sold on Bryant. He is decent I guess but he never seems to play up to what might be his potential and he has attitude problems. His best season was with Cleveland and it wasn't really that good.

SF has a lot of money to spend and decent draft position to add weapons for Smith to use. Thier Oline really came together finaly last season. Biggest needs are on defense for them I think. But a stronger offense and weak defense is always a nice combination for a fantasy QB. :lmao:

Bennett is from the Bay Area and would probably be interested in the 49ers. Whether or not they want to pay him is another question.

Bennett in SF makes a whole lot of sense especiallyif the niners whack Bryant.Although I would like to see Bennett end up in New England.

They have the cap room to go and get Stallworth. If he lands in SF then bump Alex Smith for 2007!
Bump Alex Smith for the first 2 games while Stallworth is healthy. After Dante blows out his hamstring in week 3, bump Smith back to mediocre backup status.

Niners need a couple WRs.

Bryant's OK. When Battle's been hurt he sure seems lonely. Bennett or Donte would just be in the same situation.

They need to draft(or sign) a WR that can play now.

Not project Maxwell who they hope will develop into one. Not Robinson who might be a WR or a RB then winds up being a RB. Not....stop with the projects and draft one that can play now.

Considering they are talking about cutting a guy who can't get his head out of his butt, do you think they are going to sign another one with the same problem....

Brandon Stokley-WR- Colts Mar. 4 - 10:38 am et

The Saints are reportedly showing interest in free agent Brandon Stokley.

Stokley, released by Indianapolis last week, is a Lafayette native. He'd likely be the team's third receiver, ahead of Terrance Copper, if healthy.

If healthy, I really like Brandon Stokely. He knows his role, and that is getting open on 3rd downs. Great # 3 receiver that I hope the Packers will consider signing.

You got that right. Still, it's not a bad play to put someone like Stokley on the end of your bench to see.
